Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/09/30/mzinga/

Nice, but I don't think I can afford these guys yet. But, for those who can, they will be crazy not to hire them to build a custom social network that will actually build a fan base and generate an income.

Thanks Doriano for the nice overview.

Mzinga also has a really robust social learning solution that handles structured content, courses, and certification processes. Because of that we can work with companies at any point in their journey from structured hierarchies and management to very unstructured social media content and organization. We think that is of real value to companies because it is not an either/or choice and every customer we have is at a different point in their evolution. Social media without structure limits a company's ability to execute on the good ideas coming out of it. Structure without social media inhibits real learning and innovation.

    Thanks for the great post!

this is a totally random aside....but the the heck is the default profile image clearly of a *man*?!? Is it possible for websites to be sexist?

@paisano yes, thanks for the great write up. I had completely forgotten about the interview with Aaron at the Mashup Boston event - glad I was at least somewhat coherent during our interview.

@Luis, thanks for the kind words.

Great point about how the resulting sites are so custom & clean...some of our clients have asked us to build social network's similar to some of Mzinga's, and there are a lot of options & looks to choose from. I'm very impressed by their track record, and you're right -- having a few banner clients can definitely help.

Mzinga is a great way to increase communication throughout a company. I hear it is expensive but worth it, since everything is built to your specs.

they seem a little expensive for me at the moment. are there any others that are free with own domain names.
  • Ben Strackany · 11 months ago
@Bihari - To be honest, 100% free white label with your own domain name is a pretty low bar.

You could get free (other than domain name * hosting costs) by hosting your own version of Elgg or Dolphin. But it wouldn't be white label -- you'd have to pay extra for that.

You could also do Ning, which starts free (hosting is free too) but lets you pay a monthly fee to get your own domain name & such.

Beyond those, there are a decent number of white-label customizable options in between free & Mzinga for companies in need of online communities but under a cash crunch. Our normal recommendation to clients in that lower budget range is to customize one of the more popular off-the-shelf social networking packages.

Absolutely right. There are no such thing as cheap start ups here as many people wants to do it. Ning seems like a good option as its simple and cheap as far as others are considered. But then if you like your own ads it does get a little expensive.
