    eMusic has been DRM-free forever and I believe it is one of the most popular pay-for-music download sites this side of iTunes.

    Also, it's subscription only in the sense that you pay a monthly fee to download a set amount of songs... and unlike other subscription services, you keep the songs after you end your subscription. Plus each song works out to be like a third of iTunes cost (I think like $0.30 for the plan I use...)

    It's indie only, but highly recommended. Lots of good artists and labels are involved.
