Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/01/29/google-barcode-ads/

I don't really see bar code ads taking off in this country any time soon. Short codes are much easier to implement and already have a head start. While they don't have all the benefits of the bar codes, obviously, I think the ease of use of short codes outweigh what the bar codes can do.

There's a piece of software for your UNLOCKED iPhone that does this very magically--you just point the camera at the barcode and it decodes it--it's amazing. I cannot wait for 2-D barcodes to appear EVERYWHERE--I love them!

If anyone can pull this off, it's Google. But let's not forget the late-90s disaster that was the CueCat.

I thought I was the only one that remembered the CueCat! There is one major difference between the 'Cat and this new technology though: Cell phones are mobil, the CueCat was leashed to the PS/2-port...

Could the CueCat have been ten years too early? :D

This has been on newspaper ads in Canada for several months now, if not near a year..

This is pre-installed on my Nokia N95

you can make them from the nokia site too, here is one i made
    http://www.surfbuddy.com/qr.png

Plus you can do URL's and emails and up to 60 char text messages. The above is a 60 char message.

They would be really good in newspapers and magazines when you want to note down details from stories.

Installed on every phone, good chance of taking off in Europe.

Telldodo presents an alternative to print barcodes: keywords that are easy to remember and easy to type in. Just enter the simple key-phrase at telldodo.com and get back the original URL, however complicated it may be. For example: “light saber toy”

The secret is to get this to ship with the handset and then offer unique content or free stuff. If Google/brands can offer enough of a benefit such as discounts and stuff for people to want to get this on their phone, then this could go somewhere.

www.qrme.co.uk launched over two months ago and as well as having news and videos based around QR codes the site also creates both a URL and SMS QR Code for you using data from your user profile. A member forum has also been set up for members to exchange ideas. There are instructions on the site on how to set up a free mobile website to link to your QR Code and the service is free.
