I discovered a new website called Youshook.com last month and was hooked listening to songs I never heard anywhere else. It also plays jokes that remind me of Dr. Demento. Trying to find out about this new site. Anyone know?

I personally love the voting system of http://www.thesixtyone.com, where I get to discover new artists, many of which have free downloadable tracks.

If I lived in the U.S. I would use Pandora.

I COMPLETELY disagree with this post.

Musicovery runs slow as shit and its recommendation engine is as smart as a dead tree.

Last.fm has next to no music on the service so I've never found a reason to use it. It might recommend new music but then you gotta go find that music on torrents or YouTube. I know some pple who like it though so I don't think Last.fm can be completely written off.

iTunes Genius doesn't actually recommend new music. It just makes automatic playlists. That's great but isn't the point of recommending music to discover new music? I'm probably missing the point of 'recommendation' compared to 'discovery' but in my mind they are synonymous.

I haven't tried iLike or MyStrands and I will make a point to do so. But I stay on top of internet music services for the most part and unless these are two brand new services, I don't think they will be any good cuz they haven't gotten a significant amount of press/blog coverage and I've never heard of them before. If they are good, people would be talking about them.

Where is Pandora?

Where is Slacker?

Where is thesixtyone?

Each of these 3 services are light years ahead of any of the services mentioned in this post. I would HIGHLY recommend you check them out if you haven't already. Ya, Pandora doesn't allow you to see what's up next but isn't that the beauty of radio? Also, if you want to be more in control of what's coming up next, check out the Fine Tuning features in Slacker. They allow you to control very specific details about what kind of music you want to hear. I am quite surprised that more people don't know about it.

I feel that this list is definitely for people with their own music library on their computer. I don't own music so I guess I shouldn't even be commenting on this post but seriously, Musicovery?!? Try using it for a few days and then get back to me on how much hair you ripped out of your skull due to frustration.

I don't have difficulties with Last.fm so I will continue to recommend it. I find their forum invaluable for technical assistance. I love the scrobbling feature more than any other feature. I also enjoy the customized radio station the site creates for me based on my listening habits.

website today, and use almost every day, is Blip.fm - It is IMO the best social
music site on the web.

It also 'tweets' the comment you leave while playing a track to Twitter if you
wish, and use @ replies to communicate with other listeners. Awesome.

Please STOP RECOMMENDING LAST.FM UNTIL THEY FIX THEIR DAMN SITE!!!! Their site is unusable for a large percentage of people because of errors that last.fm ignores. 100% worthless for me and everyone else I know between the player that doesn't work and the disappearing settings. So why do sites like this keep recommending it since it sucks for so many users? LAST.FM IS CRAP.

The "oops: error connecting" message that has persisted for years, with no fix. Google it and you'll see.

This- social music discovery and sharing - is what will continue to marginalize the importance of radio and the stranglehold of big media. Let's just hope that these sites stay as neutral as possible and don't get snapped up and manipulated as well.

I especially like the Radio feature - it beats Last.fm by being able to choose to listen to (say) Alt, Pop, Rock & Techno all on the same station, rather than just one genre - and limit the years it scrobbles from.

Audio quality is good, too.

I was a fan of Pandora but grew tired of the repetition and tangents that it would take me on (which I didn't want).

I recently found Slacker (http://www.slacker.com) and think they do a pretty amazing job. You pick the artists and the songs to start. You can Fine Tune based on Year, Popularity, how much Music Discovery and how often you want your favorited songs to play.

The matches are pretty spot on and I find myself listening for hours a day. I've discovered a ton of great new music (and heard some old favorites). Also, not much repetition, especially compared to Pandora or others.

Adam, music discovery/recommendation are pretty similar, so I doubt the list would change much (expect iTunes might get bumped for Pandora). The list would be drastically different if we compared song selection, streaming quality, and other factors that make some other music sites great.
