I'm quite disappointed, none of you spoke about Starzik.com, a french on-line music store. It's quite old fashioned but it has more than 6 millions songs, most of them DRM Free, and also offers some free songs sometimes.

More blogs of this kind are necessary. Recently, i visited elbow and came across Kanye West's tracks from his new album. These blogs have almost become a place where artists can advertise their new music regardless of if they are found on your radio or not. This is a new track for promotion and marketing that is plugged directly into the new digital market.

I totally agree with you St. jimmy....mp3 patronizing blogs are really the biggest source of free advertisements of record companies....it's giving both sides satisfaction so it's a good thing for them.....another thing here is that there are some Free Music sites that were less known to most but it is also giving so much for less spending lol just like this new site I have just discovered http://www.crygi.com/ that's got everything in it.....

Actually you can play files you get from Ruckus through Windows Media Player. You'll still need to open the Ruckus Player to renew the licenses, though. You can decode to wav and burn to cd with the proper WMP plugin (Chronotron WAV output) but I don't understand if it's legal or not (that is, the plugin is legal, but using it my violate the files' license).

There is also www.sellaband.com , where recorded artists have mp3's for download at 256kbps drm-free.
Plus lots of the artists on there have links on their pages to free music (like T-ka and Mandyleigh Storm)

Ruckus isn't as great as it seems. They talk it up a lot here at college, but their site is confusing to use and you can only play their music through their huge, gross media player. You can't play it through anything else, and can't put it on a portable player or burn to a cd. It's just frustrating to most college students and I don't know one person who ues it.

Also I have looked at SpiralFrog and found that a large portion of the content is in fact not downloadable. According to their help page they have fewer than 1 million tracks available. And I think it's misleading to say We7 "tends to focus on indie music". Very few indie acts that anyone has heard of can be found there--it appears to be focusing on people who don't have other ways of distributing their music.

Overall not one of the more useful Mashable lists.

Yes, it is totally ridiculous to list Hypemachine under "free and legal music". A good deal of the stuff you'd find through it would be unauthorized downloads. Yes, you could find legal downloads as well, but I think you're misleading people about the nature of mp3 blogs here.

@steve: i was surprised to get through all the comments without seening anything on this until your comment. yeah, it's nearly equivalent to saying that torrentspy offers free and legal music downloads.

good list of questionably legal, but still useful sites though.

Some of the places I've found with free music (and I've accumulated a number of sites at the FreeChristianMusic xanga blog) are http://www.download.com/ , as well as http://www.purevolume.com/ . I also see quite a sample of free to download songs on the authorized web sites of various bands (whether that be on http://www.myspace.com/ , some other portal, or a specific site hosted for the band).

It suggests artists that Ive never heard of but usually enjoy. I can download tracks as MP3s or order CDs from amazon. Plus they link to user submitted videos, photos, etc... great site.

I like discovering new music on SoundClick.com, and you can embed an audio player of your favorite tracks on Facebook, MySpace, etc. While there are some signed acts on SoundClick, it's mostly unsigned/indie bands.
