This applies to enterprise sales and marketing too, not just business to consumer. With all the noise out there and what seems like millions of vendors trying to get the prospective buyer’s attention, it seems like a good idea to mix it up a bit. And it applies to more than just advertising. Business-to-business “fun content” works too.

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

brilliant..sj

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

funny video.. nice

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

Ummm... the escalator is going up through the whole video... just like normal

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

This was highly enjoyable!
A lot of stuff to take from this viral video - feel good factor, social responsibility, funny, all really good elements for a viral video.

Have seen loads of viral videos however this one is so under promoting of the brand or product and is so high on the social responsibility and fun factor that you really just want to forward it on
hats of to VW for that.
Muneer
http://Muneer.co.uk

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

I like it how they made the escalator go the other way so everyone had to use the stairs. They are generating buzz about VW - in general this is good (people talking) but they upped it with socially aware videos masked by intelligence and fun.

VW is marketing their brand as cool - at least here in the US the majority of their line is geared toward a younger buyer - they are building status with their messages. The same way Volvo is always car number 1 when you think safety VW evokes a sense of urban cool, wittiness - they are the ipod and starbucks of automobiles.

Cadillac could never pull this off, but someone like Mitsubishi could... VW is just a step ahead of everyone in this game.

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

A good article. I particularly like the piano video. As I have read what's being discussed at music conferences, I get the sense that everyone is still not looking far enough to the future. Major labels are over. Most recorded music is available online in some fashion for free. The latest focus is on direct-to-fan sales, but that still assumes there are artists and there are fans. But as content becomes more collaborative, I think the difference between fans and artists will blur until the artist becomes the organizer who facilitates more creative participation by everyone. While the piano experiment is just one idea, the fact that people are having fun interacting with it, and others are having fun forwarding the video, suggests to me that more activities like this will be well-received.

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

Tiny logo at the end? But if you really think about it if VW makes car more fun-more people will drive, more often. It brings a smile to my face when the "big guys" get it and are happy to spend time, effort and money on a campaign that isn't directly selling.

You can imagine the classic "What's the ROI?" type conversation being swept aside, as they actually think about the type of conversation and positive comments that will be made about the brand.

Nice, subtle, fun and entertaining. Simple is difficult; complicated (rather than complexity, which is subtly but fundamentally different) is easy. The very best minds are those able to create AND communicate simplicity. Estee Lauder said: "You can write a book about what you don't know. You really have to know what you're talking about to say it in one sentence." She nailed, just like DDB Stockholm, Volkswagen and you did.

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

nice concept - dreadful video

Re: The Fun Theory: Volkswagen Masters the Viral Video

Brilliant! This is a great way for videos to be used properly as marketing media. Piano stairs has a great idea behind- not only fun, but making being healthy fun. Volkswagen what will you think of next? Their interactive media department should get a raise.
