Anything that has killer succeeding it, will not be killed (in the majority of cases). Take for example, the most common - iPhone. all these phones are dubbed as an iPhone killer yet the 'killer' at the end has already claimed the popularity of the service or product in question.

People immitate, it's what they do. If Google build it better and more user friendly, then it may have a shot. However, wikipedia is known, it's user built and has the loyalty of those users to keep it strong, therefore I doubt Google will kill Wikipedia.

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

Indeed. Even if these articles are not true, the damage had been done

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

I can conclude that Knol has definetely has failed in its mission to be the new Wikipedia. There are just to many negative news articles about them to make it a succesfull Wikipedia Killer!

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

I just Googled "Google knol" and the first site that popped up was a wikipedia page describing Google knol...

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

The name Google Knol just blows chunks.

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

Only Time will tell whether Google manages to kill Wikipedia or not. One thing is for sure is Google is in best position possible to do just that. As you mention in the post : 50% of Wikipedia Traffic comes from Google.

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

The content determine how popular the material will be. The relevant question then is, where is the Knols' content coming from?

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

True, it would be absolutely horrible if knols are given special priority over other web content. I don't see any evidence for that yet though.

If Google just treats knols like general web content with the main difference being an author and higher Adsense revenue then I don't see any reason why Wikipedia would get hurt. They should automatically get ranked high if the quality of the content is excellent.

Someone at Google should clarify that soon.

(this doesn't let me log in :( )

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

They are slightly separate in how they work (or at least, as described by Google), but the end game seems the same - have an authoritative site about as many topics as possible. And with Wikipedia depending so much on Google searches to drive traffic, there could be major consequences if Google gives priority to Knol pages in search results.

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

hmm.. seems like I'm banned or something...

Knols is not even aimed at Wikipedia. With one author for one topic, there is no way they can even reach the size of Wikipedia at anytime soon.

I can see how Mahalo.com or About.com may be in trouble but I don't understand why anyone is comparing knols with Wikipedia. They are COMPLETELY different animals.

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

Google Knol is a Wikipedia killer just like Google Checkout was a PayPal killer and Gdocs was a MSFT Office Killer...oh wait...

Re: The Daily Poll: Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Killer?

We, the people of the Internet, will champion Wikipedia!
