Hi Dave - I don't want to capitalize on SiteMeter's woes, but we've been up continuously for an extremely long time now - we specialize in 'small gestalt' maps which users 'show off' on their sites, and also pride ourselves on fast personal support, even for the free service. But mission-critical corporate stats are a different matter, and you have to make the judgement call for yourself... give us a try, or drop us a line!

You know, I have to say this. I love that the internet has made company politics transparent. As an example, I located a site called comcastmustdie.com a few weeks ago when I was having a hell of a time with the horrible service AND CUSTOMER service with them. The site is fabulous. Comcast actually checks it. I posted my account number as instructed by the owner of the site (he's honcho of some kind, but I forgot what his deal is) and sure enough, they were on the phone with me the next day apologetic as hell. Like they missed all my other communications, but THIS they reply to?

My point is, there have got to be more sites like that sprung up. When you email and kvetch on the phone with these companies, it's hidden mostly from the public. Get them to realize their service is so bad that there is an entire SITE dedicated ONLY to JUSTIFIED complaints, and watch them straighten up. It takes time, but it makes a difference.

Personally, for my two sites, I have never noticed downtime, but now I wonder how many possible customer to one of my sites have been lost due to this. Hmmmm. Glad I found this site.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know FireFox users ARE affected. We get a message that says Bad Request (Invalid Hostname). Good thing I did a Google search on "Sitemeter down" and found you guys. Just wanted to let you know. It's 12:40 a.m. in NJ.

I wonder, are you down as much as they? I've been a sitemeter user for many years, back when David gave personalized support. Once they were bought/consumer by someone larger, they support went down the toilet. I've sent many, many emails to them about constant problems from them which caused us downtime, and they seldom, if ever, reply.

We spent the night writing them out of hundreds of pages on our business sites for the last time. They have cost us too much money for the info gleened over the last few years. I think an ap on our server is the way to go. They are the last vestige of 3rd party junk on our system to be removed to we don't have losses incurred by others beyond our control.

My several years of experience with Sitemeter would suggest to flush sitemeter down the toilet. I can't count the times they've been down for something that they would never reply about. They will, however, be happy to charge your card every month no matter of their problems.

As a 3rd party analytics provider, we feel SiteMeter's pain... blackouts like this are no fun for anyone.

Like SiteMeter, ClustrMaps provides a 'plain vanilla' option - pure HTML, simple JPG only, no javascript, no cookies, nothing fancy... unlike SiteMeter's detailed stats, we provide a 'simple gestalt map' showing at a glance all visitor locations... many user's have em both... anyway, wishing everyone a speedy recovery from this blip.

I switched my code back to HTML lastnight and I went to sitemeters blog just a few minutes ago and they have fixed the problem....seems all is well....

I keep telling my readers...GET FIREFOX!!!

I also switched all my sitemeter code to the HTML version and it fixed the problem. Fingers crossed that sitemeter gets on the ball quickly and finds a solution for this.

Google Analytics is NOT real-time... If your website is mentioned on Mashable you'd have no idea until a day or so later. By then people would have commented on the article and you'd have no chances of responding... This is just one example.

Google Analytics wouldn't work for people who need/want real-time web analytics... I use the one I developed: http://www.i-stats.com It works like a champ and if you're worried about 3rd party servers going down or bugs, you can get the server version and install it on your server. Done, problem solved!

Disclaimer I didn't debug their code before writing this so what I am going to suggest might be completely wrong :)

I am familiar with this error on Internet Explorer 6 and 7. It usually happens when a script is trying to write to the DOM (Document Object Model) of the browser before it was completely loaded. It happens only on IE not FF.

I took a look at the script loaded by Valleywag:

One place I suspect might be the problem is on their init() function. It calls the "onPageLoad" function before they checked if the DOM was completely loaded. On that function they are writing to the DOM as mentioned above.

I noticed this at work yesterday but finally googled the problem, thanks for saving me from ultimate confusion. Just removed the new beta script for Sitemeter and all should be good. This is the very reason why I have IE and Firefox on my system because if one doesnt work with a particular web page the other usually does.

Thanks for the tip! I thought that IE (which I use seldom, since I'm a Mac user anyway) was infected by a virus, since my own blog and several others were failing for no apparent reason!

This error blew up my site, too (www.nofactzone.net), and I've seen it mentioned on a bunch of different blogs. Switching to the straight HTML code seems to fix the error ... for now. So we'll see.

Thanks for saving me about two hours of wasted time on the phone trying to figure out what's wrong with my browser/operating system/firewall! I thought it might have something to do with a Java update that just went through, but that didn't check out.

When I couldn't reach my own site (www.photographymuseum.com ) I searched Google News and found your blog entry. Now... should I expect a fast fix from Sitemeter or just yank the code from the page?
