Forget about Apple tying in all kinds of third parties to deliver more value to .Mac. It's not like them, it gives away too much control. .Mac is meant as a simple way to keep several machines synchronized and it does that just fine. They might bring the price down a bit, I agree with you on that, but don't expect Apple to start all kinds of functionality that's hard to explain to "your mom" just to get extra users.

They can start by making iWeb part of .Mac, not iLife. Then finish by dramatically lowering the price. I use it to synchronize my calendars and for a stable email address. Everything else I get for free from my ISP.
What ever happened to Jobs' promise of great things to come for .Mac (at the same time he called AppleTV a "hobby")?!?

Think of the amazingly vibrant community platform they could have integrated into .mac by now. Imagine if each mac owner had an option of creating a user profile to share with all other owners. Of course not everyone would be interested, but mac owners are drawn together as tightly as almost any other brand. But they did nothing other than offer email services you have to pay for. They certainly let a giant opportunity slip away over some cockamamie revenue plan.

Dotmac will never be free. Apple is smart enough to realise that the future is in cloud software, files and services. Dotmac ensures they will have a great path and revenue stream to deliver their software, when the critical mass of people switch from the desktop to the cloud approach to computing.

The problem I have with Dot Mac is the fact that it has one price and features fit all. Not everyone has two or more Mac's Although I am Steve Jobs wished you did. So maybe Sync and backup may not be in your cards. Maybe you don't even care to have a web page. Maybe you just want Mail. Why would you pay $100 for a Mail service?? It's really no better then any other unless you car to Sync to Mac's. Why does Apple not upgrade or improve dot Mac. Simple, theirs enough Mac Fans paying $100 so they don't need too! Let's face it though. If you have already paid more for a computer buying a Apple, and have forked out hundreds for a iphone or some other Apple product. Then $100 for email is no big deal. Im sure for the general consumer, this makes Apple look like a real ripoff.

While I do agree that dotmac is pricey, it is great for the user who wants a simple and easy way to sync, store and maintain from simple, elegant websites. I agree with Max R, as it is an easy sell to the novice computer user. I do want to note though that I have been a dotmac user since its inception and it was originally FREE! It was first called iTools and was heavily targeted to educators. It has come a long way since these days, even though it is still not the innovative service that it could be. Who wouldn't love lower prices, more storage and more integration with web 2.0 and music. I am holding out hope that dotmac will transform soon!
