It may seem hostile, but a company protecting its business practices shouldn't come as a surprise. I hate the record labels being such twaats, but I am not surprised that they are trying to keep themselves viable.

An application that allows someone to circumvent the core function of the phone, thus taking away business from the carrier, seems to me to be a bit of an important thing for AT&T via Apple to block.

That's why I love my Palm Pre and Sprint. I now pay $69/month for unlimited: mobile calls (to any network), web, text, photo, video, GPS. Then I have 450 to call landlines. Basically anytime I think I'm calling a landline, I use the Google Voice app on my Pre. It's super easy for me to use Google Voice and it saves me a ton of money every month. Thank you for not being dumb Sprint! Oh, and thanks Google Voice for saving me some cashola.

I completely agree, since where do we have to sign a contract giving money to Google to use Google Voice?

Oh and to top it off, Google Voice is not available for everyone. I just happen to have a Google Voice account.

Google's response missed the elephant in the room. Google is not a phone company, nor do they take money from customers every month, in exchange for the ability to make phone calls. That money that AT&T charges its customers obligates AT&T to complete phone calls. Needless to say, however high those charges may be, AT&T is reimbursed for those charges, through a process called 'customer billing'.

These are pretty big distinctions. I could see AT&T attempting such transparent foolery, but seems like it should be quite apparent to the FCC that Google is not phone company.

The A in AT&T stands for Ass*&^%. I'm stuck with them because of where I live, but I decided to just go and buy a cell phone outright, rather than shackle myself to them in another 2 year contract. I've got my google voice number too - so the minute I see daylight, I'm bouncing!!

Face it, AT&T sucks, they are greedy and Google is trying to free the people from overpaying over-priced AT&T. Their advanced technology is not really "advanced", face it!

All I can say is wow.

I am a very happy Google customer (via my cell - T-mobile has not tried to block GV, thank goodness), and a very much captive At&T residential customer for safety / security and DSL monopoly / lack of affordable choices reasons.
