Mashable - The Social Media Guide: The Top 6 Game-Changing Features of Google Wave

  • Cesar · 6 months ago
is the changing paradigm of communication, change the way we communicate, change the tools..
  • sultanofseo · 6 months ago
ughh you actually used the phrase changing paradigms
  • Hyloka · 6 months ago
Sounds like it could result in a wave of viruses
  • Andre Condurache · 6 months ago
    I agree...
  • imma · 6 months ago
Probably will lead to some, however if you want to be absolutely safe from viruses you can't really log on here and post, can you, as you have connected to the internet :-P
Viruses are bad, but non-existent viruses are no reason for panic ;-)

What will be interesting to see is how quickly Google adopts current accessibility standards for this product. This is a chance for the company to innovate how online communication reaches a broader audience; especially those of us who rely on assistive technology. The glaring problem I note so far is the "drag and drop" file feature. Also, proper labeling or keyboard key assignment will be important as it moves forward. Great for the masses but a headache for screen-reading software makers like Freedom Scientific.
  • Roger Kondrat · 6 months ago
I like that thought. Now that they have engineered and designed the basics e.g. concept, direction and platform, one should expect them to make a strong commitment to ensure the product if not broadly accessible today is at committed to occur in the near term. Good spot Allen!
  • Bugz · 4 months ago
Interactive communication may be an issue for accessibility but can be resolved if properly formatted real-time text files are made part of this communication tool.

Also, Drag and Drop Feature is not the norm but an additional feature.
  • physocal · 6 months ago
    COOL :)
  • Rax Lakhani · 6 months ago
Thanks Ben. I'm excited by all of these features - particularly the collaboration element of document sharing.

This is certainly a game changer for both brands and individuals alike. Can't wait to have a play!
  • ListenToLeon · 6 months ago
The future of Google Wave looks extremely promising so far. I and look forward to seeing the innovations that come thanks to it being open source.
  • johnfurst · 6 months ago
    I am excited.

Collaborating on Wave will be so much more effective than with current (or shall I say past) CSCW (computer supported collaborative work) software applications.

The limitations of most forum implementations will be history soon.

I agree that contributing this innovation to the open source community
    is a major leap.

    Yours
    John

    That's a good digest, Ben!

There might be another game changing side-effect of Google Wave - advanced adoption of HTML5 and completion of its implementations. And that's good for desktops, laptops, netbooks and smartphones. The last item is actually the most exciting since our data is getting pushed into the cloud allowing us to be more mobile.

    Cheers!

Great article on user-visible features of Google Wave.

Is it just me or does this seem like a bit of overkill? Twitter is so simple and fast to use, whereas Google Wave, although feature-rich looks like you have to have a degree in Rocket Science to use effectively.
  • Andre Condurache · 6 months ago
I don't think Wave has much viral potential, its mainly a long term project to revolutionize online collaboration.. and I think overall it has some great potential.
  • Bugz · 4 months ago
two different mediums.... god part, one's supporting other and ensuring it covers more users
  • PulSamsara · 3 months ago
It sounds pretty simple to me... it's just about as complex as you would like it to be... that's the nice part.

Twitter ?... call me crazy... maybe slow... but this is still something I don't get... the concept is simple enough... but ... hasn't this always been here ?

    The Future is WAVE.
  • Andres Kievsky · 6 months ago
This is very funny. You guys love buzzwords, don't you? The media seems to jump into every single bandwagon, no matter how idiotic.
  • David Sim · 6 months ago
Wave could indeed be a game changer. Most people suffer from email overload, caused in part by the need to cc. people into a conversation they only have limited interest in. The main barrier to adoption will be existing systems. How will the transition to Wave be managed when most businesses and customers will still be using email? Twitter is popular, but has not replaced either email or instant messaging - doing that is a far bigger step.
  • Andrew · 6 months ago
Am I the only person in the world who doesn't find this as impressive as most people seem to think it is?
  • Larry Bogert · 4 months ago
No you're not ... it's interesting, true, but a wait and see is necessary to find out if it actually helps solve problems, rather than create a whole bunch of new ones. That's the real test, not the buzz words that catch the media fancy.

This looks like an awesome collaboration tool for people who don't communicate well, verbally, with others, and put them on a competitive footing with those who do. Fantastic!
  • Ben Hilleli · 5 months ago
Mary, there is no substitute for certain skills. If an awesome collaboration tool was enough to offset ones bad communication skills then wouldn't email, chat & especially collaborative WIKIs have already done the trick? (and even if they did, you can't hide behind software forever... believe me, I've tried...)

As far as I can tell, Wave is but an advanced collaborative Wiki... Very similar, albeit more feature-rich AND FAR BETTER FUNDED ;-) than some of the Wiki Startups I've seen... Cool, helpful, fits certain niches, but revolutionary?

Email, Chat, collaborative forums & increasingly Wikis ARE/WERE revolutionary. They created new modes of communication & doing things. From what I've seen so far Wave seems an interesting evolution but not quite sure about all the hype...

Email & chat aren't new and they've become everyday staples. I'm just not sure how quick people will rush to adopt this (and I'm not talking about us techs, geeks, dweebs... I'm talking about those other folks...)
  • kamui · 6 months ago
About the drag-and-dropt, I'd like to say that the dragdropupload extension for Firefox already allows you to just drag files to file type inputs. Works great with Gmail too!

It sounds like they're basically combining a lot of stuff we'd like into one app - which I'm fine with. There's nothing new her per se, just a lot of stuff that we'd like or others have done in one place.

I'm curious what this means to other lifestreaming/social media sites with similar services. Then again at this rate it's all becoming "wheels within wheels"
  • Mollie Vandor · 6 months ago
I'm equal parts excited for google wave's implications for the web world & terrified of having to incorporate one more hot new way we use the web into our product development.
  • Chris · 6 months ago
Now if google can just make it look not so ugly and old it will be awesome. Why hasn't the biggest online company yet adopted web 2.0 into their designs? Google looks so old, i think its time for a re-design guys!!!
  • GSM Horloges · 6 months ago
Google will change more utillities in Google Wave in a couple of months.
  • GSM Horloges · 6 months ago
I think there will become a new update of Google Wave in august 2009.

The greatest benefit of Facebook is that it has many groups on the site that you can join. So if you are interested in Chicago Cubs you can research Chicago Cubs in the groups section and you will be able to find friends on there that like the Cubs. This is just one example, I know that you can join groups of your favorite football team, television show, or whatever you want for the most part! If you can't find a group for your interest, you can simply create one!

What I keep wondering is how does Google benefit from this? How does developing and launching Wave help Google's bottom line?
It's not a vehicle for ad display for example.
Is it all about blocking the ascendancy of FB and Twitter as default ways people interact via internet?
  • shouldn'tMatter · 2 months ago
It makes money off of google wave by having a lot of people sine up for accounts with them which allows them to advertise more.
  • webster12 · 6 months ago
Can't wait for this thing. I'm definitely going to try it out!
  • Paul Spence · 6 months ago
Although I'm still getting my head around Wave, I like the idea that it is an open technology that others can add value to with their own innovations. Providers of proprietary collaboration software will rightfully be worried. Wave seems to facilitate additional layers of context that we do not currently see in traditional services. That surely must be a good thing.

Will Google Wave allow me to communicate with people who don't have Wave but just email or some IM?
  • paramendra · 5 months ago
For all the buzz there are not that many blogs devoted completely to Wave. Mashable does not have a separate section for Wave.
  • Future Technology Dude · 5 months ago
I don't know if I like the wave. I guess I have to test try it out.
  • Nin Neri · 5 months ago
google wave is like a browser setup according to your internet use. you just log on to google wave, and then all internet media u use are simplified and organized in wave. its an internet browser inside.
on the other side, other companies can create their own same as wave but it can not actually compare to the Google brand.
this can soon be a single tool to make money. everybody will use the wave.
  • Adrian | Impact Media · 5 months ago
Great overview of Google Wave. Thanks.
  • your uncle · 4 months ago
You're so excited you're gonna pee yourself. This is all been done before. the only interesting and may be new feature is email playback, but if you're so stupid that you can't scroll an email to see how it progressed perhaps you need to be on Google Wave.
