Oh, the big bad thing is that there's not a Mac version yet!

    It is due soon anyway...
  • whazzzz up? · 1 year ago
    And Linux too. Yay!
  • Daniel · 1 year ago
Just a general question to everybody: All newscoverage says that Chrome is much faster than any other browser. Unfortunately not with me, even with emptied cache of firefox. So what is the overall experience of others?
  • Vinay · 1 year ago
Has anyone noticed couple of issues with Chrome yet? No efficient management of Bookmarks..? I imported my firefox bookmarks (loads!!) and when I wanted to remove few it was hard for me to do so... by opening bookmarks and deleting them one after another.

Firefox Bookmark manage was much better... but I believe since this is a beta version.. the future versions should have a good fix for it.

Also using my Dell Laptop, the scroll from touch pad is bad.. when you try to move the page down. it goes to bottom of the page. and same for top... goes to to start of page. No control over mouse movements/touch pad in Laptop.. (or it just with me?).

    Cheers!
  • Ranoo · 1 year ago
Nope..Even i am facing the same issue with the laptop touchpad. Scrolling up and down is difficult with the touchpad unless you click on teh vertical scroll bar.
  • Kyle · 1 year ago
I had a similar problem with my dell touchpad where it would go immediately to the bottom of the page, but it would not scroll up at all using the sidebar.
  • Joe · 1 year ago
I have the same problem. I hope they fix it in future versions.
  • TooheyMomster · 1 year ago
I LOVE IT!!! If you don't have it, you should definately give it a try!!
  • ZenBug · 1 year ago
I'm sure this will be attractive for the average user, but I don't see how any power user could get used to this any time soon. I live and die by my FF extensions. I'm already going crazy without Scrollbar Anywhere, Faviconize Tab, etc.
  • tim · 1 year ago
Am I missing it, or is it not possible to view available feeds via a browser rss button, as with firefox and flock. This is a feature I regularly use.
  • Michael · 1 year ago
Honestly, the intelligent start page is for the most part useless compared to Opera's Quick Dial. Quick dial allows for shortcut commands and lets you set the pages you want. If this was a Microsoft product, I think people would complain and moan about how they made a poor rip off of an Opera feature. However, since it's Google, it's innovative and wonderful. Don't get me wrong, I like Chrome, I'm just very disappointed by how they decided to implement this feature when one that works so well already exists.
  • dan · 1 year ago
    well said.
  • IT_guy · 1 year ago
The only thing I miss from Firefox is the SEO Quake bar, but I don't really need it every single day.

I'm definitely loving Chrome. It won't be the only browser I use - I need my FF extensions as much as the next developer - but it will probably be my default browser for a nice long while.
  • Roger · 1 year ago
Its faster than Firefox for me, also remains stable and fast over long periods of time with 7-10 tabs open, which Firefox wasn't. I think this is a very decent effort for a first shot.

I like that its nice and minimalistic, fast and obviously engineered better. And there are little things you discover as you go along. That’s clearly an advantage of starting up.

I am missing extensions the most, especially noscript, google notes, ubiquity and delicious. However the omni bar bar does have some of Ubiquity’s capabilities especially search, but not preview or functions like translate, currency, etc. For delicious I just dragged a bookmarklet from the delicious site to the chrome bookmarks toolbar and that works great. So am looking forward to some extension capabilities. But its a fantastic piece of work. and can only get better. Everyone likes speed and efficiency.

Did you read EULA? What do you think about that? Especially paragraph 11?

    Are they serious about it?

...no-one else seems to mind. I take this to mean that anything I EVER do within Chrome can be used by google anyway they want, forever??? - Seriously?

Can't say I'd noticed that until you pointed it out. Hmmm.
  • Crystaql · 1 year ago
I really love Chrome but have found some things that make me open up my Firefox browser on the side anyway.

    1. I get a windows disk error everytime I open Chrome, which is odd. I can bypass it without any issue but it's a strange error.

    2. Some links don't work in Chrome. For example, in Facebook in the wall, dynamic commenting doesn't seem to work. You can't comment from your own profile but you have to click through and then comment directly on the wall, which is annoying. I've noticed other strangeness in Facebook.

    3. In Google spreadsheets you can't right click on a line number and get the drop down to be able to insert.

Will there be plug ins? I miss Stumbleupon and if there is any ONE thing that drives me crazy it's that there is no adblocker. I doubt Google will go that route but that could be a deal breaker for me.

Overall it seems to be a bit buggy in some of the more dynamic functionality on some Web sites. But for coming out of the gate as a beta, WOW.

Facebook applications did not work in Chrome as nicely as they work in Firefox. Did anybody notice that? Is it that Flash is slow in Chrome?

Also Firefox addons rock.....I am still die hard fan of FF :-)
  • Jon · 1 year ago
Facebook isn't adapted to Chrome yet because it's a new browser. Things on Facebook won't work exactly right because they haven't had enough time yet to tweak Facebook for Chrome's slight differences from the other browsers in how it renders pages.

The thing I like most... browser competition and the ending of a proprietary monopoly.

The thing I like least... the terms of service:

I LOVE being able to move the browser tabs around- Google read my mind on that one.

However, I'm going to have to second the 'When are plug-ins allowed?' inquiry- I want my Stumbleupon, and my Google toolbar (imagine that... it isn't set up for it's own browser!) with all the nifty buttons I use everyday like Page Rank.

I'll have to keep more than one browser open, at least for the time being.
  • Bob · 1 year ago
Moving tabs in Chrome is no different to IE but just looks better graphically.

I totally agree with the toolbar problem. It makes you realize how much you rely on them.

Im excited about the Chrome browser but will have to sick with IE until i can install Roboform and Google toolbar into Chrome

Yeah I love it... the only downfall I have had so far is viewing photos on Facebook.. There is some sort of glitch as when you want to view the next pic in a album gallery. It will show u the next pic 4 about half a second then go back to the old pic...
Just keeps doing it... Is ok in Firefox... didnt even think 2 check it in Explorer.. :-)

    It's all about speed baby.

Am test driving Chrome right now and, so far, it kicks the backside of IE (7). For some reason Firefox never won me over so I'm not feeling the missing plug-in pain expressed extensively above.

Wouldn't class myself as a hardcore user (I'd say I'm somewhere between regular Joe and Geek) and it seems to meet my needs really well. Love the simplicity - note to MS!

Don't forget the "Home" screen! That is awesome! I love seeing my trashy gossip shortcuts as tiny thumbnails! :)
  • revbean · 1 year ago
Safari's actually been able to move tabs around for a while too.
  • Jamie Lin · 1 year ago
Besides speed and multi-processing, I like its small things such as you can stretch input boxes (text areas) when you need a bigger space to write. Animation on tab opening/closing is also nice -- they've definitely learned a couple UI tricks from working with Apple.

However, Chrome didn't import all my RSS/"live bookmarks". Now I have to switch to a (/Google) reader if I really want to use Chrome as default browser. It also didn't come with many of the Google Toolbar features that I've come to get used to, such as auto linking address, highlighting keyword and mouse-over translation.
  • g · 1 year ago
i love chrome. it's intuitive, blazing fast, and immensely reduces the visual clutter. and i love the all in one address/search bar that learns over time. i feel like i'm browsing again, as opposed to searching, searching, searching.

one problem though: add-ons. i'm not sure what to do without my firefox add-ons and the most noticeable missing items are extensions for tagging (delicious) and saving all the wonderful new information i'm finding (google notebook - ironic that isn't built in somehow).
  • Roger · 1 year ago

Maybe it's just me, but I've yet to successfully open a PDF without Chrome locking up. I love the interface but if I have to save Acrobat documents and open them separately what's the use?
  • xxdesmus · 1 year ago
It's not all that easy to switch considering it doesn't support ANY of my Firefox extensions which is 75% of why most people use Firefox. As for why it starts up so fast, it's not hard when you have the absolute bare minimum features in your browser. It's a good start, but it's too basic right now for anyone who is even vaguely a power user. Typical Google product: over-hyped, under-featured, and LOVED by all the mindless fanboys.
  • Reinhardt · 1 year ago
I tried it but now the Google-Update.exe will always connect to the internet.... why!!!!!

And I will stay with IE and FF - and come on Microsoft stop Google on the Internet!!!!!!

    Please.....

    I love this company!!!!
  • Geoffrey Allan Plauche · 1 year ago
Regarding #3 Incognito mode, Firefox doesn't have anything like that built in but there is a nice extension called Stealther that does the same thing (except not on a tab by tab basis).
  • CW · 1 year ago
I have been building a web based application in ASP.NET and the pages are loading ridiculously fast. I like a lot of the little features, but the speed at which it is handling retrieving data from the server is better than IE or FireFox so far. Now what we are talking about is a fraction of a second compared to a couple seconds, but still. For the end user, any lag on a mundane task is annoying.
  • Duane · 1 year ago
Chrome has a few features under the hood which will hopefully push other browsers to start addressing the fact that web applications need a better platform. Embedding the new Javascript V8 engine and Google Gears is a great idea for Google.

However, let's be real here. As a browser Google Chrome is crappy right now. They took many of the great features from other browsers such as dragging tabs around, smart address bar and the start page on new tabs but have left out numerous other great features. Of course most everyone thinks these features are innovative since they have never seen them with their current browser, but we Opera users sit back in amazement since we have had these features for a while now.

I too have had bad experiences already with Google Chrome. It hung at 100% CPU on me within just a few minutes of working in Google Docs which is incredibily ironic. I had to use Process Explorer to shut the application down. BTW, I use Google Docs daily with Opera which is officially unsupported by Google but yet it has always worked fine for me.

Of course being from Google, it is beta right now. It is open source and Google has many fans so maybe someday it will be able to compete.

Unfortunately, Chrome doesn't seem to have a portable option (I bought a faster USB stick just to run Portable FF3 faster) - which is a deal killer for me.

It would also be nice if it came with a proxy switcher and an ad blocker since there don't appear to be such add-ons or extensions for it yet. Suppose I shouldn't hold my breath for an ABP equivalent :-)
  • Nich · 1 year ago
Google Chrome is very impressive so far, but FYI Safari has allowed users to pull tabs out of its window for a while now.
  • Sully · 1 year ago
Out of your list of 7 awesome things, the only one that is "new and improved" is the task manager. I noticed the NY Times article on Chrome inserted the names of other browsers (Opera, Firefox) with similar functionality, like the home page.

Yes, impressive work. Nice job on the javascript improvements. And the security features. Great comic book on the features though.

Some of the "new and improved" stuff is a bit of a stretch it seems. In addition to Mozilla, and Webkit, they owe a debt to the much maligned Java applet - the orignal "sandbox". And multi-threaded? McCool and Andreesen's Netscape used multithreading brilliantly. So browsers have been multithreaded since the ancient days, what they are probably talking about is how the GUI client works, not the underlying browser engine.

So improvements, and incremental. Good work folks.
  • John · 1 year ago
I also have a problem middle clicking to open a new tab, it will open the new tab but will sometimes load that page in the current window too. I don't really miss the add-ons, I seldom used them, I would like to see themes though, blue just doesn't really do it. Also the best thing about FF was view: no style, I'd like to see that on chrome also.

I have had some problems with plug-ins, mostly flash.

Over all I like it, but I still have to use FF from time to time, can't wait for it to become a real release instead of beta.
  • Grobyc · 1 year ago
I like Chrome so far. I would still rank it right under Opera as my favorite. Sorry, Firefox has taken way too much from Opera and unfairly getting credit for it. I always found it slow and clumsy and it never really meshed well with the Windows UI (doesn't it use GTK?). Many of the features pointed out in this article have already been present in Opera (tab dragging, the Speed Dial feature, and even others not mentioned like address bar functionality, etc.).

Overall I don't think anything really beats Opera as far as features and usability, but I like some of the new features Chrome has brought. The option to make a webpage into an application is a nice touch since it blurs the distinction that you are in fact looking at a web page. Makes web apps integrate more seemlessly into the operating system. If anything Google is actually showing me more than Mozilla has done in the past 5 years.
  • Samwise · 1 year ago
    Chrome is superb.
Some things i noticed were that firstly, its address bar also works as a search bar and on right clicking it, it also allows to select a particular search engine and secondly, the javascript and feeds are not working properly. Wel, switching to a new browser had never been so easy.

My fav thing about Chrome is the way it intelligently loads pages. The content of the page is treated as high priority so it's the first thing that pops up. The ads transition in slowly which is very neat :)
  • x0ne · 1 year ago
It's certainly a nice browser and fast, dragging tabs to new windows and dragging windows back isnt new to Chrome though, you could already do this is Safari, the only difference is Safari didn't have the tab bar always on by default so it wasn't so apparent.

I dislike the password storage - the part that bothers me is that if you save a password, you're able to view it in clear text after the fact. You don't dare leave your computer unattended by accident. I think this is a huge security hole - I should be able to toggle it to a mode where it will store passwords but not reveal. Frankly, being passwords, they should never be revealed.
  • David Greiman · 1 year ago
Prediction: Firefox will adapt to match many of these features rather quickly.

I am enjoying how fast Chrome is and it will be my default browser for a minute. I am missing the way FF handles bookmarks and of course if Chrome had Adblock Plus, Greasemonkey, and a few other extensions it would be over for Firefox. Until then Firefox will remain on my system. It's so strange going to my usual websites like Digg and seeing ads for the first time. I was like WTF???
  • jord · 1 year ago
i find the scroll is too sensitive and the lack book mark organisation is annoying but as said before this is a beta so fingers crossed
  • brian · 1 year ago
    Dislikes:

    1. When you do right-click and Open in a New Tab, it doesn't switch to the new tab. You have to select the new tab to see what you just opened.

    2. No way to clear individual pieces of history. Must clear the entire day.

    3. No way to customize the home page (which is overall pretty cool).

    4. Bookmarks in browser don't integrate with online Google Bookmarks. I can get the Google Toolbar for IE which has functionality to work with Google Bookmarks, but it can't be done with the Google Browser. Do I need to install the Google Toolbar on the Google Browser??

I've had problems with the uncontrollable scrolling as well, even though I'm clicking the scroll bar. It's infrequent, though.

I'm a fan of the front page.

i know its beta but one of the things i keep running into is actually load times and freezes. one of the big features touted was being multithreaded and the ability for the browser to be useful and functional if one of the tabs dies on you. however, ive seen the opposite, as if i have many tabs open, and 1 takes to long to load or freezes i have 0 control with little to no ability to reach my other tabs or even close the one thats having the issues. once again, ill chalk it up to beta, but its pretty annoying as even something as simple as a forum wont load at the same speed as on firefox or even ie and the whole browser just freezes up for like 20 seconds.

Google is just what they claim - fast, efficient and user friendly. No doubt Micro$oft will be very worried. I will definitely stay with it as long as an ad blocker is available as an add in. Surfing with Chrome has reminded me just how little i miss all those freaking annoying ads. If it stays open source, I just can't see how they will stop an ad blocker. At last there is true competition in computing and look how fast innovation is improving the computing experience. For that we should be truly thankful to Google.

The EULA is thge standard google EULA that they use for anything around their site. Paragraph 11 is mainly for when you use google tools to create your own applications. So it should not affect anything you do within the browser...unless its a mod/add-on or something. But its the same anywhere. Firefox takes the same authority on any add-ons created for their browser

Mostly good article, but I disagree with 2 things, the speed of the browser is good but the speed of switching tabs is shocking compared to any other browser. Also the switching is more difficult than you make out without the key feature of a home button which many users base lots of browsing around.

  • iwebflash · 1 year ago
I think Chrome is very good browser. Neat, lean and fast. I still think Google will face an uphill battle to get the average net surfer to switch browsers. I am not talking about tech heads who try anything new, I am talking about the non techie users who are your critial mass. If you look at the new Google service insight which gives you a graph of search term usage over time, you will see the keyword "Chrome browser", popularity is now dwindling. It is the same for Firefox 3 which peaked when they were trying to break the record for most downloads. I thik it is just too hard to get people (specially non - technical users) to download a new piece of software, and then install it. The non-techies just don't want to mess around with their computers if everthing is working fine. Firefox has been there for a long time, and it is a pretty awesome browser, plus all the add-ins that you can choose from, but still nowhere near Microsoft's IE, which is a crap browser.

But it is just as hard to get people to switch online services as well. They are used to a site and people just stick with it. I mean there are thousands of Social Networking sites out there, and new ones being released everyday, but people still flock to Facebook. People who started using Hotmail, Yahoomail etc still use the same mail program. Although I must admit I have seen a good uptake of Gmail.

I am no Micrososft fan, but I remember Bill Gates says the best day for any new Google product is the day it is released. I know from personal experience it is very hard to get people to change their habit. As human beings we just don't like change. Its programmed into us.

Thanks for the list! This is really just the beginning for google chrome. There will be so many add-ons right around the corner. It will be interesting to see how they progress in the future. Here is a good article that talks a bit more about this. . .

Sometimes when I leave chrome on in the background theres a strange, very infrequent, short scraping sound. Took me ages to track down where this damn noise comes from but it goes away when chrome is closed.

Yeah, Chrome's really well-thought-out, and it really works. I thought I'd check it out and it earned it's place as My Favourite Browser very quickly. I found your review because I'd torn off a tab and thought "Hmmm, there ought to be a way to un-tear it." There is! Well done Google. Some of it might not be 100% original, but the mix of features is, and they turned out to be the ones I'd mix myself if I had the smarts.
