Mashable - The Social Media Guide: The New, New, New Facebook: Hundreds of Thousands Organize in Protest

  • fogofeternity · 1 month ago
While I'm not a huge fan of the Facebook changes, I find the mass protests both amusing and slightly pitiful. I don't know whether it's a good thing that social media provokes such powerful emotions, or whether it demonstrates how social media exacerbates the "me too" problem of society as a whole.

I doubt that 500,000 people really care that much about Facebook's minor, if slightly irritating, change. If they really do care then to be honest they should go out and find a hobby or something, because they seriously have too much time on their hands. But it's so easy to just click on a link and "agree" even when you don't care that much, that it creates these supposed mass movements made up of hundreds of thousands of people are are, in truth, largely apathetic.

nothing is permanent except change, I love new Facebook page. I Know that every time Facebook change, there are a lot of people try to protest it.... I Hate those poeple who dont like change....
  • Leonard Challis · 1 month ago
Every time there is a tiny change a new group pops up. GIVE ME BACK MY [insert something here]. Let's face it - If we went back to the "old" Facebook now think how primitive we'd find it. People just hate change, it's boring and predictable. The vast majority start complaining without thinking about what they are saying or actually trying out the new features properly. The changes will become the norm and then the cycle will repeat itself.

As well as this, people need to understand Facebook are providing us with an awesome free service - making things perfect takes time. Don't expect a new feature to be amazing right away. That said, I really prefer this method, and look forward to the updates down the line. I also love how I can change the default feed on my facebook home page by reordering any list from the left up to the top. This is awesome.
  • Kevin Manne · 1 month ago
This happens every time Facebook changes anything. Everyone threw a fit when they switched to the Twitter-style news feed on the home page - now suddenly everyone loves it and wants it back!
  • jaysal · 1 month ago
Hahah so true and ironic... Just proves people just wanna complain and are incapable of accepting change.
  • rgc1600 · 1 month ago
I've never complained before. In fact, I've liked the previous changes. But this one is just dumb, and I'll complain because it's warranted, if that doesn't offend you too much.
  • Chris Baskind · 1 month ago
I'm not a heavy Facebook user, but I like the changes. The page is cleaner and more useful. You can see the influence of the former Friendfeed engineers.

I do think they should have called the "news feed" what it was tagged on FF, though: Best of Day. Makes its purpose clearer, and that's why it probably seems that items are 24 hours old.
  • bradcooper · 1 month ago
does anyone know if there is a way to get back the the "Show hidden posts" link that used to be on bottom of the news feed? wonder why they took it away? thanks!
  • Name · 1 month ago
Well, what do you expect. When Facebook (with about a zillion users) makes any change, some percentage of people are not going to like it. Here's the problem. What does FB do when 300K or so people complain? If they ignore them, they look like they don't care. If they do something, they risk alienating the people who like the change.

Facebook needs to learn that people don't like to be told what to do. If they can figure out a way to roll out changes so that they are optional and then slowly retire the previous release, things will go much better. What the complainers are really complaining about is their lack of choice.

This sounds less like a development problem and more like a marketing problem to me.

It's Facebook! Get over people and get a life.
  • D · 1 month ago
the change is fine. what is not at all fine whatsoever is that there was no prominent message explaining the change the first time you login to the new design. just put a message up explaining. in fact, they can still do this. they should just put one up right now. you read it once, understand, and then no one is confused why their friends have all suddenly seemed to stop updating.
  • Jerry Zambrano · 1 month ago
    Thanks for the post.
Obviously, as you said, many social hubs make changes, drastic or otherwise. I've seen many a protest at several places in my times. I've very rarely, if at all, seen that a site has responded to frustrated user's complaints.

I completely agree that it was a poor choice on behalf of Facebook. News feeds ought to be live and real time. And what's up with the refresh to get active feed updates?

    Oh, well...

  • Yrjan Lund (aka rzr) · 1 month ago
The only gripe I have with Facebook's feed is that it still isn't customizable, after all this time. Is it really that difficult to implement options for me to remove or add what kind of messages I want in the News Feed? They added the option to hide or view specific sources, but not the type of news items themselves.

Other than that I don't see a problem, although I could take or leave the change personally. I'm ambivalent about it for one simple reason; Just switch to the Live Feed and it's basically the same as the News Feed used to be before this update happened.

I didn't understand why people were crying over the last update, and this one is even less of a change. Is it really that hard to adapt?
  • Gerda Kluitenberg · 1 month ago
I dislike the change. I don't want to see a digest and I don't want Facebook to decide what is interesting for me to see. I want to see all. If I don't want to see all I can make use of the filter options.

yes it's not good. i don't like it at all. :(
  • Jeff Pester · 1 month ago
@Denise; Very few if any do.

Facebook has two big problems: 1) Twitter has f**ked with their heads and has them chasing "real-time" for no apparent reason, and 2) They have a serious problem with declining core user engagement (outside of Mobwars, Farmville, etc).

The combination of the two has them chasing ghosts, and their tail, all at the same time.
  • kathie · 1 month ago
If you dont like the new FB here is how you can change it back to the old. Look to the top left menu and click on MORE. Then drag STATUS UPDATES to the top. After dragging to top, click on it. That becomes your default and it is like before. Pass it on!
  • melissa mcgee · 1 month ago
kathie, changing your default to "status updates" is not like it was before - this changes it to status updates ONLY - no links, no photos, no notes, no news stories, etc.
  • gnb · 1 month ago
FYI: You won't see any wall-to-wall updates.
  • JGift · 1 month ago
The only problem with that is that it cuts off feeds to people's links and only gives you their status updates. FB has made it an either/or situation.
  • Joe · 1 month ago
Doesn't work in the fact pics....video's & links don't appear in that mode
  • E.J. · 1 month ago
Kath, that only gives you status updates. It doesn't show you when your friends post pictures and links.

Again Facebook puts the burden of opting out on the users--by default, everything you do on Facebook is now visible to ALL your friends, even if you had previously turned off some of the options.

  • advocatus · 1 month ago
You need to learn to manage your privacy settings, make friend lists and hide pages/groups/people on your feed. None of this is difficult, although it is a bit time consuming. Put the time into it, and you can manage Facebook in a fantastic way, like I have.
  • SquareWheel · 1 month ago
Exactly. Use the lists feature like advocatus suggests, and hide pages that you don't want to hear from.
  • btrandolph · 3 weeks ago
facebook has made a lot of progress toward making it possible, if not braindeads easy, to adjust privacy settings and use friend lists to control who sees what. I wrote a couple of quick how to's a few months ago: http://btrandolph.com/2009/06/facebook-friend-l.... more recently, I covered how to get rid of all the stupid game notifications - it's very easy: http://btrandolph.com/2009/10/bad-news-for-time.... have fun!

  • pcloadletter · 1 month ago
    False.
  • melissa mcgee · 1 month ago
you can change your default setting from the news feed back to "status updates", but then that's *all* you get... no links, photos, notes, etc. JUST status updates. news feed is preferable to status updates in that you get more information - but i don't care a wit that john smith just became friends with jane doe. i like that facebook tries to keep things from getting stale - but i hate that they fix what isn't broken. there has to be a happy medium...

It's just one more click I have to make to keep up with friends. Also, the timeline is now disjointed. My interest in my friend's every move is low. I'd rather see what they have to see than have the stream jammed up with news about unimportant details.

I could have sworn I saw this "Live Feed/News Feed" option before- on Version 2.0 of Facebook for the iphone. It went away when they updated FB for iphone several months ago. How is this different from that?
  • Justin · 1 month ago
People who start groups like this just show off their extreme fear of change and inability to adapt to evolving technology and software.. If I got mad and expected adobe to go back to a previous version of their software every time it changed i'd get left in the dust.

What if when they came out with email everyone threw a fit and said NO go back to snail mail this is scary and different. And everyone just said... Ya know you're right change is terrible lets ditch this idea.

Throwing fits about change doesn't make any sense to me. Adapt or get left behind.

I started using FB sometime in 2007-2008 and wasn't around to see how it "previously" was. However, I am not entirely a fan of the new updates but I am a person who enjoys change as it keeps things refreshing and new. The only features I don't care to have are the fact that you can see who everyone becomes friends with on the Home screen. This information was available via individual's profiles- which to me, was enough. I also feel that the extra toggling between the "News Feed" and "Live Feed" is a bit much when trying to accurately keep up with everything. But as always, in time everyone will adapt and forget all about their complaints. I've personally started to only use FB on my phone as that hasn't changed (in a bad way).

Since I knew the changeover was going to happen I knew that people would have problems with it and I also know that like previous updates people will learn to accept these changes. I have my own gripes with Facebook because I think that they could do the little things better...which I always find is a nice way to round off a good user experience. My main problem with this iteration is the constant refreshing which is a big thumbs down compared to telling us there is new updates and how many.

Facebook has a terrible history of addressing any complaints for actually fixing the things that don't work. They have an even worse history of even acknowledging user issues.

Link attachment disappears sometimes, when trying to add a link.

I'd love to see "Media Feed" feature, where you could add all the RSS feeds you love, and want to follow via Facebook. Right next to Live Feed, and then cut off News Feed, which only shows some older posts, so in my opinion quite needless.

I created the group "I don't understand people complaining about Facebook's interface changes" (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gi...)

Yes I don't understand people complaining about these changes:

It's not that I don't like the New Feeds I do; I enjoy seeing what my friends are up to. Here's my complaint... I click on Live Feed and something from a friend is there... I refresh the page and that same item is no longer there... I refresh the page again and it magically reappears. It's become a game to try to keep up with what friends are posting. It shouldn't be this difficult.
  • Cris · 1 month ago
I LIKE the changes they've made. Who friended who? That used to be on the news feed. They took it away. It's actually quite useful. I find it pretty sad that people have nothing better to do than complain. There are probably far more people that do like the changes, but because they don't voice their opinions, the complainers have the louder voice. I certainly hope Facebook doesn't listen to these complaints. The new feed is fine!

i think that this relatively small change (in my opinion) has angered many really shows you that social networking does not result in happier people. group polarisation in full effect!
  • Name · 1 month ago
You can't change it back to the old. That is not accurate. What is being passed on is how to set your default view to status updates. A Status update is something one of your firends writes..like have a good day..or my child is sick,,or Go Yankees. If your friend posts a link or a new picture (emphasise new)..or your fan pages post updates..you will not see them under status updates. If you send or receive gifts and hearts..you will not see them either. You may be missing some of the good stuff. If you want to eliminate new comments on old pics..or ...." is now friends" every other post then you should do the following. Go to Settings in top right -> privacy settings-> news feed and wall -> and UNcheck everything except "Wall post" This will stop all the things you don't really care about and help you not miss the stuff you do. You need to tell everyone because after you do that, you'll be eliminating your movements but you'll still see everyone elses!
  • lisamikulski · 1 month ago
The changes have rendered Facebook almost nonfunctional, for me, for about a week. Can't login. Can't post status updates. My friend list is now at 0!!?? If I do manage to login, nothing works right.... errors errors and more errors.

What is going on??? Any ideas?
  • Walldo · 1 month ago
There are a ton of people complaining, but not about any real valid points. This has been going on for the last 4 or 5 years: Any time Facebook changes, there are a bunch of different groups and thousands of "waaah facebook sux i am gonna quit" status updates. They all learn to cope, just like they will this time. Facebook will smooth out the worst of the bugs (they are definitely there) and in two months, no one will even remember what the old facebook looked like.
  • Walldo · 1 month ago
the one thing I despise about the format is that they decided to EXPAND the 'suggestions' box without a way to turn it off. Now instead of getting friend suggestions for people I don't even know, I'm being told to write on the walls of people I haven't talked to in years. I understand that is the "point" of Facebook but for the love of god, let us turn it off. Or at least when I "X" someone's name, don't re-suggest them two days later.

Now they need to take into consideration of how many so called complaints before the change and the millions that they are getting now. As a facebook user with over 1000 friends, who in their right mind would think I want to know everytime anyone of those thousand people add a friend or join a group?? It makes no sense. No, that is almost all my pages consist of. It is ridicoulous. And who are they to say which one of my friends are important to me and who are not important enough to be on the news feed??

Over a million people joined groups after the last disasterous redesign and the FB powers that be gave us all the virtual finger and did nothing. It has gotten to the point that when they make changes we just have to cross our fingers and pray it doesn't get that much worse. Awesome business model there.

You're right in that they have addressed concerns that have long since been forgotten. It's never comfortable to reorganize your thinking when it comes to interacting with a website. But, it's even more frustration when you're forced to do it every few months. Just when we get used to it being one way, they change it up.

OK so Facebook wants to make changes - I can deal with the changes - BUT, for well over a week now, my account is not available, my friends appear and are gone again, major technical issues that a big name utility should not be experiencing. Typical Facebook -- don't ask anybody what they want, make changes to the personal interface and then act all surprised when there is a revolt. Happens every year or so. Now someone from Facebook will offer apologies, promised that they will do a better job of listening next time and either roll back the changes or give us a way to put it back the way it was.

It is easy to make sense of each facebook change when you proceed on the assumption that they will never do anything that will not (eventually) put more adverts in your face.

This includes limiting the amount of original content from friends that you can see, to make room for what generates revenue.
  • gwoodard · 1 month ago
Boolean capability on the left of the live feed would solve all my issues, but facebook will NEVER do this because it would mean they could not take money from people to spam me with unoriginal content.

All I want is to see original content from friends and nothing more. They will never allow this because it would mean they would have to make money the old fashioned way with banner ads. That's too much like work. I have their number on this, bet me.

I'm NOT resistant to change...I thought the changes would be that I wouldn't have to endure game/app/poll results (i.e. so-and-so just found a black sheep in Farmville). Instead, it seems that FB uses some sort of algorithm to determine what is "interesting" for the News Feed and there are still some of those game results there and other things I WOULD find interesting are only visible if I go to Live Feed, where I have to endure a whole lot of clutter...

Minor change?!! Come on! I am unable to tell from any given feed what the current posts are. Newsfeed is hours old; Live Feed may be the most up to date for a while, but then reverts back to an older post; some friends don't show up at all off and on, my friend groups appear all messed up.

I had to post a notice repeatedly to tell friends how to change settings so who they friend doesn't clutter up everyone's wall. (Altho some still haven't made the change and I"m still getting Fan of notices.) I now have to click thru all the feeds just to see what I'm missing. So please don't call this a MINOR change.

And I DO NOT like FB telling me to contact my less active friends or suggest profile photos for them to use. If my friends don't want to contact me or have a photo, that's their business.

Finally, why do I suspect that FB has done this to free up all that space where Highlights used to be so they can put in a while bunch of paid advertising?

Facebook is trying to do just that.Save face. They keep patching they're old page. What everybody from Microsoft on down knows, you have to throw the old webpage away and build an entirely new page.It took NBC 5 years to build a new webpage. Why fix it ? Why keep fixing it ? Get it ?

It is so confusing. I post remarks, and photos, then can't find where they are visible to my friends. They send me message, and it doesn't show up. But it does show up in my AOL email.
I am certain nor convinced that these changes were really an enhancement or frustration. It actually makes me feel "why the bother", I may go back to email communicating.
I do like FB for the social connections. But this is a mess currently. Can someone please tell me what made the changes better?
