Yeah, my sister's a frequent user of Gaia Online. I frequented the forums a few times last year, but left because I just feel too old compared to the target audience (... and I'm only 22).
  • Tifa · 2 years ago
hello.. if your thinking that the target age was out of yours, get real.. there are people with the age of 47 in gaia so far.. Not because that are like child minded it is because the environment is like unbelievable unlike what your thinking...

For the record, www.big-boards.com also lists Gaia Online as the world's largest forum--so the claim is (sort of) independently verified. :)

oh lord,I was wondering why the new layout was so commertial and un-gaia like.
  • // · 2 years ago
It wasn't bought, because Lanzer's still running it, and I think he once said he doesn't intend to sell it for money.
I think the 8.93 M is refering to donations and sponsors.

The reason why there have been so many sponsors and advertisements is to help pay for the development of new features, just in case donations don't cut it. Without sponsors, the battle system probably wouldn't even be past sketching character designs.
  • david · 2 years ago
VC is a company that gives lones to small starting up new idea high risk companies pretty much
they buy a certain amount of the stock of the company for over the price it is worth so that if it ever dose hit big they sell the stock for bundles just like they previously did for ebay and myspace

so its not that lanzer sold gaia he just sold a portion of the future gain gaia will make
  • Anonymous · 3 years ago
Gaia also has plenty of undeclared income from "donations". They're in deep trouble if the IRS catches wind of that...

Gaia is becoming a very scary place. It's moved away from being a anime forum with frequent up dates to a very middle teen aged spam forum.
  • Homicidal Orange · 3 years ago
I'm Sickend By How Much Gaia Has Changed...I Joined Originally In 2003 And It's So Different Now!

I Wish It Would Change Back From A Teen Spam Center; As ph33r b0t Said.
  • MokieMorty, of Gaia online · 3 years ago
That really is... Heart breaking... It just won't be the same... They're probably going to drop the plot, and bring in Premium Gaia, and just ruin it... It'll never be the same... It's going down a slippery slope of no return.
I've made so many friends, and had so much fun on this site as a whole, but now everything's going to change. It's alreqady started, I guess... It's not the happy place it was... I knew something felt weird when I logged on the day the layout was changed.
  • David · 3 years ago
Agreed... I joined Gaia in 2004... I loved its second layout. And at first it was so much fun.

But now in placed like the Gaia Community Discussion forum they're running out of things to talk about, because the people have picked apart the entire site and discussed everything that can be discussed. And now the General Discussion has become a spambox full of "my first time having sex" and "how big is your penis?".

And the brand new layout makes Gaia seem like a MySpace/Neopets mix now... why'd they have to change? The last one was perfect...
  • Guest · 3 years ago
The creators of gaiaonline aparently couldn't handle the stress, and so they've signed it off under pressure. I knew eventually the creaotors would have to sign it away to someone with higher funds and such, but I never believed it'd be so soon. I believed I'd hit 25 before it was sold((ten years of original gaia)) but I was proven wrong yet again. In the end, we all have to come to these final aknowlegments... anyone being angry at gaia, is taking it too far... it was bound to happen, just a lot sooner than absolutely needed, but there had to be purpose behind it, and that's all I can say to this.*nods*
  • Pete Cashmore · 3 years ago
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the comments here, but this post discusses VC funding - not a sale. In other words: they've received $8.93 million to help Gaia Online grow.
  • Claire Voyant · 3 years ago
^ What he said, it states 'Gaia gets' Not "HAY LANZER AND ALL DEM R BEING SELL OUTsss Lolllzz" Eh, you can't keep that 'small forum/homy feeling' forever, especially with 3.5 million users, heck I remember when they were crapping their pants back at 500,000. Oh well, it's progress I suppose.
  • Toxic Juices · 3 years ago
Well, I don't know why you're going on about "Premium Gaia" and all that, This payment is obviously not paying gaia, but helping it to grow and STAY FREE, Though I don't see how a forum can grow much more, but hey... This says 3.5million users, now there's over 4million...
  • ~Insomnia_Forever~ · 3 years ago
Why whenever someone of reasonable intelligence wish to put down a spammer or even someone with differing opinion of their own MUST they mush it up by adding lolz and extra sss at the end of everything?! Jesus...not everyone is that...moronic, even those that *Gasp!* Have a different and thought out opinion other than your own.

But anyhow, I was imediately disappointed by their new layout...saying it looked like Neopets/MySpace was just right...Now it seems that change was because they sold Gaia....what a shame...Its like what happened at Neopets. I had joined the first year they started but just HAD to quit...
  • Fate Himitsuyama of Gaia onlin · 3 years ago
For all of you argueing about the layout.

There was even more whining about the last one when it came you.

    You'll get used to it.
  • Naturegirl · 3 years ago
Attention people! Gaia is NOT sold! xD It only got funding. Not to worry! No one bought out gaia! Lanzer reassures you in that. (I AM NOT LANZER. D: ) Check tha announcments at gaia!
  • Uni · 3 years ago
yesh...heaven forbid a site gets funding to keep itself alive.
Lanzer is still creator, admin, and owner of Gaia.
    it has not been "sold"
  • JetsuTH · 3 years ago
I've only been an official member of Gaia for 3 months, and its just fine. The layout shouldn't affect the way you post, right? I mean maybe its a little harder to get around, but you still get to do every thing you used to and more. My advice is use the links at the bottom of the screen. Look me up.

    Jetsu, outs.
  • Taree · 3 years ago
Yeah, I liked the second layout the best. It was by far my favorite. I wish they'd bring that layout back. I've been a member since jan of '04, and Gaia has changed dramatically since I've been a part of the scene. I wish they could do something to fix Gaia. Even though they were trying their best to make the Gaians happy
  • Sonnie · 3 years ago
I love Gaia Online and don't find the layout that difficult to navigate. It's usually not easy to change from one virtual world to another, so I can relate to the complaints of the original Gaia members. I will mention if any of you older users want to unload your "older" items. . .email me at csrs_2006@yahoo.com

  • LF · 2 years ago
I think it depends on their age and how mature they are.

I would suggest they stay away from the General Discussion forum and the Chatterbox, and they should be alright. There's always people who talk about sexual topics and the like in the GD(although it shouldn't be allowed, but it might take a few minutes before the topic is removed or deleted), and there's always people in the CB looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend.
  • Chase · 3 years ago
I've been on since 2004, and I loved the 2nd last layout, it's become way too 'modern' and commercialised. And the amount of annoying people who enjoy spamming what was one a really respectable website where people had intellectual conversations is atrocious.

    The Chatterbox is everywhere now..
  • Kiki · 3 years ago

I have been on GaiaOnline since it was first go-gaia.com back in 2003. Granted, there have been a lot of changes, but there is a niche there for everyone. There are ways to seek out your own age group (which kind of sucks, considering it is mostly just typing out your words). There are new mini-games, new items and new ways to connect to a world full of people.

As far as the "hacking", there is no system out there that is fool proof, however, unless you have a simple 1234 password or a deceitful friend you told you password to, the site is pretty secure. A good portion of those so-called "hackings" (defined as your account is infiltrated and they take away all of your hard-earned gold and items) are done mostly because people share their sacred password with others- unfortunately, this is something Gaia cannot control. They can warn users of the dangers of such, but what happens on the other side of the computer is not entirely their buisness. They do take the actions to repremand those who do break this real-time law.

It is not ALL true that Gaia is filled with people looking for others to cyber. If people read the ToS (Terms of Service), they would see that this is not allowed. The moderators of GaiaOnline are there on a volunteer basis, and there are actually not enough, in my opinion, to get the job done. There is only so much they can do if they have real-life adult responsabilities, which users forget their lives do not completely revolve around Gaia.

The biggest problem they face is trying to weed out the baddins from the people who don't know any better and just clicked "I Accept" on the first read-me page. It can be a laughable experience just cruising through from thread to thread and see what kind of people are actually out there.

  • Mr. Kenny · 3 years ago
I've been a user since 2003, and I've evolved with the site as best as I could. I've always supported the admins in their decisions.

People need to realize it's a very symbiotic relationship.
We need the admins just as much as they need us.

Also, the admins, Lanzer and such, have changed the site mainly utilizing suggestions by the users themselves. There are always going to be people who like it, and people who don't. If everyone just loved everything all the time, it'd be a boring place. We strive on controversy, so I say let people think what they will. Put up your point of view and share it. It doesn't have to be an arguement of back and forth "no, you're a newb!" It can generally be settled with intelligent conversation. Even if you don't leave with the same ideas/opinions, you got them out.

In any case. Gaia's great. They will always have my support through monthly donations, as well as on the site with what I type out daily.

    -Mr. Kenny
  • Spazmatron · 3 years ago
I have been a member of Gaia Online officially for almost 2 years, so early 2005, possibly late 2004, I can't remember exactly. But my new account, the one I plan to stay on, was created this April. The layout change didn't bother me, and I actually think it did the site some good.

The site now looks cleaner and in my opinion is a lot easier to use. Gaia has not sold out, it has received FUNDING, which all large sites and forums will of course need at some point, to keep them lag-free and to help with maintenance. People just need to get over it.

If it weren't for the admins and their choices and decisions, there would be NO Gaia, would you prefer that? Something tells me you wouldn't.

And to the person asking if Gaia is safe, it is as safe as any forum online, and there are a lot of moderators, admins and helpers trying to keep it clean. Just keep an eye on your kids and make sure they know not to give out their details online ^^

Gaia is pretty cool so far. I've only joined it a month ago and I love it.. although the gold making process is kinda slow. I would love to have some help instead of having to "donate" to Gaia. 1 thing I like about the new gaia is their new newbies tutorial. What a wonderful idea!! I remember I registered another account 2 years back and I had no idea what was going on.. but they have a new system now so *thumbs up*. Yah, keep up the good work Gaia!

i use to love GAIA until they had wrongfully banned me accused me of botting (using a gold generator to make gold) – nothing I said or do matters – once their decision is made up – it’s made up – I asked so show proof – I got an attitude back instead of proof – when I had asked if I can proof to them that I had made the gold by my own hands – they refused – all my time invested – was a waste – customer service is horrible – I had just donated $50 and got banned the following week – they refused to give me my money back – it would not surprise me if they go under – they should – they have horrible customer service – and who ever does the research on my file were very inexperience with an attitude on top of it – no more donation coming from me nor any of my cousins that’s for sure
  • Marissa · 2 years ago
Gaia is a TERRIBLE place for kids. There are constant porn trolls featuring hentai images, gay porn, and even lolicon (drawn images featuring small children engaged in sex acts).

I don't think seeing boobies messes kids up, but some of that stuff is gross even to me.

The worst part is, they aren't DOING anything about it. They aren't even trying. These boards will stay up for quite some time, and even when one is gone, another pops up.
  • [.Ramen.] · 2 years ago
Please don't suggest the moderators don't try.
There's only a handful of them, versus thousands of users who need asistance.

While yes, some threads aren't acted upon instantly, sometimes threads are locked so fast that you can't even get into them seconds after they're created.

And, as a reminder, Gaia is supposed to be for teens and up, so kids shouldn't even be on the site, even though they are. It's not gaia's responsibility to make the website appropriate for fifth graders, because if a fifth grader is on the site without parental permission, they're breaking the ToS, and if they're on the site with permission, then that's the parents' problem, because they were the ones who gave the okay, right?

To be honest, you're probably just unlucky and clicking on the wrong threads. Most forums aren't filled with spam and R-rated material.
    except maybe the ones CB.

and most of the violent/explicit threads were made by the youngest members of Gaia, if you think about it. It's not gaia's fault, it's just the way they are. Most of the kids on gaia that I've known tend to get nicer and more mature as time goes on. It's not like being exposed to bad threads necessarily means that they're going to become scarred for life.

Gaia Online is crack. I signed up September '06, and I'm completely addicted. Just as the article said, it has a lot to offer: Forums, chatrooms, mini games, and the upcoming battle system which will give it even more of an RPG element.

The site does have its drawbacks, though. Being that the site is so huge, it pretty much contains the largest concentration of stupid on the internet. You really have to look around to find worthwhile thread topics and discussions here. Parents might be turned off by all the porn/gore trolls and cybersex, but I don't think that Gaia is really any more harmful for your children than any other online hangout or chatroom... unless they develop an unhealthy addiction to it, like many users obviously have.

It's also not the most friendly online community. There are many who will treat you like dirt just because you're not as rich in virtual currency, or haven't obtained as much expensive pixelated data as they have. It's pretty disgusting.

There are many problems regarding hacked accounts and "botted" gold. Many accounts have been unfairly banned, and the administrators/moderators are very unsympatheitc about it. I don't think it's very good business practice, since many of these people have given Gaia REAL money, which helps to keep the site running.

And finally, there are a lot of server issues. With all this money that they're pulling in from their users, I don't see why these issues have not yet been fixed...

That's my two cents... SN is Mr. Gerbik

They told me it could have been because I have accepted money from someone with botted gold to buy my items, how am I supposed to know who has it? I am 22 years old and I joined Gaia back when it was gogaia.com. Sometimes it can get overwhelming and people can be extremely rude without realizing it. I think it teaches alot to young people about the responsiblities of life (owning a minishop teaches good management skills.) Some people (yes even adults) feel like they just cant fit in in the real world. Most of my friends are younger than me and are online. Without Gaia I would be increasingly bored and would find it hard to have an actual outlet for my art to really get my name out there. There are so many ways to earn gold other than botting. (Botting is for lazy people who dont have any drive or talent whatsoever.) One complaint I have however is that people are overpricing alot of their services on gaia (c'mon... 200k for a headshot?! No one's art is worth THAT much.)Anyway... I love Gaia.. and I hope to stay with it for a very long time.. even if someday it becomes a Paid site.
  • IxIthedustkeeperIxI · 2 years ago
Another note. Try not to donate to random people... Donate only to people you actually know. If you donate to random people they'll tell their friends that you're a good person to get gold from... and then they'll start asking for 24k at a time and begging for your items.

I hate how much Gaia has changed. It is now overrun with 12 year olds when originally everyone was at least 16. I joined in Jan. '04 and it was so much more fun. I'm starting to hate Gaia. They've made it for children when it should be 16 and up. STUPID STUPID GAIA

Gaiaonline is suppose to be for everyone (family friendly) but they seem to be supporting the sex and porn industries.

I have noticed gaia users are selling nude pics and and getting away with it. I had to go undercover just to report them and prove they are selling nude pics in their family friendly site.

I reported 2 gaia games chat rooms selling nude images and more pop-up after that.

Gaia is doing absolutely nothing about about this problem.

Gaia is letting kids look at online pornography, look at nude images, or cyber.

I guess child filters are useless when they can go onto gaia for pornography.
  • Kassy (gun_girl) · 2 years ago
I've been on Gaia for two years and I only use it for the art part of gaia but I do remember the days when the layout was old and everything personaly the layout is not the problem
The problem is not that gaia has been "sold"
but the problem that almost all big corperations face, being a "Sell Out"
Gaia doesn't really care about the old members they just seem to care about getting new members and bringing in more money. Think about it who out of the age groups are on the internet the most? Teenagers and pre teens right? Gaia is trying to keep up with the oncomming internet users by making itself more 'appealing'

  • ara_dragocaeles · 2 years ago
I'm another gaian veteran, from the ages of go-gaia.com. Honestly, I feel that part of the problems is that gaian mods have too much to handle and there aren't enough of them. I usually stay in ED where the users tend to regulate themselves, but even there there has been a tremendous deteriotion in quality and that, I feel, is in part due to the lack of moderator presence. In the old days, reported threads disappeared within seconds. Underage materials got kicked off and I saw several moderators even posting in threads every now and then. I recently came back to gaia after a year or two off and in that time, I haven't seen a moderator in any ED thread. Its sad how things are changing.

And ara_dragocaeles is my username and I've been on gaia since Jan of 2004.

I love Gaia to death, but sometimes I wished there was an intelligence test before people could join, like on KoL where you have to take a literacy quiz before you can use the forum section.

I joined in '04 and I've loved it, all but the n00bs... I feel safe on Gaia, a lot safer then MySpace...Even if Gaia has let itself go a little.

But on topic, I think that they should improve stuff with the money, not change it.

Hey Im clickmyname from gaiaonline. I remember joining back in 04. Yeah it was great. But people, what you got to understand is NOTHING stays the same. Everything takes its course in changing. Look at SKATEBOARDING for example. It started out as surfboards on wheels. And people LOVED it. It wasnt globablized, no merchandize for it, no advertisement and brandname "Skateboard" shit. Just fun. Look at it now. Little boards, new modern shapes, and unfortunutely "trends" have been made from it.
The point is, nothing stays the same, so we have to learn to adapt and just...Keep doing what we're doing. Becuase if we dont, we'll all just give up. Becuase its only going to change more...

It is a good site. To all those moaning about 10 year olds, recently anyone under 13 has been kicked off the site.

Suck it up people, you're a bunch of internet snobs. It isn't as bad as you know.
  • Reesa · 2 years ago
It's a really cool site! Much better than Neopets. That just went downhill, too many advertisements. Gaia has a few ads too, but not nearly as much as Neopets does. There's new content being added, and improvements being made. You can really create an unique avatar, thanks to all the different items, clothing, and hairstyles you can choose from. There's lots of different forums, so it's hard to not find something that would interest you. If you're older than 22, it can be a bit annoying, to run into users, who sometimes pair bad spelling with l33+ speak, or txt talk. It doesn't take away from the fun tho. Parents should be advised to read the TOS themselves,so they can better explain it to their children, if they let them on the site. Also to go over what they should do if they come across improper behavior.
  • MrsMeow · 2 years ago
GAIA should be shut down. Its just full of 11 - 14 year old internet "whores" and paedophiles. Everyone talks to each other in such a sexual manner, even though its targeted at young people. Also "rape" is used alot within that community, its seen as cool.

I left a few months ago when little 15 year olds from Canada TRIED to steal my long term boyfriend by making upsex chats etc, causing all havoc within my personal relationship.

I'm glad they're getting funding, otherwise we would have to pay to be on it. All those servers and stuff have to add up to quite a pretty penny.

I'm not too in love with the new layout, but I'm sure they were just doing it to make Gaia users happy.
Personally, I'm just happy that they still have it running. Otherwise I'd be out of a lot of good friends that I've met through the site.
    GAIAONLINE RULES.
  • Robin P · 2 years ago
Gaia sucks real bad. It's a place to cyber sex and full of dorks. It's not mainstream at all. Those stupid anime characters will never appeal to 90 percent of teens. Whoever invested in them is an idiot.
  • Oryo Prime · 2 years ago
Its not a teen based site. Its for kids not teens. So why target teens?
  • Jess · 1 year ago
@ Robin P -- the avatars have an anime look because 5 years ago, Gaia used to be a community for anime fans. It was actually nice back then and the people were nice. The General Discussion forum had some nice topics. There weren't much hackers, scammers, or stupid n00bs either. We had the nice newbies and people who actually wanted to help out newbies.

But now, ever since Gaia became popular, it's very different. Basically it's like what happened to Neopets. 5 years ago Gaia had no sponsors or any of these crap movie trailer deals and whatever. Now it does. 5 years ago, newbies had to scrape for gold just to get something decent to wear besides the peasent clothes. Now Gaia is taking it easy on newbies by introducing them these "starter packs".

Oh yeah, and the General Discussion is now raided by a bunch of annoying teenage scene kids, who think Gaia is just like Myspace or whatever. The GD has basically become the second Chatterbox.

eh. I myself don't go on the forums anymore. I just stick to my guilds. They have some nice and actually intelligent people in these guilds, and lots of common things to talk about besides just stupid chatter.
  • Suzanne · 2 years ago

Gai is much different than it used to be, but if you find the right places it's really great.
Some forums have better people in them than others.
Don't just look at the GD and CB.
There are lots of active guilds that have good members too.
  • Angry · 2 years ago
Gaia sucks. The games are alright, but the admins are shit and ban people for stupid shit they have no control over. The place is swarming with pedophiles and children looking for pedophiles. Its a pretty sick place and I can see it getting shut down.
  • Kthulah · 2 years ago
I've been a member of Gaia for a few months now, and I also got my daughter to sign up. Those who say it can be a scary place are correct, but then so is every youth oriented site on the net that doesn't require some kind of real life verification. So parents should be aware just like any other site.

If you are careful though, it's a great place to be online. The number of adults and parents there isn't extreme, but it's usually enough to keep the perves at bay in the forums and such. It's private messaging and chat that parents need to look out for, just like anyplace else. Screen everybody on your kids' friends lists as best as you can. Log on as your kids sometime and see what Gaia is like for them.

Once the perves know that you could be masked as your kid, they leave you alone. Enough of that has happenned that perves mostly try to lure kids into chat now, though Gaia admins solved some of that by changing how rooms are named. Still, the filters for usernames should be improved as well as overall site security.

Most of it is written in php so some security measures can be installed without breaking the site, but from what I could see, Gaia was built in a kind of a patchwork way. So the whole thing will ultimately need a rewrite.

The most recent "scandal" in Gaia is a 2% points (gold) fee that has many up in arms. The vendors, especially vendors/buyers of Monthly Collectibles (formerly classed as "donation" items) were scapegoated as the cause for "inflation". The solution, according to the admins, was to penalize vendors for circulating points rather than spending them back into the game.

This is nothing new since Maplestory also charges fees for any kind of trading...but in Gaia, most seem oblivious to that fact, and that all exchanges in Gaia will likely have these fees in time. In the end, it may be a good way to get rid of excess points, but the smearing of the financially contributing members was a bad move.

So we don't know if Gaia will even survive the year because we don't know how the sponsors will be affected by Gaia becoming basically a lesser Maplestory or Neopets clone.

Some of us older members are sticking it out (though no longer pulling out our wallets to "donate") but some have left, and have taken their already rare items with them.

Gaia has changed a lot just since I joined (jan. 2007) and while a lot of things may take some getting used to it doesn't mean that they were all necessarily bad. Of course with a site growing so fast things are going to change. I love gaia and probably spend too much time on there, and I will continue to as long as I enjoy it and have fun. If you don't like it anymore leave, it's as simple as that.

Many features are broken and have been for a while. This includes inventory, gifting, no filtering for bad language, fishing, word bump and towns and don't get me started on the cybering. Then there is the fact that in July Gaia rolled out some bad code that caused a games item glitch. Hundreds of users were banned and two months later can still not use trades or the market. It was not the fault of the users yet Gaia has left them to rot as the forgotten ones while they are busy adding more ads and sponsor items. Not the site it was even 1 year ago and not a place to let your kids be on with the lack of language control and rampant cybering.

I joined Gaia back in 'o4 and can honestly say it has gone way down hill. It's extremely commercialised now, even more so than Neopets is. Those who AREN'T complaining about the layout clearly weren't around in the old days when everything was so much better. It's basically been taken over by n00bs that infest the place now.

Er, yeah, haven't bothered to seriously use Gaia in a year or so now, but everytime I pop by when I'm bored I leave shortly after. It just sucks.

I am a Gaia member, my entire family including nieces and nephews enjoy playing on Gaia. However lately they have resorted to some practices that is unsavory. They have gone on a banning spree. Some of the reasons are not capital offenses. And worst is why are they doing this to members who are paying (as in real money) customers. Aren't they in the business of making a profit? And when you try to work it out with them, there number one response is "open a new account". But the worst offense is when they ban account with real money in them and then refuse to give a refund or transfer the money to the new account. I am starting to suspect that the ban spree is to falsely boost up membership. That's how they got Verizon Wireless to back them up recently. Or an elaborate scam. Because if you start all over again, you find the need to invest more money to get to the level you were before the banning. Regardless of their motive it's bad customer service and something must be done. I can't imagine how much money they have kept from unsuspecting "13" year old's. Potential members/gamers BEWARE.
