This seems pretty neat. Most likely a paid service just like the other Webchat stuff right? I guess they offer one with ads, but I would want to see how that works... How bloated do you think it is?

I realize Converdge is an enterprise-grade product, but how sweet would it be if this was off-the-shelf series of plugins for wordpress. Buddypress is on the right track, but I'm assuming Converdge is quite stable.

hello userplane (Joseph H and Andrew Cornett)!

please don't comment on your own stuff. this is so obvious...I used the app for about 2 minutes and got at least 5 errors...

    embarrassing ...

Excuse me? I am no way affiliated with userplane or mashable. It helps to know the facts when accusing someone of "commenting on their own stuff" when I have never done that. Steve Balmer = FAIL

While I definitely thought Facebook chat was a ridiculously silly feature, I find myself using it all the time.

My social network on facebook includes all of my contacts, and via Chat, I can choose those within my network to chat with, which is less than 1%. Instantaneous communication really is amazing and this app will be an amazing addition to pretty much any platform that adopts it.

Is there way to add just the bottom toolbar (i.e. Facebook) without popping up that eyesore chat box. I'd like to add something to my site that is just as simple as Facebook's app.

Perhaps there are other services that would do the trick?

The only thing bad about it is that the chat doesn't happen via ajax at the bottom of your browser--that chatting happens in the standard UserPlane new mini browser window popups. That's kind of wack.

Mashable, what you really need to do is make it so we can chat while we're reading your blogs, since that's the part of Mashable we use most. Currently, the chatting only happens in the Soc Net side of things, and not on the blog. I would to chat with everyone reading any article in the blog, as well a have star or something next to people's names to signify that they're reading the same article. That would be hot!

Otherwise, if anyone wants to chat, I'll be in the chat area, hit me up.

Interesting post. James check out BumpIn.com. Their web widget and browser plugin do exactly what you propose. Appears they are just coming out of a private beta ...
