2 years from now, we will be seeing niche edge aggregators, just watch.
Not sure what you mean. I just attempted to define it. There is no standard definition yet, afaik.
---------------
Brian,
Edge eaters - dropped it for now. I have been using it as a shorthand for edge aggregators, but it seems cheesy somehow.
Edge feeders - still using it (read the full article!)
Thought that might be of interest.
Yep - I profiled it on Weblist already:
http://mashable.com/weblist/postgenomic/
I saw your post (I'm subbed to the feed) - I definitely agree that we'll be seeing more niche memetrackers.
I have been thinking about building a generic edge aggregator for sometime too - something like a decentralized MySpace to use a crude analogy. I think the availability of open APIs and RSS feeds from many popular services would make them very easy to aggregate. I think ning provides the framework to build such an aggregator.
I found the following two articles interesting:

I believe MySyndicaat is a platform for generic edge aggregation. It allows you to aggregate content from blogs and RSS feeds and other sources (html, search engines, etc.), as well. Results are filtered, spliced and/or hand picked (using Digests) and re-feeding is supported.
Edgio highlights an insidious problem in the review of new websites: A-list bloggers using their influence to push their own products onto the market. If Edgio had been introduced by "ordinary people" it would be dismissed. Attention spent on poor products by well-connected people is attention taken from more deserving prodiucts by less well-connected people (and I am not just talking about my own site).
There is now a major credibilty gap for any site that reviews new products. How do we know if the next review is impartial? Who has been paid, what relationships have been leveraged, and what favors have been given?
"I guess what I am trying to express is… where does the edge begin?"
Well, it doesn't really begin, as such - any site that creates RSS feeds could potentially be aggregated in some way.

Mark,
Yep, there's hype around Edgeio, and that hype is all the more apparent because Mike is involved. But that's not to say it isn't an extremely interesting concept and indicative of a wider trend.
Your last paragraph sounds vaguely accusative, and if that's the case I'd like to clarify that I don't live in the Valley, don't have any real-world connection to the "A-list" bloggers (whoever they may be) and will always disclose any relationship - financial or otherwise - with a company or individual. What's more, more than half of my reviews are negative (just take a look at Weblist) and I'm skeptical about the masses of new companies launching with no apparent business model. I always review companies that are innovative and interesting to me, and most of the time I have absolutely no information about the company's background.
By my definition, no - edge aggregators collect RSS feeds and display them publicly. Clipmarks is a social bookmarking service and the main input is via a bookmarklet, not an RSS feed.
I appreciate your clarification of your methodology.
Thanks. And just so you know - CrissCross is on my radar and I've been using it for a few days so I can figure out what I think. That doesn't mean that I'll definitely blog it, but it does mean that I'm giving it fair consideration like everything else. Thanks for the comments.
If that's the case all Google needs to do is throw an RSS link on search results the way it allows people to monitor news stories with Google news and its set... isn't it? What more is needed to make something an edge feeder?
Thanks for the review - thought you'd like to know that Reevoo is currently aggregrating reviews from blogs. However, we also collect product reviews from confirmed purchasers of our retail partners, enabling us to have reviews across in excess of 2000 products.
Your point about people taking edgeio data without our permission may be based on a misunderstanding. We WANT people to take our data - and not have to ask permission. Our name is the word "edge" with io on the end. The "i" stands for "in" and the "o" for "out". Our approach can be seen by adding /?atom=1 to the end of any query on edgeio. We have an API (it is free and unlimited) that allows the re-use of our data.
We believe that classified ads will serve as a business model for many online publications (as they do for offline) and that edgeio can be the supplier of those ads to sites. The API has been implemented by us in the form of a widget you can put on your web site. Is shows edgeio data, filtered by your preferences. You can see it if you are an edgeio member in your "My Edgeio" area. But our widget is just the beginning. Developers can mashup our data in their own formats at will.
Once we have paid listings this wil also allow us to share revenue with sites that use our classified listings.
Hope that helps clarify. In that sense we "feed to the edge" not just "from the edge".
Oh, and I really disagree we are ahead of the curve by a little too much. 15000 listings in 10 days is awesome. It took Craig 10 years to cover 100 cities or so. Our bottoms up, self-publishing, model has created listings from more than 1600 cities in those 10 days. Imagine a year from now, when a much larger number of listings from cities where edgeio is the only classified listings alternative in those places. That is the power of the edge. You don't have to "launch" a new palce. it launches itself. It IS happening :-)
Best

founder/ceo/edgeio
Yep, I'm well aware that Edgeio is both an edge feeder and an edge aggregator. Maybe the word "permission" is the wrong one to use.
I'm a big fan of the edge and the growing awareness of the aggregated model, but ultimately I wonder about its defensibility. Perhaps you'll prove me wrong!
