You don't need to be in the military or a family member of someone who serves to use the USAA banking products. Because they're FDIC, they're required by the fed gov't to open membership to the general public. If you want to bank with them... go to their site and contact them.

Interesting in the USA. Other places have banking systems that are not stuck in the 1800s where checks don't exist. All transfers are electronic. Imagine that! Example: Employers transfer money to your bank account electronically. Or I go to an ATM, enter somebody's bank account #, and transfer money to them.

This is a neat solution, but really, what the USA needs to do is wean itself from checks. Can't be that hard?!

When I was in the Navy, I switched from the Navy Federal Credit Union to USAA and was very satisfied.

I think the fact that it doesn't have a large brick and mortar presence is highly relevant to the article though, b/c with the iPhone app it truly doesn't matter. Anyways I did re-word slightly to eliminate confusion.

It's a bit like calling ING a relatively small bank, since there are no discrete branches at all. I didn't know we cared so much about brick and mortar.

USAA has been a relatively huge force in banking because their customer satisfaction is through the roof and they provide great value for their customers. Remote check depositing is just another form of finding ways to make their members happy; that's all.

This is cool. Too bad it's not my bank. However, they are a little bit over enthusiastic about it. Depositing checks isn't all that important. Too bad you can't get cash out of it.

Though, I guess it is nice to be able to put the check in immediately and then go and use your card.

Actually USAA is an Internet bank, about 1/2 the size of Chase (for example) and they do not do any Business banking (individuals only) and pretty much every bank that is bigger than they are does do business banking. What this means is that they are focused on the needs of retail customers, and they do a great job. I have been a customer for about 25 years.

This is an old fashioned way of transfering money - end less secure than cards with chip and pins. Checks will soon be history. I haven't seen a check in years. USA will follow Europe eventually. So why don't USAA focus on future banking? This is not the future :)
