Mashable - The Social Media Guide: This Week, Tweet to Beat Leukemia!

  • Denise Wakeman · 8 months ago
LLS is a fantastic organization. 2 years ago I trained for the Nike Women's Half Marathon with Team in Training to support LLS and raised nearly $5,000. I have friends and family members who suffer from leukemia and am a huge supporter of the cause. Please give generously. I'll definitely tweet this!

10 people's blood was tested in 2004 for 413 chemicals. More than 200 of these chemicals were found in their systems. The make up of the chemicals found in the blood samples was: 28 waste bi-products, 47 consumer bi-products (Teflon) , and 212 industrial chemicals. These chemicals did not come from their drinking water, their workplace, or their homes. The blood samples were taken from the umbilical cord. Some of the chemicals had been banned thirty years prior to the testing.

Great post Pete! I knew you guys were gonna kick arse after recovering from SXSW. Thanks for your support of Charity Smackdown. I'm backing Team Ernie to put shoes on kids in Darfur for Samaritan's Feet but everyone donating, tweeting, blogging to support a cause is setting a great example. Go Team Ernie --> http://charitysmackdown.com/team_ernie.html

Thank you so much ... what a fabulous idea to benefit the LLS and show the potential for good that social media can bring to the world! My mom was diagnosed with APL over 10 years ago and the support of the LLS was invaluable to my family and I. I've tweeted all these and hope others will RT as well.

Awesome cause! I hope you exceed your fundraising goals!

I have Non-hodgkins lymphoma (diagnosed at age 27) and have gone through over a year of treatment and am still going (after chemos, a transplant, and a clinical trial, I'm finally to radiation and hopefully will finally get to remission someday soon), so I definitely appreciate the heads up on more ways to get some funding to the LLS. Also, apparently Leukemia is the more popular topic here / more common cancer among people who read mashable? Your title left the Lymphoma part of LLS out and most comments concern Leukemia, is this a Leukemia specific fundraiser and not going to LLS as a whole or something?
  • mashable · 8 months ago
    Altebk,

I can't begin to imagine how challenging that must be - truly hope you get to remission very soon. Yes, it goes to all of the LLS and not leukemia specifically - we used leukemia only in the title for brevity, but funds go towards all of the LLS's blood cancer efforts.

I am in remission with APL and am doing really, really good! I am more than halfway through my two year maintanance therapy which my doctor says I couldn't be doing any better. Thanks for all your support and thanks twitter for using this avenue for donations. I needed their services in the beginning so I am very appreciative. Also, please donate blood!! I needed several transfusion as well. God bless!

Hi there Pete, I couldn't help but notice you were doing this fund raising. If you really want to make a difference for leukemia foundation and make some money on the side yourself please check out this link. http://itshrunk.com/54a23c. I just signed up Southern Colorado March of Dimes and we have many other national organizations using us (like The Special Olympics, Cystic Fibrosis foundation etc...) This is a no cost, no risk, no selling fund raising vehicle and you could give it to the Leukemia foundation. Get a hold of me if you have any questions at all.

You can purchase a Marrow Donor kit from the Marrow Donor Program at http://bit.ly/ryzXu (just need to swab inner cheek and send back). Also keep an eye out for Marrow Donor drives (they swab you for free). They had one recently in NYC. There's no reason a kid's got to suffer when there's likely a match around the corner or down the street. It's one of the easiest ways to help someone in a really big way.

Thanks for this. Greate job. We just created an app called http://tweet4blood.com from where you can request blood.

Thank you for all your hard work. My son is a childhood cancer survivor (diagnosed when he was six) and relapsed and underwent a bone marrow translant when he was nine for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (looks like T-cell leukemia under the microscope) he had a 20% survivial rate with transplant. He is now 21 years old and has some physical issues but we are blessed to have him here and knowing people like you and our friends to get us through the tough times. We lost our life's savings but gained a beautiful young man who has his whole life ahead of him. We also gained the knowledge that we can get through anything and as long as we have each other we can survive!!! Thanks for what you are doing!

Thrilled to help - my younger brother is a 20-year Lymphoma survivor. Miracles definitely do happen - we were prepared to say goodbye when he had a dramatic turnaround. He's lived an inspirational life ever since. Thanks for championing this Pete!
