That's the problem. You get a free pass if you violate rights, law and common sense in doing that.

And the beauty is, unlike all other forms of evidence, it is illegal to show as proof that the charge is not bogus prima-facia, much less be subject to proper, independent review.

So, just as a mental exercise for y'all, how hard would it be to get some kiddy porn onto the hard drive of someone you disliked, even without direct physical access?

And of course, that proves they are a pedophile, you need not consider that they might have been involved in something else that might annoy or distress others.

Ling, if they flexed in the right direction in any of these cases, this would be a significantly less newsworthy piece.

The fact that Google has no coherent policy on this, and always seems to err on the side of stupid, with few rare exceptions, is disturbing to those of us who really love google services and have invested a lot of personal data with them.

Not that I condone those jerks on Orkut, but generally speaking, why is Google's flexibity on censorsip and privacy a bad thing? I remember last year, (or was it the year before?) the DOJ asked for search data based on queries from all 3 of the big search engines - Google, Yahoo and MSN. The other two voluntarily turned over the data, and noboby would even have found out if Google hadn't gone to court over the issue. I'd say that Google's policy on privacy reflects a pretty good balance between pragmatism and safety of users' privacy.
