    Nice list!
  • whazzzz up? · 1 year ago
    I agree!
  • Ryan Schultz · 2 years ago
I do appreciate these lists, but it's seems there could more editorial review and/or comparisons. These lists are getting to the point where they are becoming just an elaborate list someone could but together through a resourceful use of google. Perhaps we could crowdsource your readers to split up the task of reviewing these monsters.
  • serg · 2 years ago
Why did you placed JIRA into this list? It's not open source project!
  • @ndrew · 11 months ago
Yeah I noticed that too :-P
  • MasterWills · 2 years ago
What the hell does OSS have to do with social networking news?

I am extremely close to unsubscribing because this blog has completely lost focus. It is trying to be everything to everyone. Editorial content is minimal.

These lists/toolboxes have killed what used to be a good, focused blog.
  • CountRob · 2 years ago
Ares and LimeWire are the best programs on there. Because with them you don't need any buggy open source apps, you can get the good stuff at a "discount".

You'll save a lot of money on commercial software with Ares and LimeWire. A LOT of money...
  • sylv3rblade · 2 years ago
This has got to be the worst list I've seen. Too many inconsistencies and most of the time you don't even specify w/c OS the programs work with. What do you expect the readers to think? That all of them are multiplatform?

Other than that most of the descriptions are easily google-able.
  • arikun · 2 years ago
    you forgot about Open Office!!!!
  • Themebot · 2 years ago
you may want to add web sites that have open source web design templates to the list.

You missed Hyperic - an enterprise system and application management solution for all your web infrastructure, including robust support for virtualization.

    Nice resources list.
I've completed the list with some networking related resources here :

  • Noah · 2 years ago
You should remove Gaim from the list, since you already have Pidgin (in fact, the Gaim link redirects to the Pidgin homepage). Having both is disingenuous.

From which software is the screenshot of accounting section?
  • daksh · 2 years ago
The screenshot of accounting software is "Grisbi" software.
  • James Rouse · 2 years ago
Firefox runs on OS X also!
  • BrandonZ · 2 years ago
I've just recently made a C# open-source app that you guys might find very useful.

    http://brandonz.net/zscreen

ZScreen is an open-source screen capture program that allows for region/window/full-screen screenshots. It can FTP screenshots and put the URL in your clipboard in a single keystroke. It supports automatic custom naming conventions with variables. It can also interface with image editing software. The source code is available via Sourceforge.net.

Why is OpenOffice missing from the list?
  • Joe · 2 years ago
    @CountRob - Limewire!??! Honestly?!!?

Limewire is *THE* biggest piece of sh!t software ever written. The shear amount of security holes it opens into Windows XP, allowing spyware to come flooding in, is tragic at best and malicious at worst.

I've been a SysAdmin for 10 years and I haven't seen such a widely-used piece of software cause so many problems, problems caused simply by its installation.

Otherwise, this is a great list. Some more detail about each program would be great, but a very nice list indeed.

    My list is here:
    http://www.digitaldarknet.net/thelist/index.php

Why do people insist on including Linux apps? Most distros have a software tool, to not only install and update open software, that lets you search for most of this software. It just clutter here...
  • Andy · 2 years ago
Excellent list with the notable exception of leaving out OpenOffice, one of the better products out there.
  • thinkopen · 2 years ago

You could add a graphic viewer XnView (http://perso.orange.fr/pierre.g/xnview/enhome.html) to the list. I find it a great substitute to commercial ACDSee package.

    Hey, Man!

MPlayer was not written with Python.
    MPlayes written with C(maybe C++).

You are mixed MPlayerC and MPlayer.

MPlayer was written with C and it is real player (or engine) (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/).

And MPlayerC is only gui for MPlayer, and MPlayerC was written with Python.

Don`t try to compare apples with green ...
  • Govindaraj · 2 years ago
    Good compilation. Thanks
  • Andrew · 2 years ago
An open source God?! Where?? Dude, that would be sooo much fun to fiddle with... Compile time would be a pain, though.
  • Sean P. Aune · 2 years ago
ROFLMAO and then there would be inevitable security flaws. "Hey everyone, we need to upgrade to God 4.1.2, it's a security hole fix!"
  • Donncha O Caoimh · 2 years ago
OMG! what a list. A couple of useful apps that I didn't know about too. Thanks!
  • Thomas Pedersen · 2 years ago
Not all of the stuff on the list is actually open source. For real open source alternatives - use the searchable index at http://www.osalt.com/ .
There you search for you favorite commercial product - and it will show you the open source alternatives.
Much more useful than this list - also includes better descriptions of each product.
  • Adam Hirsch · 2 years ago
    Thanks Thomas! Great Site!
  • Paul Haag · 2 years ago
Although I'm stunned that OpenOffice is omitted, no doubt this list is a godsend for many users and will likely be the first place they'll look for open source programs. Now, uh, when did you say you were going to publish a review of each individual program to help users decide which program is best for them?

Pidgen and Gaim are the same thing.
    You missed OpenOffice.
    Your descriptions are severely inadequate.
You've got random screenshots and don't even tell what they're from.
Alot of the programs you list aren't even open source.

    Fail.

Watch out for Zimbra. After nearly two years of using Zimbra with Open SuSE they are not going to support Open SuSE in the future versions. This is a low blow and a slap in the face of FOSS. This seriously makes me second guess my decision to go with FOSS. Especially after all the time contributed to the community I'm not sure it was even financially a wise move.

Don't bet your company on FOSS. You may live to regret it.
