Yeah, this is a huge industry. One thing I would be interested in knowing: how is MySpace's own slideshow tool doing? The code is along the lines of:
http://lads.myspace.com/slides/slideshow_random...
It's not the easiest tool to find, and not as functional as the rest, but there must be at least a few MySpacers going for this option, simply because it's there. If it isn't doing too well, then there's probably hope for external developers who think they'll be crushed if MySpace releases a competing product.
One question, how do you query the pages? Do you download them all and put them into a DB for full-text searches?
Great write up. As the posters above me have mentioned, what's the % of profiles that included a slideshow? That space is growing at a fast pace. It will will be cool to see who wins. :D
I chose to launch the Slideroll slideshow creator in a pop-up for several usability reasons. First, I launch without any toolbars to allow for enough vertical real estate for the creator to be used by people running at 800x600. Also, launching without toolbars prevents people from accidentally navigating away from the page and losing their work.
These reasons may be a little old-fashioned, but I launched in 2004 (before all of these other guys) so perhaps the site is showing it's age. Anyway, thanks for the mention.
By the way, I've never seen the creator get blocked by any pop-up blocker, as the creator is launched in direct reponse to a user click, not automatically when someone visits the page. If you've actually seen this happen, please verify. If not, I'd appreciate a correction. Thanks!
I was primarily interested in third-party products, but in all fairness MySpace’s slideshow creator deserves a mention and it’ll be included in future research. It’s doing alright, though, and would have placed third in this research. Like you said, its good info for developers concerned about getting crushed by MySpace’s own products.
You have the basic idea correct. We locate pages from a cache containing specific content using keyword and/or phrase searches . Each page is then post-processed with our own mining tools to filter unwanted content such as comments.
Keep up the good work :)
There are cases of this in slideroll. I can show you. Let me know best way to contact you.
Kelvin,
Good write up. Very helpful. I've added Mashable to my AJAX startpage.
Thanks for taking the time. Click my name and it will take you to the contact form on Slideroll. That e-mails straight to me.
It looks and works great, BUT it consistently eats an avg. of 48% of CPU Usage for me, and the default, as with all the players it seems, is to have it moving when you load the page.
This is problematic for me, but also for visitors. Combine it with a streaming video or a music, and the system maxes out at 100% CPU usage.
Any comment on this? Would any of the other players be better in this regard?
