Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/08/20/facebook-email/

Tribe.net and Flickr are to sites I know of that send the full content of messages to your regular e-mail, not just a notification that you have e-mail.

I'm interested to see how this will work. I suspect some users, like me, are already set up in gmail or Outlook or whatever and will resist all of Facebook's efforts to bring their email "in-house." Others who maybe aren't so entrenched in their various systems may be more likely to just let Facebook have everything. I'd really like to see some studies though, to see what % of users utilize facebook's applications. I'd also like to see if there's a link between getting older and decreased time spent on Facebook (that's what's happened to me, at least). Any thoughts?

Actually, Flickr shows the full message in the email they send you when you get a flickrmail. They also provide full feeds for nearly everything.

Just another reason why I should delete my facebook.

doh' Nick beat me to it =) should'a read his comment.
  • Mark · 2 years ago
Actually, Pete, the email sent shows the full message, and replies can be sent directly from email back to Facebook. :-)
  • Pete · 2 years ago
    Really? Taking another look.
  • dep · 2 years ago
yeah, hopefully they'll display the entire email in your inbox instead of just a notification like Tribe (and some others) does (do).
  • gettit · 2 years ago
That email issue is what I think is probably the lamest thing about any social network. Nice to see that about Tribe.net and Flickr, but I would think people would want to actually receive their email in their normal inbox even more than they want some open standard for moving around the services. I just rarely hear about it, so nice to see here.

Is facebook ever going to upgrade their UI? Half the time I can't figure out where to go to get my messages after logging in in response to the annoying spamlets facebook sends. I can't imagine the pain of going there to get my *real* email, too.

Sorry facebook, you can take my pride, but you'll never take my freedom!

I'm with Daniel: counting reasons to kill my facebook account.

this is still not "open." this is facebook wanting to build a wall around another part of your online life. they want to own you.

i saw a new site the other day -- http://readr.com -- and it makes a lot more sense to me.

I don't know why, but I really hope it'll fail.

I accidentally ended up on an interesting page on Facebook today. I can't find any direct link to it, but it allows you to create lists of friends. You can then send messages to these lists, which could be handy.

    The page is:

    http://www.facebook.com/friends/

I'd be interested to know if there is any actually link to this page, or if it is a hidden (at the moment) feature.
  • Kaerast · 2 years ago
That link just redirects to /friends.php, the normal list of your friends.

Ecademy (www.ecademy.com) also sends you the full text of messages if you are a Power Networker. I would be willing to pay a subscription fee to Facebook to get the content of the messages in the notification mail.

I am really not a fan of facebook

If someone sends me a mail from Facebook and I have to have that email address in Facebook's database... and have to receive Spam from Facebook with their applications etc. I'm going to be really upset. Honestly, I'm not a fan of their underground methods of collecting data and (probably) selling it to the highest bidder. They're doing this in a sneaky way, and I'm not happy to support them. If I could, I would delete my account, but we all know that you never really 'delete' your account on Facebook, it just goes into a database where they keep your info and wait for you to come back.

I don’t think this is really a big deal. How would you feel if an email sent through Facebook all of a sudden gets into your email account inbox? That’s alarming right? So when an email from Facebook reminds you that you an email at Facebook, don’t be furious. Facebook is just after your security.

There's a bit of a workaround to this limitation. If you use the text messaging and subscribe features that let you get certain things by text (at least in 160-character chunks, which you'd have to press N and send to get more of), you can respond to them by text as well. This allows me to respond to most of my mail via text, without going onto the site! (I read the full mail on my Palm's mail app, then respond to the matching text message.)

    Hello facebook team
I have a problem for a few months already. I can't use my chat at all. It's appearing that I don’t online while I am. When I try to talk with someone of my friends it shows like he doesn’t online anymore, while he does. Please help me to sole it. I tried to contact you so many times for so long.
    Hope to hear from you
    With thanks
    sivan
