Who is usually the worst about spending their money? Young people.

High school and college age young people to be exact. Who are Facebook's main users?

Where does Facebook's value come from? Advertisements for products aimed at young people? Yu don't say...

Re: Ballmer Comments on Facebook

A year or two ago, someone astutely observed that microsoft undervalued users in general and community in particular when valuing potential acquisitions.

Apparently they still do. Microsoft still seems to believe that they can leverage their monopoly position into significant marketshare in a new area. I think this is increacingly and demonstrably untrue. The only clear advantage their monopoly gives them is that it still generates significant amounts of profit that can be use to bankroll new businesses until they finally manage to become viable.

Re: Ballmer Comments on Facebook

Isn't it kinda odd for Steve B. to make such a comment considering MS has just invested $500m into FB?

Re: Ballmer Comments on Facebook

I agree with Ballmer (thought I'd never say that)... Facebook is overrated. Sure it's a great concept and was very well executed... but I dont see how anyone can consider this website "revolutionary". It's another social network with a mask on and some cool new features on the side of it. But really, nothing on this website is particularly out of the ordinary compared to other social networks. EXCEPT for it's application API, which has NOT impressed me yet (but oh it has so much potential). The only thing it's brought me is daily messages about a superpoke, or becoming a zombie, or playing tetris with my friends. And to be quite honest; I hate that.

Re: Ballmer Comments on Facebook

I tend to agree with what Ballmer said: anything associated with young people are faddish. Besides, most of these thing do not have deep technologies.

I come accross a site www.mygrowup.com. This site try to escape from young population and want to stay in the field for a person's whole life. I think they got the idea right.

Re: Ballmer Comments on Facebook

IMO, facebook is invaluable as free advertising. The user count is the only reason I build on the facebook platform... it gets users to my real site/application.

Re: Ballmer Comments on Facebook

The value is in the users. Typical Microsoft Moron, assessing the value of a WEBSITE by the complexity of the software. That's like saying the value of Windows is software, which is totally untrue, ubuntu is more powerful than any Microsoft product and costs nothing. The real value of Windows is the userbase that mindlessly keeps shelling out everytime a new version of windows is released.

Facebook is just a typical social network running on stolen ConnectU code. But they have strong ties with every university, which is something that's not going to happen again. If MS came along with a new social network, colleges would not switch over. The monopoly facebook has is why the price is so high. You could have the most powerful software in the universe, but without users it's worthless.

Re: Ballmer Comments on Facebook

Myspace is still on top... not sure if anyone noticed. Just because we talk about facebook more on our blogs doesn't mean they're the leader.

I agree on the 10 billion evaluation. Facebook users aren't any more likely to purchase something than anyone else, so where does the value come from?

In addition, the site just plain isn't good. The development platform is horrible, and the site is confusing to use. It feels extremely limited to use, imo. The only reason it's gaining popularity is because of the friend factor.

"Join this site, I'm on it!"

That's all I really have to say about that. :)
