I wouldn't exactly call this an easter egg. facebook has always put some sort of sentence (maybe not the particular one at the moment that you mention here) at the bottom of pages. i actually can't remember a time when they didn't do it.

Yeah, this is definitely not a new phenomenon. Whoever is behind it must be a big Top Gun fan because I'm pretty sure one of the first ones I saw was "Too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns." Or, maybe Zuckerberg is a scientologist...

Now that they're making Facebook profiles partially public to get more Google coverage, it'd be great if they got a penalty because of hidden text.
Also if that's what passes for an Easter Egg these days, I'm a regular Einstein with my programming tricks.

As people have said, this isn't exactly new. Originally the text I remember seeing was, "I'll find something to put down here." Then, after the movie Wedding Crashers, it changed to, "I don't even know what a quail looks like." After that, I think it went to the, "To close for missles, I'm switching to guns," though I could be wrong. It doesn't seem to change very often, but I have noticed it changing more frequently in the last year than it had in the past.

Click the background of your Facebook, use your arrow keys to type Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B, A, Enter and then click your mouse. It's really cool!

I have discoverd that if u hit(in this order with the arrows on ur keyboard) : up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B , A, then hit enter. u must do this while ur on facebook. hven u klick at something or wright something afterwards ull se som kind of star flashy thingy its pretty cool when u log of or close the page it goes away=D enjoy

I was just looking at http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id... and ended up here. I think easter eggs is one of the best social media applications I have seen.
Its simple, it has a hook / creates uncertainty and gives benefits for those who use it alot (unlocking eggs available like levels in a game).
