Google almost certainly missed the boat on this one: Dodgeball could easily have been Twitter, and they had a substantial headstart.

Also, if they want to get in the mobile space now, they'll need to acquire Twitter or Jaiku.

Most likely outcome: Yahoo acquires Twitter, since it has almost the exact same demographic as Flickr.

Maybe they just wanted the domain?

Sucks for those guys... maybe. How much did they make on the acquisition?

Google sure dropped the ball on this one. Amazing how fast Twitter has grown in just the past couple months.

another venue that google dismiss... i mean if they have dismissed Blogger.. who could not see them dropping the ball on this too.. and yeah Yahoo would be the perfect candidate to buy twitter now.

a lot of little battle lost when you are focused on the war.. but so it is when companies get BIG..

this is the other side of google , the side when they act the same way MS does. Both have high priorites..

This is a famous blog posting about Google killing it's own Dodgeball in 2007 before trying to buy Twitter two years later. This was quite possibly one of the biggest missed opportunities of all time. I am surprised that nobody has commented in a year. One can be sure that Google managers didn't see the search aspect at all when they bought and, later, killed Dodgeball. Twitter itself only today realized that they are not about "What are you doing right now" as much as "What is happening where you are now"...which takes the focus off often boring individuals and onto hyperlocal news...not incidentally the last refuge of newspapers.
