To know if a link is genuine, I check the domain name. If that's OK, I assume the link is. This bit of social engineering completely defeats my test. (Black) hats off to the clever social engineer who thought of it, and kudos to Mashable for bringing it to our attention.

@Hugh - I don't think it's misleading at all, actually. I think that there's a serious flaw in the wired.com site that allows the hoaxer to pull this off. Wired is culpable, intentionally or not, in my opinion. They need to fix their site so that things like this can't be pulled off.
