Mashable - The Social Media Guide: The Future of Banking? Deposit Checks via iPhone

  • Chris · 4 months ago
Relatively small bank?? USAA is the largest insurer to the USA's armed forces and their families. They probably have millions of members. A little research please...
  • Josh · 4 months ago
Thank You for saying this. I was about to say the same thing.
  • Christian Brosstad · 4 months ago
This is an old fashioned way of transfering money - end less secure than cards with chip and pins. Checks will soon be history. I haven't seen a check in years. USA will follow Europe eventually. So why don't USAA focus on future banking? This is not the future :)
  • David · 4 months ago
Actually USAA is an Internet bank, about 1/2 the size of Chase (for example) and they do not do any Business banking (individuals only) and pretty much every bank that is bigger than they are does do business banking. What this means is that they are focused on the needs of retail customers, and they do a great job. I have been a customer for about 25 years.

So glad this is my bank, I've been using their Deposit@Home for several years now with my scanner, it's awesome!
  • rivensky · 4 months ago
same here! I love USAA. the Deposit@Home is the best banking idea ever!

I don't know if the banking part will be successful. Banking is something i always want to control, and if someone gets ahold of my phone, i'm sure they can find a way to hack to get into my account.

Wow! I wonder how soon a major bank will jump on that service? I would love to be able to scan, take a picture, etc... and NOT have to go waste gas to drive to my bank to deposit checks! Great idea/app. Can't wait until the major banks do this.

It's only 1 bank right now, & I see No mention of the data being Encrypted. That would scare the H**l out of me, so I would NEVER use it.
  • Kathleen · 4 months ago
This is my problem with it. No encryption or at least no obvious encryption. Just too easy to hack the iPhone or transmissions right now.
  • Tech Nerd · 4 months ago
thank you that's what i thought too.

This is some uberly cool stuff. Just wait until we'll be able to use our cell phones as a credit card AND debit card as well. It's comin' folks...
  • Harry · 4 months ago
Very interesting... The big banks better catch onto this!

"A small Texas Bank?" MASHABLE, again, do your homework. USAA is Fortune 500 level banking for a large number of active and retired Military.
  • Adam Ostrow · 4 months ago
relatively small in terms of branches ... I didn't call it "a small Texas bank"
  • esjay · 4 months ago
It's a bit like calling ING a relatively small bank, since there are no discrete branches at all. I didn't know we cared so much about brick and mortar.

USAA has been a relatively huge force in banking because their customer satisfaction is through the roof and they provide great value for their customers. Remote check depositing is just another form of finding ways to make their members happy; that's all.
  • Adam Ostrow · 4 months ago
I think the fact that it doesn't have a large brick and mortar presence is highly relevant to the article though, b/c with the iPhone app it truly doesn't matter. Anyways I did re-word slightly to eliminate confusion.
  • netspencer · 4 months ago
This is cool. Too bad it's not my bank. However, they are a little bit over enthusiastic about it. Depositing checks isn't all that important. Too bad you can't get cash out of it.

Though, I guess it is nice to be able to put the check in immediately and then go and use your card.

The iPhone does print money - for Apple and those who write the Apps.
  • netspencer · 4 months ago
    haha good point. :)
  • David · 4 months ago
Actually, the WV United Federal Credit Union already has an iPhone scan/deposit app that is operational - http://www.wvunited.org/iphone.htm - they truly are a small bank
  • DealShouter · 4 months ago
Well, I guess how I'll be missing on the future of banking because I don't plan on getting a iPhone anytime in the near future.
  • Artis · 4 months ago
I do not know what is USAA but I already like what they do.
  • Alex · 4 months ago
Wooooohoo -and the rest of us folks that don't actually want an iphone can go suckit - correct?

All for great advances -but not when it's leaning to one bias like this.

BTW - get over it people,it's still JUST a phone ;)
  • Chris Robinson · 4 months ago
Very cool, hope Union Bank does something like this
  • Kee Hinckley · 4 months ago
Worked like a charm! I saw the news item this afternoon, had a check ready, and deposited it with my iPhone!
  • Josh · 4 months ago
When I was in the Navy, I switched from the Navy Federal Credit Union to USAA and was very satisfied.
  • nikolaus heger · 4 months ago
Interesting in the USA. Other places have banking systems that are not stuck in the 1800s where checks don't exist. All transfers are electronic. Imagine that! Example: Employers transfer money to your bank account electronically. Or I go to an ATM, enter somebody's bank account #, and transfer money to them.

This is a neat solution, but really, what the USA needs to do is wean itself from checks. Can't be that hard?!
  • Your Name*rdowns · 3 months ago
You don't need to be in the military or a family member of someone who serves to use the USAA banking products. Because they're FDIC, they're required by the fed gov't to open membership to the general public. If you want to bank with them... go to their site and contact them.

Thanks for this information. It is useful for me.
