I like your analysis of the reasoning behind putting the 'elite' WSJ social network behind a firewall. Interestingly, there is at least one other prominent example of this: the U.S. Intelligence Community's INTELINK (https://www.intelink.gov/) and the Defense Community's various sites (see for example, Joint Knowledge Online http://jko.jfcom.mil/).

Did you see this article on the Journal's inappropriate excitement level over the recent catastrophe? Wonder if the crisis is helping their pay-wall network. :)
