well situation you are describing isn't a direct effect of the economic crisis. And what is described here has been happening even before the crisis. I'm talking about Europe now, but the immigrant problems are the same all over the world. Of course economic crisis fueled the situation, and actually made people look in the numbers, which didn't change much from the last year for example. It's all about the mechanics of immigration, first father decides to leave for the foreign country, works hard, 3 jobs a day, and sends some money home - family thinks that life in that country is amazing and they www.chase.com immigrate too, putting strain on the finance of the 1 working male of the family - to the extent that it becomes unbearable, it's harder to find job for females and they immigrate back... this has been going on for a while now here in Italy. Very nice post with detailed comparison. I'm using DISQUS, it's good for me now. But after some days, I discovered intense debate, but changing from one to others is not a good idea :D, because it causes losing old comments.

I have been using cocomment and like it very much. I don't have to be a blog owner and it tracks all of my comments displaying them on a central page. where I can view and respond from there.
Not sure what Palin means by cocomment being more of an individual comment tracking.

Pali, we chose to review those commenting systems that bloggers can use on their blogs as an alternate commenting system than their blog system's default. Cocomment is more about individual comment tracking that i can use to track my comments across blogs.

Failed to get this one, Duncan 'one of the two options offers a fully SEO friendly/ indexable comment stream'. The debate about Disqus has been whether it provides SEO friendly comments on your blogs though it render these though a javascript. I have not got any clarity from Disqus on this.

What about cocomment? I was surprised that it has not been mentioned in this post. I have been using cocomment to post comments on other blogs and I have found it handy as it keeps track of the comments you have made and also lets you know if someone replies to your comment.

I have not implemented cocomment on my blog at http://www.afterthe.net/jou... because Wordpress has fairly good support for managing comments and Akismet does a decent job as far as catching spam in comments is concerned.

One of the thing that all these services claim is that you receive an increase in the volume of comments you receive (Fred Wilson mentioned that happened with Disqus, which he has invested in). Anyone have any experience of that happening?

I have been blogging for over 6 years and have used a number of these systems. My advice to the bloggers - Be careful with the comment replacement systems:

Make sure that you can get your data back: I have used YACC, than Haloscan and now Blogger comments and in the process lost 1000s of valuable comments to both of these systems. Exporting data from comment replacement system is easy, importing them back into your blog platform, not so much. So make sure that you have a plan in place to get the data back into your system before you start using a comment replacement system

Make sure that you keep your options open: One of the cool things about blogging with popular blog systems like wordpress is that there is a wonderful open source community that keeps producing cool plugins like CommentLuv etc. There were a number of times I wanted to try out some of these new innovations but using a proprietary platform was limiting.

Take a closer look at the SEO implications: Comments are important to having good page rank for your site. So make sure your comment replacement system exposes the comments so that they appear to be coming from your system and are not double indexed.

Summary: Don't just run after the latest comment replacement system. Weight the trade offs, your level of technical sophistication and than make a well considered choice

Great post...Indeed we are not a comment replacement system so the comment data stays within your system so there are no SEO issues/no ownership issues/no locking data in a walled garden. We are a universal profile service that just adds context and content discovery features to social conversations.

I use Intense Debate on my blog and absolutely love it. The most immediate benefit was that spam disappeared right away. I also love being able to see more context about the people who are commenting on my blog. Try it out. I bet you'll like it as much as I do.
