    Hey Dan,

A couple of questions for you:
    1) How did you pull these into a Top Ten? (e.g. what were your evaluation criteria)
    2) Do you know how much participation / uptake each of these sites have?

It would be great to see the specifics of what each additional, special interest social network adds when it's missing the powerful social graph of sites like Facebook or LinkedIn, and if it's really worth diluting my social networking by joining them.

    Thanks for sharing your insights!
    -Susan

Most I found need inspiring stories, case studies and mentors. I found these key things
    1. partners... Brin and who?, Jerry Yang and who?, Bill Gates and who?
    2. fulfilling needs of a certain demographics or in a corporate lineup of services.. google didn't invent everything they serve.
    3. passion.. must treat it like a hunt rather than plant and wait.. you follow? when you hunt.. time isn't a factor.. you will follow 'til you die... when you plant ur like a farmer.. you plant and wait leaving the future to mother nature....what if no rain?

Dan - Thanks for the great list. I'd like to suggest ChubbyBrain (http://www.chubbybrain.com) as well. We publicly launched our startup and investor information & insights platform 3 weeks ago. For lack of a better analogy, think of it is as "Yahoo Finance meets Yelp" for private innovative startups.

ChubbyBrain presently contains profiles of over 14,700+ primarily angel- and venture backed startups as well as 1100+ investor (VCs, angels, universities, etc) profiles along with details of the companies they've invested in (e.g. their portfolio). Startups cover a broad array of sectors including everything from web2.0 to mobile to green/clean tech to biotech/medical device to social enterprise.

For entrepreneurs, it offers the following utility:

    1. Researching investors - Our investor profiles let you understand what investors, whether venture capitalists or angel investors, primarily invest in (based on sector, geography, stage of company) as well as where they've put their money in the past - their portfolio companies. Customarily, there are databases which charge hundreds and thousands of dollars for this. We don't think you should waste your money on those so we've made it freely available.

    2. Researching Partners, Customers, Competitors & Market Trends - With profiles on 14,700+ startups, ChubbyBrain allows you to stay on top of who current and emerging competitors to your offering are and also aid in partner/customer identification. Because the platform is constantly adding new startups across our various sectors, it is also a way to gather market intelligence and keep on top of trends.

    3. Raising the Entreprneur's Profile - As mentioned, we allow members to sign up and rate and review the viability of startups they find on the platform. We currently have over 800 such reviews. We will regularly be featuring these reviews and the people providing these expert insights and so this represents a vehicle to showcase yourself and promote your own startup through your insights and market knowledge.

Thanks again for compiling this list, and we look forward to seeing you at CB.

To Dan and readers - After checking out the ChubbyBrain platform, don't hesitate to contact me with ideas, questions or to suggest ways that we can work together in 2009. (my email is below).

    Warm regards,
    Anand, co-founder - ChubbyBrain

For entrepreneurs who are looking to quickly build teams for projects of all sizes, I recommend http://ki-work.com

Building an online team gives you instant visibility for your business or project, and can be used to pitch directly for projects on the Ki Work site. Nice.
  • Cheri Williams · 9 months ago
Networking is like gardening. If you neglect the work that it takes to cultivate them, they will wither and die. Those flowers you spent time planting (creating that profile) will get choked out by those weeds. (your competition) Meaning-if you do not work your networking group, your profile will get lost in the crowd of those that will. Simple strategy of survival of the fittest. So if you join a networking group, remember that just planting that profile with out cultivation and lots of work, it will more than likely just die out. Make sure that you join a group that fits you and your business needs and then work it, and work it strongly. Also don't join everyone of them you can find. You will end up having to spend your day working them and not having time for anything else. Be choosy, find the one that meets your success needs and grow, grow grow. Wishing all of you the best success. Cheri

Interesting. I thought I should see Plaxo. I saw a deal last week on a software coy which can make every website a social network.

Using LinkedIn and reluctant to sign-up with anyother ones for the following reasons.

    1. LinkedIn from what I can see has a critical mass.

    2. I don't want to have to many accounts on top of Facebook + FriendFeed + Disqus etc

    3. I'd bet that some of these will fade away and/or be bought out by LinkedIn.

That was great advice Paul. You are definitely right about the low cost startups. Some of the biggest concepts were created in basements and garages. Also the part about the fact that big companies use their brand alone to promote crap is a definite truth. I'm on it!

Very surprised that Xing doesn't get a mention...
  • David Jeffrey Wright · 8 months ago
I am really surprised XING did not make this list. They bought Social|Median to interface with Facebook and Twitter somehow, I guess we will see Jason Goldberg's big surprise soon. Here I go again to critically evaluate these 10, well 9 I am already on LinkedIn but I don't like it because when you join groups you create a constant stream of spam to your inbox.

I -just started the Embassy of Social Networks today, I am curious as to how I will interface these networks with 120 countries, 60 international civic organizations, and 200+ social networks?

This has proven to be a really good article for those who create or generate contacts online for business. I am just really disappointed XING did not make the list, they are certainly higher in the rankings globally than most of these networks.

Thanks guys for this list of 10 sites for the professional networker. We would certainly see ZaaBiz (www.zaabiz.com) in this list - though our 150,000 members are mainly from Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia and therefore not that US centric. So, whenever you have an international view on these networks, add www.zaabiz.com to your list.

We started a new UK Small Business Network Social Media Site last month http://www.uksbn.com/ and have been staggered at the take up. I thought we would only have a handful of people on by this time but it just goes to show you the hunger people have to get on board, especially if it fits their needs. Another great Social Network that is available to any budding internet marketer is
Promotion and Advertising Club. This is an exciting up and coming Network with
a personal family feel to go with it. Meet like minded business people and learn
how to promote your goods and services like the experts do.

There are hundreds of high quality articles in the Blogging Area written by
award winning article writer Richard Donlevy which cover a huge range of subjects
on all things Networking. And there is also a very active forum containing a variety
of topics and subjects. With regular competitions and prizes, featured members
and RSS Feeds available this Social Network for online business people is one of the best!

The best thing about the Network though is the personal touch provided by the owners.
They have discovered a niche in the market where they offer their personal help and
guidance for free. That's right, if you are stuck on something or need to pick someone's
mind, then they are only an email away. It's what seperates them from the rest!

Another great way to own and operate a social network is through SNEmpire.com. This company is cutting edge and has some of the best internet consultants that I've ever worked with.

The social network that you would own, allows you to use your domain name and has countless amounts of liberties that other mediums leave out.

The best part, for me anyway, is that you get to generate a massive list of leads for affiliate marketing purposes and this allows you to make a steady income, just from catering to your targeted users.

I give snempire.com (social network empire) 2 thumbs up!

It is so important that you get you and your business out there through social networking. You need to dive in feet first and take the chance. Everyone is looking for someone, and you never know who is ready to help you. So by being on more than one social outlet, you exponentially increase your chance of generating business and making those connections with the right people.

LoopDesk.com is an Online Business Networking Group that allows members to connect solely for business purposes. We have created an online environment that allows Nationwide and Worldwide Business to Business Marketing (B2B) without spending a lot of money. The LoopDesk experience is unique in that you will connect directly to business owners, partners and decision makers only.

How do we differ from referral groups or other business networking sites? Simple, our members utilize their company image and brand to gain exposure throughout the country and the world. There are no extended personal profiles to review, but simply services offered by companies, what they might be seeking and direct information on what they can do for you as a fellow business owner. Now, we are not trying to replace face to face networking, as that is still very important and vital to businesses, but our online environment can reach beyond local networks and weekly meetings and help create opportunities with people in different areas. We simply suggest using LoopDesk as an additional tool for those looking to gain awareness for their business.

I have accounts in most of the sites you mentioned, but I personally like Young Entrepreneur because it's a great site to mingle and keep in touch with other business owners around the world.

I just went to cofoundr.com and they won't let me register because I don't have a "work or school" email address! Are you kidding me? A site for the solo entrepreneur and they don't allow personal email. Unbelievable.

Though I like your post as very valuable but things have been changing. with ning.com, you can create your own social network. I just created one at http://ur-faves.ning.com/ and it took me minutes.

Though twitter.com is being used for ... ,whatever, it is at best a chat program with public dialog "in short hand".

There are sites better in every aspect emerging all the time and in nutshell there is a point of obsolescence to technology. Only flexible enough of the listed would be able to resist the challenge of competition.

Now that's the million dollar must-have list. Maybe you can do a list on video sites. I am getting into video marketing and I only know of YouTube and Adwido, but I would like to know more.

I am using LinkedIn, participating in StartUpNation and joining YounEntrepreneur. These places on the Interenet are really very useful to entrepreneurs. Socializing, sharing ideas, seeking answers and giving answers are ways of learning and reaching my entrepreneural goals. Thanks for sharing this article and resources.
