I really think www.30boxes.com is the social network web-app. Its a killer calendar tool that helps you keep up with your friends and family without being too intrusive. I can't live without it.

I would like to nominate SWAPASKILL.COM. Its an online community enabling you to register your own skill or expertise and meet local people who have the skills you need. When you have built friendship and trust, you can do each other a favour by exchanging skills.

Only launched in the UK this week, due to launch in the States in the New Year and still in its very early stages with a few teething problems, but a really cool idea and attracting a lot of national media interest. It also has new technology built into it which enables you to open multiple windows and move them around your screen so you can look at numerous profiles at the same time. Haven't seen another matching site that can do this. This is currently available on Mozilla and will be very soon on IE.

Take a look at the STORY OF THE MONTH on the front page to get an idea of how skill swapping works.

Well, I think what makes the sites mentioned above unique is that they bring something new to the space - and usually in a different vertical. I like FanNation's focus on sports delivery and games - and would like to see others nominated that address a real niche - and not just a MySpace/Facebook wannabe.

In the add-ons category... let me present DashNote. We use the annotation metaphor (e.g. sticky notes) to enable a whole new approach to communication and collaboration.

Users of social networks can store and exchange information in a visual manner that is substantially richer than bookmarks. For example:

All of this is deployed through a bookmarklet, so with a lazy extension of your forefinger and two gentle clicks, you're all set.

I would like to nominate MOG.com! Its a new online community for music enthusiasts that was launched in June '06 and its an awesome social networking tool. There blogging format supports posting of videos and pictures and the Mog-o-Matic (software that you download) searches your library and the library of everyone else so you can check out and listen to a clip what everyone's listening to. Recently there have been some actual artists who have joined mog and [unlike other networks] maintain their own mog pages. Its definitely and awesome site and you all should check it out at www.mog.com!

Just a small correction pete; MySpace, YouTube and Facebook did not start this year. Most social networks now starting are focused on specific niches, while the former appeals more to the crowds. It would be difficult to compare Bebo with a niche application developed in 2006.
