As someone who doesn't have an iPhone yet, but is hoping to get one, I can say for certain that I would not be able to afford the extra twenty bucks if 3G service were more expensive. So, I think you're right on with your thoughts.

Basically, if I ever get one, I'm looking at purchasing the cheapest plan possible. And I'm sure that EDGE will do just fine for me, if that's what I have to live with. After all, right now I have no mobile Internet access at all. And something will always be better than nothing.

I don't think 3G is a huge battery power hog. GPS is definitely much worse. But my impression is that when Apple first introduced the iPhone, it wanted to deliver a product with the thinnest aesthetic possible. If the company wants to maintain that profile, it would have to allow for a smaller average battery life span when operating on a 3G network. Unless it can squeeze in a larger battery. The one in there now is pretty big already.

I doubt battery technology has advanced to the point that 3G will not cause a battery to drain faster than EDGE circuitry would.

I have a Sony Ericsson K850 andthe battery life is huge. Even when I use the 3G a lot.

Whatever, Vodaphone made a smart deal securing the 3G version for most european countries.

G1 iPhones are already sold out in the UK, so I guess this time the G2 iPhone will actually "sell" in Europe.

But the bad news for Apple and Vodaphone is France, since they are requires to sell the phone without a contract by law (sometimes you just have to love them).

Correct me if i am wrong but we all know nothing of what apple and its exclusive partners are planning .. be it in the USA or otherwise ..

And just because we have a few clues on that so elusive new iPhone .. we all don't no jack about it and any certain voice / data plans ..

I mean nice written article but its based upon already available data plan options .. noone knows if At&t isnt upgrading the current plans to 3G .. and just keeping the price .. or whos saying it will be 20 bucks more .. just cos its an option right now ?

Aye for one wouldn't pay for a new 3G service. What Apple needs is WiMax, none of that 3G is never fast, especially if you are not in a metropolitan area.

Sprint's CDMA on average is faster and there are more antennas.

Absolutely. 3G is the general standard for Europe. That requires Apple to upgrade itself offerings as soon as possible. But given Apple's exclusive deal with AT&T in the US, I don't know how much of an appeal 3G will have for American consumers. Businesses, on the other hand, may start to adopt a 3G iPhone to significant degree. Particularly those who've grown accustomed to Microsoft Exchange Server, which Apple seems to have promised to its corporate customers to effectively compete better with the ubiquitous BlackBerry from RIM.

The 3G service for the upcoming iPhone may not be offered for $60 for voice+data. I would assume, given AT&T 3G's relative age, the service may be offered at $80. Right now, the iPhone is offered with service for base minimum of $40 (voice/200SMS) plus $20 (Web access). I'm one to think that 3G service for the iphone will cost $40 in and of itself.

The 3g iPhone may finally get me to get rid of windows mobile. Im not looking forward to the $60 a month after being on a sprint sero plan, but I need something that will let me easily update my site from my phone, and the iphone can probably do that. I need to find a copy/paste solution though
