Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/11/09/payperpost-not-evil/

  • vaspers aka steven e. streight · 2 years ago
We don't want no stinking incentivized blog posts or compensated comments.

PayPerPost is blog whoring: praising or flaming a target product, company, or site, for payment of some type.

Sponsored blog posts and comment spamming pollute the purity of peer-to-peer recommendations that the blogosphere and online forums are based upon.

I side with my pal Jason Calacanis on this issue. It's an issue that divides the bloggers, with hot feelings on either side.

It's like if your wife was saying lots of romantic, flattering things to you, then you eventually discover that she was complying with some ethnomethodological university experiment in social engineering, and was paid $10 every time she said nice things to you.

This is what blog whoring is like.

We want to hear uncoached, unincentivized, unrehearsed, spontaneous, genuine reports from actual users of products or websites.

PayPerPost is just a way to game the blogosphere in a destructive, credibility-destroying manner, thus lowering the overall value of the venue.

    vaspers is on point.

paying someone to artificially post about a site/product/compania is lame lame lame.

yeah, making money is nice and some people don't have an issue with doing whatever to make it.

but the motivation behind it - selling out - is unWholesome.

"It would be real easy for me to turn on systems like IZEA and Blogitive now that I’m writing for a popular blog here at Mashable, but that would be disingenuous."

And also you'd get fired. ;)

Plus a free ass-kicking for good measure. :P

I'm pretty sure he meant "turn on" as in "turn against" (i.e. being against those services now that he's writing for an established blog). I read it the the same way you did at first though. :P

Yup, he just pinged me and said that's what he meant.

OK, you can keep the job, Mark...for now. :P

I saw that panel as well and watching Cuban talk about blog monetization right now. Nice post...

There's actually no right or wrong to every questions in the world. There's always some fairness to every unfairness comments or actions.

But I like your post on this topic and some guys out there may be short of money for their college education.

Just as an FYI, there were like 12 attendees. No need to regret anything.

Being paid to post is definitely not unethical, and is not even a moral question. It's a question of quality. And if taking money to post about things diminishes the overall quality of your blog, it will ultimately be up to the user to decide. And will ultimately lead to more traffic for the blogs, like Mashable, that do not do this. So who gives a shit! I don't see what the problem is here and why people get so heated about.

I definitely agree with Mark about his point concerning the low-traffic bloggers, and how services like pay-per-post can help them get started and therefore the blogging community at large. It's completely arrogant to disparage such services and call them unethical. It also exhibits a low level of moral reasoning. And if that's what some really people think, they're just not that smart.

All I think is that it will lead people to trust certain blogs more or less than others.

So F*#$ all this "ethical fiber" stuff!!!

I do sponsored reviews on my side and agree with Mark said about giving small blog a chance to make some money.

About the quality of the sponsored post being bad/biased just because it is sponsored, I think it is nonsense.

Would you have think this is a sponsered post?

EVERYONE is paid to do something. That's why you have a job and that's why your kids get to eat. There is not right or wrong, just another way to monetize your blog.

I am a mom to 7 kids. I am not an A-list blogger, for sure. I love blogging, and my husband said if I was going to spend all that time blogging that I should at least get paid for it. So I did! (he isn't getting paid for the hours spent on City of Heros)
This kind of money, which is only about $100 month most of the time, helps me out. Christmas presents, birthday presents, little fun things I wouldn't normally splurge on.
I really do not understand why people think it is so horrible for me to be paid to advertise. I do not want to lose my readers, so I don't just take any old ad that comes along. I make it fun and appropriate to my blog. Having readers is what makes blogging fun, and crappy advertising is what sends readers running.
So, I am not forming an opinion based on money, I am taking money for something I feel that I can be positive about.
So some people don't care what they advertise. They will lose readers and then will lose ranking and then will lose opportunities. Bad ethics will bite people in the rear.
So will bad mouthing people for things that are perfectly legitimate. I, for one, will leave a site that bad mouths my work just because they feel like it.
I have also quit reading blogs for their crappy advertising on PPP.
