Microsoft committed to supporting OpenID. Is this effort compatible or in conflict with that?

And, why don't you support OpenID on Mashable.com?

Microsoft should at a minimum make Live ID an OpenID identifier. This will allow using Live ID anywhere OpenID is accepted. If sites want to ONLY allow Live ID users to use their service (can't really imagine why) they can use the Live ID SDK, otherwise, just use OpenID.

    Re: Will this Hurt OpenID?

It all depends on how committed Microsoft is to the "industry". If they want to dominate, they probably will.

They've had an OpenID-like system for 5+ years now called Passport. Ebay used it for a while. I remember there were other sites that did too.

But, Microsoft wasn't committed to it.

So, the question really is, "How committed is Microsoft to the success of the LiveID system?"

I wonder how this will differ from Microsoft's efforts when they offered the same service when it was called Passport?
