This is a very good list. My year book for example is one of my favorite online social communities because it is like facebook plus the bells and whistles. The humor of leaving those crazy text comments on everyones wall is outlandish.

I'm very active in 20SB on Ning. I was number 122 so it's amazing how big it's gotten in the past year and a half but it still remains such a great community.

I'm new to Brazen Careerist though and haven't heard about the others but I'm definitely going to check them out.

    Great post!

Dan, I am very happy that FD Career made it on your top ten list. We are working super hard to create a site that will benefit the Gen Y. We're still in Beta mode, but hopefully we'll be able to fix all the bugs and generate more quests.

All these sites are really good. I've already checked them all out.

This website is what facebook was...and more!...thequad.com encompasses everything college, is easy to use and is well designed. The best part is that it is only for people with and edu. so people who shouldn't see what you're doing won't.
    Rock on!!!!

Enjoyed your blog, Dan, I feel so "connected".
As a brazen Gen Y'er I also want to give a shoutout to CampusCompare, an interactive college search website and social network. In their dynamic ‘virtual campus’, they connect high school and college students to over 3,000 universities and each other, publishing fresh student reviews and merging campus life experiences. You can even find your odds of getting into any school! (ouch)

Very nice list. Unigo is pretty helpful. I've used it before to help narrow down my choices. I've been looking for something like CoolPeopleCare to help find more volunteering opportunities within my community for a while, so thanks on the head's up! Will also give the other sites a visit.

All well and good, there's some useful stuff here, BUT you might want to keep in mind a quote from a member of what might be called the -C generation, Marcus Tullius Cicero, now engraved, on university libraries:

"He who knows only his own generation remains forever a child."

each one of these networks is trashy, tacky, irrelevant, gimmicky garbage. Also, labelling a 'generation' as x,y, or z is a hideous cliche.

Hey - I have recently started a new social network site aimed at Gen-Yers so interesting to see this post! The idea of this site is to pull together all the creativity of Gen Yers on the web as there is some truly amazing stuff outside of the blogosphere which 20SB is aimed at. It also has a blog based around product news, debate and marketing aimed at or around gen-y.

Have a look and see what you think!

Great article! I am looking for info on gen y's feelings on exercise, health clubs and anything fitness related. Do they like health clubs? Are they brand loyal, which brands do they prefer, how to keep them entertained while exercising, does the technology trend apply to fitness..do they like new gadgets, etc. Can you help me? Thanks

What?? There is no BADOO?? Badoo is the coolest social network for Gen-Yers. I don't get it, so much talk about socila networks and no mention of Badoo. www.badsoo.com

This is an interesting article. I am a Gen-Y'er and have never heard of that social network. I will definitely check it out. As I college student, I will also check out thequad - I think that is a great name (as most college students can tell you). I also like www.incompany.com which is a business social network, maybe it will make this list soon.
  • businesssocialnetwork · 3 months ago
This is a good list. Some other sites that are good for business networking are www.bnet.com and http://www.incompany.com
  • Networking · 3 months ago
Great article. I haven't heard of many of these so it was really helpful. I was surprised that Facebook or Myspace weren't up there but I guess they don't need to be since everyone knows them already. I actually just heard about one new business networking site for young professionals called InCompany (www.incompany.com) which looks like it could also be an up-and-coming social network for Generation Y. Thanks again for these site ideas.

This is a pretty good list. I really like the concept of thequad.com; as a college student this really makes sense over facebook. I also like the clever name. Obama's website during his campaign was genius. I suspect that we will be seeing much more of this kind of political campaigning in the future.
