I think the 8.93 M is refering to donations and sponsors.
The reason why there have been so many sponsors and advertisements is to help pay for the development of new features, just in case donations don't cut it. Without sponsors, the battle system probably wouldn't even be past sketching character designs.
they buy a certain amount of the stock of the company for over the price it is worth so that if it ever dose hit big they sell the stock for bundles just like they previously did for ebay and myspace
so its not that lanzer sold gaia he just sold a portion of the future gain gaia will make
I'm Onio[n]Flavore[d]IceCream
Look me up!
But seriously,Gaia is the best.
Also addictive.
I Wish It Would Change Back From A Teen Spam Center; As ph33r b0t Said.
I've made so many friends, and had so much fun on this site as a whole, but now everything's going to change. It's alreqady started, I guess... It's not the happy place it was... I knew something felt weird when I logged on the day the layout was changed.
But now in placed like the Gaia Community Discussion forum they're running out of things to talk about, because the people have picked apart the entire site and discussed everything that can be discussed. And now the General Discussion has become a spambox full of "my first time having sex" and "how big is your penis?".
And the brand new layout makes Gaia seem like a MySpace/Neopets mix now... why'd they have to change? The last one was perfect...
But anyhow, I was imediately disappointed by their new layout...saying it looked like Neopets/MySpace was just right...Now it seems that change was because they sold Gaia....what a shame...Its like what happened at Neopets. I had joined the first year they started but just HAD to quit...
There was even more whining about the last one when it came you.
You'll get used to it.
Lanzer is still creator, admin, and owner of Gaia.
it has not been "sold"
Jetsu, outs.
I know. . .it's like a disease this Gaia. haha
I'm Blair_Lafrad! Look me up!
I would suggest they stay away from the General Discussion forum and the Chatterbox, and they should be alright. There's always people who talk about sexual topics and the like in the GD(although it shouldn't be allowed, but it might take a few minutes before the topic is removed or deleted), and there's always people in the CB looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend.
The Chatterbox is everywhere now..
Andways check me out.

As far as the "hacking", there is no system out there that is fool proof, however, unless you have a simple 1234 password or a deceitful friend you told you password to, the site is pretty secure. A good portion of those so-called "hackings" (defined as your account is infiltrated and they take away all of your hard-earned gold and items) are done mostly because people share their sacred password with others- unfortunately, this is something Gaia cannot control. They can warn users of the dangers of such, but what happens on the other side of the computer is not entirely their buisness. They do take the actions to repremand those who do break this real-time law.
It is not ALL true that Gaia is filled with people looking for others to cyber. If people read the ToS (Terms of Service), they would see that this is not allowed. The moderators of GaiaOnline are there on a volunteer basis, and there are actually not enough, in my opinion, to get the job done. There is only so much they can do if they have real-life adult responsabilities, which users forget their lives do not completely revolve around Gaia.
The biggest problem they face is trying to weed out the baddins from the people who don't know any better and just clicked "I Accept" on the first read-me page. It can be a laughable experience just cruising through from thread to thread and see what kind of people are actually out there.
-XOXO-
People need to realize it's a very symbiotic relationship.
We need the admins just as much as they need us.
Also, the admins, Lanzer and such, have changed the site mainly utilizing suggestions by the users themselves. There are always going to be people who like it, and people who don't. If everyone just loved everything all the time, it'd be a boring place. We strive on controversy, so I say let people think what they will. Put up your point of view and share it. It doesn't have to be an arguement of back and forth "no, you're a newb!" It can generally be settled with intelligent conversation. Even if you don't leave with the same ideas/opinions, you got them out.
In any case. Gaia's great. They will always have my support through monthly donations, as well as on the site with what I type out daily.
-Mr. Kenny
The site now looks cleaner and in my opinion is a lot easier to use. Gaia has not sold out, it has received FUNDING, which all large sites and forums will of course need at some point, to keep them lag-free and to help with maintenance. People just need to get over it.
If it weren't for the admins and their choices and decisions, there would be NO Gaia, would you prefer that? Something tells me you wouldn't.
And to the person asking if Gaia is safe, it is as safe as any forum online, and there are a lot of moderators, admins and helpers trying to keep it clean. Just keep an eye on your kids and make sure they know not to give out their details online ^^

But I've been a member since the start (when it was go-gaia), and I am still a member.
How do you know it's undeclared? Unless you work at gaia, you wouldn't know.
when i first joind i loved it! but then after a month or so, i got tired of it and left if for about 6 months, when i came back and fell in love with it all over agian.
but now i feel sad, because it seems, over half of my frineds in real life have a gaia name. i liked it so much when i first joind, because no one eles used it, but now i feel like its turning in to another myspace u.u (damn you myspace>.

if you're "too old" don't worry ;D I'm 18 and I don't feel like quitting anytime soon which is good :]
I don't think seeing boobies messes kids up, but some of that stuff is gross even to me.
The worst part is, they aren't DOING anything about it. They aren't even trying. These boards will stay up for quite some time, and even when one is gone, another pops up.
There's only a handful of them, versus thousands of users who need asistance.
While yes, some threads aren't acted upon instantly, sometimes threads are locked so fast that you can't even get into them seconds after they're created.
And, as a reminder, Gaia is supposed to be for teens and up, so kids shouldn't even be on the site, even though they are. It's not gaia's responsibility to make the website appropriate for fifth graders, because if a fifth grader is on the site without parental permission, they're breaking the ToS, and if they're on the site with permission, then that's the parents' problem, because they were the ones who gave the okay, right?
To be honest, you're probably just unlucky and clicking on the wrong threads. Most forums aren't filled with spam and R-rated material.
except maybe the ones CB.
and most of the violent/explicit threads were made by the youngest members of Gaia, if you think about it. It's not gaia's fault, it's just the way they are. Most of the kids on gaia that I've known tend to get nicer and more mature as time goes on. It's not like being exposed to bad threads necessarily means that they're going to become scarred for life.
The site does have its drawbacks, though. Being that the site is so huge, it pretty much contains the largest concentration of stupid on the internet. You really have to look around to find worthwhile thread topics and discussions here. Parents might be turned off by all the porn/gore trolls and cybersex, but I don't think that Gaia is really any more harmful for your children than any other online hangout or chatroom... unless they develop an unhealthy addiction to it, like many users obviously have.
It's also not the most friendly online community. There are many who will treat you like dirt just because you're not as rich in virtual currency, or haven't obtained as much expensive pixelated data as they have. It's pretty disgusting.
There are many problems regarding hacked accounts and "botted" gold. Many accounts have been unfairly banned, and the administrators/moderators are very unsympatheitc about it. I don't think it's very good business practice, since many of these people have given Gaia REAL money, which helps to keep the site running.
And finally, there are a lot of server issues. With all this money that they're pulling in from their users, I don't see why these issues have not yet been fixed...
That's my two cents... SN is Mr. Gerbik
By the way , I work as system planner , and I'll be in Citi Group .

See you .
Gaia is great. I can't wait to see how much more it grows. If all your 1337 kings want literate jerks running everywhere, make your own forum and stop whining about Gaia.
Username: Blood`Eternity if anyone wants to talk.
GO Gaia!! WOO!!
ps my user name is Dantess see if you can find me! :P
add me if you want
auntie sindy
thats my account
the last mimzy i can't wait to see that!
omg i can't believe ppl in the world will read this!
I have noticed gaia users are selling nude pics and and getting away with it. I had to go undercover just to report them and prove they are selling nude pics in their family friendly site.
I reported 2 gaia games chat rooms selling nude images and more pop-up after that.
Gaia is doing absolutely nothing about about this problem.
Gaia is letting kids look at online pornography, look at nude images, or cyber.
I guess child filters are useless when they can go onto gaia for pornography.
The problem is not that gaia has been "sold"
but the problem that almost all big corperations face, being a "Sell Out"
Gaia doesn't really care about the old members they just seem to care about getting new members and bringing in more money. Think about it who out of the age groups are on the internet the most? Teenagers and pre teens right? Gaia is trying to keep up with the oncomming internet users by making itself more 'appealing'
And ara_dragocaeles is my username and I've been on gaia since Jan of 2004.
I joined in '04 and I've loved it, all but the n00bs... I feel safe on Gaia, a lot safer then MySpace...Even if Gaia has let itself go a little.
But on topic, I think that they should improve stuff with the money, not change it.
Look me up! [(`The.Original`)]Moharii
(I used to be Moharii, but was banned for a reason beyond me...)
yeaaa.. i came in 04 too.. i got some presents from others that now cost bundles XD
The point is, nothing stays the same, so we have to learn to adapt and just...Keep doing what we're doing. Becuase if we dont, we'll all just give up. Becuase its only going to change more...
 XP :big:  T_T :gonk:  8) :whee: :cute:

The target age has gone from 18-ish down to 13. :/
I don't like it at all... but back in the old days, it was all good. :3
I'm not too in love with the new layout, but I'm sure they were just doing it to make Gaia users happy.
Personally, I'm just happy that they still have it running. Otherwise I'd be out of a lot of good friends that I've met through the site.
GAIAONLINE RULES.
But now, ever since Gaia became popular, it's very different. Basically it's like what happened to Neopets. 5 years ago Gaia had no sponsors or any of these crap movie trailer deals and whatever. Now it does. 5 years ago, newbies had to scrape for gold just to get something decent to wear besides the peasent clothes. Now Gaia is taking it easy on newbies by introducing them these "starter packs".
Oh yeah, and the General Discussion is now raided by a bunch of annoying teenage scene kids, who think Gaia is just like Myspace or whatever. The GD has basically become the second Chatterbox.
eh. I myself don't go on the forums anymore. I just stick to my guilds. They have some nice and actually intelligent people in these guilds, and lots of common things to talk about besides just stupid chatter.
Some forums have better people in them than others.
Don't just look at the GD and CB.
There are lots of active guilds that have good members too.
If you are careful though, it's a great place to be online. The number of adults and parents there isn't extreme, but it's usually enough to keep the perves at bay in the forums and such. It's private messaging and chat that parents need to look out for, just like anyplace else. Screen everybody on your kids' friends lists as best as you can. Log on as your kids sometime and see what Gaia is like for them.
Once the perves know that you could be masked as your kid, they leave you alone. Enough of that has happenned that perves mostly try to lure kids into chat now, though Gaia admins solved some of that by changing how rooms are named. Still, the filters for usernames should be improved as well as overall site security.
Most of it is written in php so some security measures can be installed without breaking the site, but from what I could see, Gaia was built in a kind of a patchwork way. So the whole thing will ultimately need a rewrite.
The most recent "scandal" in Gaia is a 2% points (gold) fee that has many up in arms. The vendors, especially vendors/buyers of Monthly Collectibles (formerly classed as "donation" items) were scapegoated as the cause for "inflation". The solution, according to the admins, was to penalize vendors for circulating points rather than spending them back into the game.
This is nothing new since Maplestory also charges fees for any kind of trading...but in Gaia, most seem oblivious to that fact, and that all exchanges in Gaia will likely have these fees in time. In the end, it may be a good way to get rid of excess points, but the smearing of the financially contributing members was a bad move.
So we don't know if Gaia will even survive the year because we don't know how the sponsors will be affected by Gaia becoming basically a lesser Maplestory or Neopets clone.
Some of us older members are sticking it out (though no longer pulling out our wallets to "donate") but some have left, and have taken their already rare items with them.
gotta hate the trolls/spammers though >.>
Fill it out and see your cash grow!

I enjoy the changes and having to get use to it over and over again
I am 24 I enjoy story writing in the threads with all kinds of people. I personally appreciate that there is a site like this Not geared towards small children.
There are allot of sites out there suited to a younger audience.
I think that old fogy Gaian's like my self need a place to enjoy our Fantasy star wars Rp's and what have you.
I enjoy Gaia very much and intend to play until it as long as I have an interest . No matter hoow old I get
Er, yeah, haven't bothered to seriously use Gaia in a year or so now, but everytime I pop by when I'm bored I leave shortly after. It just sucks.
Obvious liar is obvious.
