Not surprising â€“ this has actually been a feature of the Better YouTube Firefox extension for a long while, a rather popular one with the Firefox crowd. It's only natural that YouTube would look to the most popular open-source improvements of their service and, um, "close-source" them and make their own version to use straight on YouTube.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course, since it's clearly informed by a user need. So good for them, I guess. In fact, it shouldn't have taken them that long to come up with in the first place.

Timothy: Yep, that could be it...would make sense..capitalizing on the opportunity.

After viewing YouTube on and off for awhile..why would anyone WANT to download most of this stuff? It's poor quality, grainy amateur stuff for the most part.

I wouldn't be suprized if this was due to the fact that Google recently announced the end of Google Video, which has a download feature (which rocks).

They compress the video quite a lot at youtube, I'm guessing they are going to increase the quality for downloads...

Seems that youtube may be finally responding to conscientious protesters like PwnYouTube. If the protest over fair use doesn't sway them, which is unlikely, then the business reality that a youtube download is never more than 4 keystrokes away from anyone using any browser or platom eventually will.

(FYI, 3 keystrokes: When you view any youtube video on youtube.com, type 'PWN' (3 keys) in front of 'youtube' and hit Enter (4th key).

Thanks a lot for the information. That is good if You tube is doing that. As you said there are lots of freewares (recently I saw one in my digit CD also) that dowload You Tube video on the computer. Some you Tube videos are really good and helpful. - Internet Techies

@Kody K - agreed. Vimeo, yes. In fact, there is an initial internet high that is still prevailing - remember your first acid trip... thought this was going to change the world... but what isn't changing in v/t is quality. Everything duplicates like fractal iterations on steroids... gadgetry and whizz-bang goes forth and multiplies... but quality is grinding to a halt. Prove me wrong.

um...it's definitely already offered elsewhere on the site. However, as one user earlier stated, the videos are so compressed that the quality is very poor.

Not really a big deal. There are several methods to download youtube videos already.

I'm surprised they haven't released a download feature sooner though.

@Glenn Batuyong - Not everyone digs Podcasts... I guess if you're on a Mac you might... but honestly, Itunes on PC is pretty lame. There's just far better things on a PC to listen to audio with... heck, I'd take WMP over it.

Other's already pointed it out but Youtube is a little too late, there's multiple ways to download a video... if you really want to Rickroll yourself that much.
