Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Susan Boyle: The Biggest YouTube Sensation Ever?

  • Jo Jordan · 7 months ago
Will you bring us the equivalent numbers next week. Amazing.
  • Susan is a STAR* · 7 months ago
WOW! this open other doors for older one's to become a star.. and there is so much talent out in the world that never get heard.. I think this is incredible for Susan.. She is already a star* in my book. *suntak*
  • Joe Dawson · 7 months ago
I watched the show with my family and we all stood still in awe! What a reaction to a beautiful moment that has inspired so much attention. Congratulations Susan :)
  • darlene.das42 · 7 months ago
Being a designer - I would love to make her over. Not that she isn't beautiful on the inside but for her - She will have a fabulous life and I would love to see her have as much respect as possible.
We are all superficial in that when we first saw her- we had no good opinions of her and she knows that being 47 years old. She could be 47 years young and smiling!
I wish her all that she deserves.
    darlene das
  • anne · 7 months ago
I agree, she is shining from the inside, but we as a society, are very superficial. I think a makeover would work. Again, she is absolutely beautiful when she sings thie song.
  • anne · 7 months ago
By the way, I just viewed the video of Susan Boyle singing and I watched it 20 times. I had the goosebumps each time I watched it.

A new Susan Boyle song has leaked that she recorded for a 1999 charity single - streaming here http://ow.ly/38tD
  • Saskboy · 7 months ago
Perhaps embedding diminishes the viral effect?
  • @MattWilsontv · 7 months ago
It's funny to see that most viral videos used to be short. This one was 7 minutes or so.

Also interesting that out of the 4 videos on your chart, each one was produced by mainstream media. Producers of content need to stop crying and realize that when their content goes viral online, they can still make money!

Do people ever put commercials in the middle of their youtube videos?
  • Adam Ostrow · 7 months ago
good point about the long length , does make it even more impressive
  • Frank Sinton · 7 months ago
Hi Adam - is this counting just YouTube views, or across all sites? Incredible - love it.

Also, Yahoo has an embeddable version, and it is pretty good quality. We have it here:

This really is sort of a perfect storm with a great back story & performance, maybe the perfect song to complement her story, some well-conceived clip editing by the show's producers and then all of it happening at a moment in time when the social media wave is cresting so highly.
  • Mike Mella · 7 months ago
I can't believe my mom knew about this phenomenon before I did.
  • facebook-519888768 · 7 months ago
    same, it was pretty wierd
  • markharrison04 · 7 months ago
I watched it with my family on Saturday and whilst she was very good, the reaction to this has gone way over the top and some comments I have read today have stated that she is one of the greatest singers ever!
  • GL · 7 months ago
I have to agree with you.
  • sonia · 7 months ago
your comment DOES NOT count. Are you jealous? the world knows who Susan Boyle is - we don't give a damn who you are. I am from Barbados
  • markharrison04 · 7 months ago
And why would we care that you are from Barbados? I am entitled to my opinion which means my comment does count or do you not preach democracy in Barbados?
  • Bano · 7 months ago
Wow!! Great news. I was compelled to watch her performance again and again on all the repeat shows on ITV2 and then found it had found its way onto YouTube. As a singer I was always aware of all the talented singers with professional training who are never discovered. Susan Boyles is one of them and I am very pleased for her.
  • Spin · 7 months ago
What's so appealing about this is it tugs at your heart and the genuine wish of everyone to have a "Susan Boyle" moment.

Few mvids can you share with your friends as well as your parents or Grandparents for that matter. This one, transcends age, gender, race, religion, everything. If you don't feel joy and are blown away by this performance than you don't have a heart.
    Go Susan!
  • Nasir Rasheed · 7 months ago
Susan Boyle's rise while impressive wont, i think last, as I think pop media consumers will move onto the next "sensation" to hit the "airwaves".
  • iris hunter · 7 months ago
People of all ages will flock to hear Susan Boyle sing. Every kind of music has its own niche, this genre of music is loved by as many people who like pop/rock, there is a place for all kinds of music. I love Susan, an ordinary woman with amazing talent. Cinderella story. Don't change unless its what you want.
  • Jason Barone · 7 months ago
You're right about pop media. But here's the key that Adam mentioned: "Meanwhile, if and when Boyle decides to jump into social media for herself, she’ll have a built in audience of millions of fans hanging on her every word"

She's already got a huge following and huge support. She's already a success.
  • shaun gisbourne · 7 months ago
Witnessing this brought tears of joy and an overwhelming sense of justice. For far too long the music industry has thrust style over substance into our faces, and it has sold.

Susan is up there with the very best (including Elaine Page). Sincerely hope that she has a very long career in front of her doing what she truly was put on this earth to do.

She never gave up on the dream, why should anyone else?
  • cheryl whiting · 7 months ago
i think susan is an angel, her voice the same.never judge some-one by their looks,it is whats inside that makes a person who they are and what they are.I hope susan becomes what i think she already is a STAR.God nless her all the way
  • Sheila Oldfield · 7 months ago

  • iris hunter · 7 months ago
Singers suck as Britney Spears and the like might sound great to you on CD's but they cannot sing live, witness all the lipsincing. The sound technology in the studios is what makes their sound, not talent. You could not pay me to listen to these people

I agree with Vinve -- Susan is great, and I like the come-from-behind, don't-judge-a-book-by-its-cover vibe that she embodies, but hearing Paul Potts singing "Nessun Dorma" gives me goose pimples every single time.

IMO the video that made people really realize the strength of a viral video was "Lazy Sunday". Still one of my all-time favorite videos.
  • Bruce · 7 months ago
Susan Boyle nailed that song. With all respect to Elaine Paige, Susan now owns that song.

    Awesome! You GO, girl!
  • Sue Thompson · 7 months ago
I was so impressed with Susan's performance that I have played it daily since her debut. She really is a star in my mind and I hope that she will continue to enjoy success in the days, weeks, months and years ahead. Congratulations Susan.

What is happening here is a whole load of people are going:

"wow, an ugly old woman can sing"

That's all it is people... there are a load of glowing interpretations as to what this "means"... but it's from a game show that has something of the freak-show about it. That's all it is, and you're all falling neatly into line.
  • Paul Drakeford · 7 months ago
Nick your grammar needs some attention. The subject and the verb should agree. A load is singular. A load of people IS going ... And ... there IS a load of of glowing interpretations. You may have to stay in after school.
  • Your Name* · 7 months ago
The most amazing thing about Susan Boyle's performance was how quickly the panel and audience responded. Just watch their expressions and note the sound levels. After she had sung the first 5 or 6 words of "Dream". Susan's life had changed completely, forever. We saw a miracle on stage in less than 5 seconds. Try telling the millions of people who have seen this that she isn't a huge talent. They will laugh at you, just as as the original audience's attitude changed from mockery to laughter and tears of joy.
  • GL · 7 months ago
That is the most amazing thing about it. It almost seems.....

In these troubled times I worry about a lot of things. But when Susan Boyle sang, I got a smile a mile wide and had tears streaming swon my cheeks. She stood there and everyone was smirking. Then she sang. We all needed this womans singing. In a world full of plastic bull s--t she is the real thing. Don't make her over. Hold her up to the world to see a REAl woman who sings form her heart. Keep on singing Susan, Thank you.
  • budi1001 · 7 months ago
I have to support Vinve P's comment here: Paul Potts' performance of Nessun Dorma was a way bigger hit. You don't actually have to take into account any reproductions of the original version to reach almost 47 million views. I personally believe Paul to be a much bigger wonder than Susan but, decide on your own (http://tinyurl.com/2agwpt).

To Nick Taylor,,,, you're dead wrong, I actually heard this clip on the radio, with out hearing or seeing what she looked like and was amazed at how god she could sing. It was 2 days later that I actually saw the video of her performance, so for me it was all about her voice!!!!

Susan Boyle: With her frumpy dress and fuzzy hair and eyebrows, white pumps and dark stockings -- she has with grace and spunk thrown all that unfounded derision and condescension that people showed her in the first few minutes of laying eyes on her TO THE DOGS! Susan Boyle opened her mouth and God came out. He put millions to shame and brought out their better sides all within the span of a few short minutes. Susan has done her mother proud and she has proven beyond all doubt that God IS, that prayers work, that staying strong and having faith one's self IS also having faith in what God created. Go Girl!! I'm one of your million new supporters! You are BEAUTIFUL!

Alongside all the circumstantial differences - most people will have watched Obama on TV and it was 20 minutes, not 3 minutes - there is also a truth about how both of these feel good videos turn so many people on. And neatly placed between them is the attraction of one woman totally trashing another, in the form of Tina Fey on Sarah Palin. What do they all have in common? Youtube describes the landscape of emotions across the connected world like no other. Where do these hits measure up to sex and violence videos?
  • indraadnan · 7 months ago
Also, it wasn't long ago that most artists and musicians were saying, 'there will never be another Beatles because no-one can take over the global media in the same way again. The Boyle phenomenon challenges that but also makes me wonder, what new technology is round the corner that will be EVEN MORE pervasive?

I love watching her and listening to her. She's such a real person. What makes me so mad about this whole thing is that in the eyes of others, she had no real "value" as a person until she showed she had talent. Why does everyone have to be young and beautiful before they're respected?
  • Skip Fredricks · 7 months ago
You said, "not to mention (mainstream media)" it was all main stream media, as a matter of fact in each of your examples of the top You Tube Viral Videos, it was the mainstream media that pushed the awareness of this. The News, Good Morning America, Yahoo's Main Page, Saturday Night Live for Palin, All the news media outlets for the Presidents Speech. Really has there been one instance when a viral video has spread at those levels without the mainstream media providing on the fuel. I am a TV Producer and New Media executive, lets face it on its worse night 90210 does 2.5 million viewers. Most On-Line Videos, that are not Professional TV shows, repurposed on-line take months to hit those numbers. Lets face it, for it to be a mega hit, Main Stream Media, produces it, and promotes it. By the way she is amazing.

This survey must surely show that we are sick of Palin, Bush, Obama et al and need some hope and inspiration that only our compatriot commoners are capable of providing. Screw MSNBC, ABC, the NYT, etc; I want some news that makes me want to be a better person instead of pissung me off. God bless ITV's Brits Got Talent, I have spent hours surfing the acts on Week One and ignoring the shopworn American news. Good luck to Susan Boyle, Stavros Flatly, Good Evans, and Flawless.... and how can I access ITV in the USA??????? Love you Scots, you rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Why so popular?

Apart from the fact the girl can sing! It's also about how the clip was edited and put together, it has all the elements of great story telling and movie making. Set the scene, introduce the characters and problem, create the conflict points and character arcs, deliver the twist and finally the resolution. From a technical point of view - professionally produced, great music, professional editing and very clear messaging.

But not every Hollywood picture wins an Oscar - so what makes a good story?
    Universal Truths

A good story has to touch our hearts, to create an emotional response, something we can relate to and can embrace. If we are moved enough we are compelled to comment, blog, share the experience (or buy/ complain). In advertising and marketing there is nothing more powerful then trusted referral and word of mouth to drive your brand influence.

A happy customer tells three and an unhappy one x10!

Interestingly, Les Mis was first panned by the critics back in '85 but acheived success through a groundswell of word of mouth support and went on to international acclaim, countless awards and still runs today in Londons East End.

As we know in todays online media world, referral is as simple as a click but the key here is that the content has to be worth watching and of value to the reader (we've all known those web newbies that feel compelled to mass send those chain letters, virus alerts and cute cat photos).

With online, email, search and social networks like Twitter and Facebook, your readers decide if they want to know more and click in contrast to the old shotgun interupt and repeat rules of conventional advertising - but don't get me wrong, television is still the 800 pound guerilla of video where most people spend their leisure time. For finding information, sharing and creating for media the web rules.

The quality of your blog, your tweets, your photos, your videos all count. What you say matters to building your brand, your subscribers and influence. In the online world we are not all professional writers, journalists, musicans and film makers. We don't have to look pretty nor have the family connections to achieve success. Like singing in the village and being rediculed by the local kids - its your creativity and passion that matters.

It will be interesting to see the BGT's TV ratings this week, the advertising rate card and to personally watch the rise and rise of Susan Boyle (rock on chick!)

    Cheers
    Maxy

At a time of world economic meltdown, slave like reverence to the physically attractive and the international terrorist situation, it is remarkable to discover that wondrous undiscovered ability exists in the most unlikely of places. Let's not forget Susan is 47 years old, her rare talent has gone undiscovered largely for all that time. Now finally she is in a position to live her own life, for herself, let's wish her every success AND happiness.

I believe most any makeover would be an injustice to her uniqueness!!! Maybe a couple touch-ups, but not too polished of a look. I don't recall anyone wanting to makeover Jimmy Durante, Rodney Dangerfield or Don Rickles and they were all famous in their own right, just to name a few.

I'm in the army and I saw the news flash of Susan Boyle. It took a while to download and when I saw it, it brought tears to my eyes. I have watched it probably 20 times and it is great to see a middle-aged public servant's dream come true. What an amazing voice with incredible talent. I like your post here on Susan Boyle whose happy in her own skin personality
is part of her Universal appeal as well as her wonderful singing. As she has now passed the 100,000,000 mark on the Internet et al. we can pretty much take it for granted that
we will be hearing much more of her in the future.:-D.
I listened to her rendition of "Cry me a River"made a few years back and it was unbelievably beautiful. What a nice change from so many young "singers" and others today who make sounds like they have just sat on a tack and look pained enough to have actually done so, as they gyrate in sinc.

I think most photoes and interviews are old hat by now as Simon Cowell has stepped in and given her a personal security guard as well has spirited her away to a safe house with one of her relatives. Now that is a relief I was worried she might become the victim of some nutter if she didn't stop opening her door to anyone who appeared on her doorstep asking for her autograph and an interview!A young couple said she was easy to find all they had to do was drive around her home town and look for her house. Only top rated journalists are allowed to interview her now and then only for 20 mionutes complaining they get 45 mins.with top stars .It is such a relief after a couple of videos I saw by some pesky reporter who interviewed her and tried to make a like a fool. And you say here she gets death threats, yipes! There a some really sick people around just as I thought. Thank goodness they are a very small minority.Keep Susan safe Simon Cowell.

Susan Boyle gave an example of how senseless our paradigms of beauty are. I was so happy to see the faces of those that put you down at the beginning, (those girls). You knocked us all out! God Bless You Susan Boyle, do not let any dirty hands touch you. You are so beautiful! The best of luck for you foerever.

She is simply a beautiful person with a voice to be reckoned with. Susan is so honest about her desires to just be able to sing for the Queen. I hope notoriety does not change her innocence for that is what gives her that sweet aura. Her voice is so pure and I want to hear it for years to come.I wish her the best for the finals.

Susan is the best! Even if she does not win the final, she has won anyway.
    Best wishes always to her!

That is "the" most surprising, unlikely, most amazing performance I have ever heard. It made me very emotional and so happy for Susan. Susan I know you will go far and I am SO pleased for you, go on you can do it!!!!!!!!!!

I "cried a river" when I saw and heard Susan Boyle sing "I dreamed a dream." I am 55 years old and she inspired me so very much. All my husband here from me these days is Susan,Susan,Susan. I am multi-racial, and love Michell Obama, but given the choice to meet either, I would definately choose Susan Boyle because "She's every woman". Susan you are always in my prayers. You dream has become a reality. God has blessed you for your devotion and love you gave to your mom and dad.

Susan Boyle is, in my estimation, a fabulous find in Great Britain. I am stunned that she has been put through the wringer in the media. She may not be beautiful as the world sees beauty (as perfection of face and form}. But her beauty shines from within: her smile is wonderful, her spirit shines through, and her voice entrances and thrills with its richness, tone and emotion. When many others would have given up because of the negative attention, she had enough courage to perform in the Britain's Got Talent finals with grace, a lovely smile and she did it superbly. She truly answered her critics.

"I dreamed a dream" is such a beautiful and meaningful song, but even though I saw a professional performance of "Les Miserables" in America last summer, none of the music was memorable to me. Totally disappointed, I left the theater wondering what the fuss was all about. Susan Boyle had only sung a few notes of that wonderful song and I found myself thrilled beyond measure. She is a sensation and I, for one, will buy any CD she makes. I want to hear her voice forever. Susan Boyle has dreamed a dream and though she came in second in Britain's Got Talent, she has achieved that dream. Bravo!

    An American fan.

I love Susan's voice! Can't wait for an album!

You can take Susan Boyle and give me Kevin Skinner - he's got more talent in that broad country voice than Susan Boyle has in her entire body! He deserves to be AMERICA'S TALENT RATHER THAN BRITISH IMPORT. WE LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY YEARS AGO AND REMEMBER THE SHOW IS 'AMERICA'S GOT TALENT"NOT ENGLAND"!

Never heard such a beautiful untrained voice....... Susan has a talent that can not be surpassed. Just hope the media does not ruin her.

I, too, cannot get enough of Susan Boyle, however, friends and I were terribly turned off by "riske" acts of some other participants on America's got Talent's finale, and turned to another channel. Too bad, AGT could be such a role model for true talent, without that stuff. One female performer looked like she was having sex with some of the scenery. UGH!!! Back to Susan, hope that someone will put together a super DVD of her singing. I also hope that people won't take advantage of her...I think she is absolutely tremendous just as she is!!! You rock, Girl! I wish you the very best.

Susan Boyle may be a star, but she doesn't outshine Kevin Skinner (in my opinion) winner of America's Got Talent. Not only is he talented, but a great human being as well.!
