Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Susan Boyle Sings Memory on Britain’s Got Talent [YouTube Video]

  • joahna · 6 months ago
Absolutely lovely! that is a hard song to sing, I can tell.
  • zbowling · 6 months ago
this song isn't as good as the last.
  • WeeWifie · 6 months ago
I was worried in the first half... was not keen at all, I thought she was crashing with the nerves. However half way through the nerves melted away and out came that voice...!! Way to go Susan
  • Leonid S. Knyshov · 6 months ago
I really love Cats and have several versions of this song.

That being said, this was absolutely not a world-captivating rendition. She set the bar far too high with the previous performance. :)

I further reviewed the song. She starts singing at 2:20. At 1:34 and at 1:58 I cringed (she said and not sang "a memory too"). ITV needs to post an HD clip of this.

My preferred version is performed by Sarah Brightman, specifically performed simultaneously in English and Italian. Then again, this is not fair - Sarah is a multi-platinum singer. :) Elaine Page also absolutely masters this song in her live 1998 recording. Again, not a fair comparison.

I believe Susan is a multi-platinum star once she gets used to the global spotlight.

MASHABLE: this is not the official clip. It contains a link to some commercial video.

This is the official clip (from ITV) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SncyQKe6CnQ

    Leo,

So here's the issue: rather stupidly, Britain's Got Talent created different versions of the video for different countries. The one you link to only works in the US, but we have an international audience who wouldn't be able to view it. I'll dig around and see if there's any official versions that work globally.
  • mashable · 6 months ago
OK, vids from the UK YouTube channel appear to work internationally....switched it out for official version.
  • patricia · 6 months ago
Well there is a video clip of all your preferences posted on utube by a very enterprising
person that compares all the versions by your preferred singers. All excellent in their own right but they lack something when compared to Susan Boyles version. So it is all a matter of preferences and you are entitled to yours ofcourse. I prefer Susan Boyle to all of them.

Sounded nervous at the beginning but got into the song later. Me likey.

Though a little off here and there, overall, I loved her again.

    Still shy...still humble...still one of us...still sensational...best of all...she's still Susan!!!
  • Midy · 6 months ago
Have to agree that this song was not as appropriate for her voice range as the first one. However, it doesn't really matter. The world already knows and loves her - for her spirit, talent and humility. Picking the right song for the next show will be critical. After all, 100,000 Quid are on the line :) Thought her hair and makeup looked absolutely fantastic!
  • brenda from canada · 6 months ago
Susan said she was nervous walking out as she had a near fall in rehearsal with new shoes and they took the shoes and prepared them so she would not slip and she had not tried them out before going to the stage for her performance...thus she looked a bit nervous or stiff at first..but just before she got to the mic she smiled. She had a cold and her voice cracked at the beginning and got her ..frog ..out of her throat.....but I was so impressed with her range of voice..made me cry again. I hope she goes forward and can't wait for her live performance or her cd's....God bless you Susan
  • lorenep · 6 months ago
She is good, but is she really the best singer on the show? I woud love to hear what Simon had to say about that performance. On American Idol he would have torn her up for being off key, off tempo and for choosing such a common song that has been done way better than that.
  • Leonid S. Knyshov · 6 months ago
Simon actually avoided judging her. Instead, he apologized to her. The clip has been replaced by Mashable, and you can see the judging now. Simon is a very smart person, so he realized that judging her would not improve the show. He found a way to avoid giving a negative critique and turned it into a positive event for himself and the show. :)
  • pksnow · 6 months ago
Just wonderful..when can we buy her CD ?!!!!!!!
  • Sibkiss · 6 months ago
    I was not impressed.

She did look nice but she has to do better than that to be in the running to win the competition, and I think it is just a matter of getting her butterflies to fly in formation. I am a singer also, and I could tell she was so nervous that she was unable to sing/breath properly.
  • pennsyltucky · 6 months ago
Susan was definitely blessed with an angelic voice.
  • Joe Styer · 6 months ago
A lot of great talent this year on Britain's got Talent. She is a fan favorite, so I am very curious how this all plays out. Thanks for posting the Video.
  • pennsyltucky · 6 months ago
Why does society have to be so critical about every little thing they can find wrong with another human being. Every one has their good points and bad points. No one is perfect. She was definately blessed with a beautiful voice!! You go Susan!!!
  • M Brand · 6 months ago
It's amazing what she can do. It's getting a bit boring though...
  • Bill · 6 months ago
The key was too low for Susan's voice. The moment that the key changed, half-way through the abbreviated version os the song, Susan burst out with clear, powerful notes that would get the audience going again...in "memory" of the first time they saw her. Susan's voice cracked on the opening note but the disappointing part was the arrangement to follow. The tempo and the delivery of the lyrics were not close to the original composer's intent. If done as the song was written, and raised at least a full step, Susan would have built the anticipation further.
Whoever is fooling with this woman's natural talent, and with the music arrangements, it just
getting in her way. Let SUSAN sing!
  • darkchild · 6 months ago
dissapointed, it lacked the edge of a semi final performance, it was just ordinary. ..for a minute i wondered what the fuss was all about.... overall a lacklustre semi- final
  • marja · 6 months ago
I really didn't think that this was very good, especially the first half which was quite pitchy. Last time she sang well, but the amazing effect she had on people was mostly a result of the fact that most people expected a complete flop (which turned out not to be the case at all). I honestly hope that she does well for herself but judging by professional standards, she's really not that great.
  • Susan · 6 months ago
Susan is a songbird! Lovely, well done...We love you across the pond!
  • MC · 6 months ago
I've gotta agree with much of the commentary that it wasn't a fantastic choice of song - obviously Susan loves musical theater but I've always thought "Memories" was a little boring melodically. She obviously couldn't do Les Mis again though I'd love to hear her rendition of "A Little Fall of Rain." What about something like "Beauty and the Beast?" I think she could kill it and she's totally a Mrs. Potts character...
  • John · 6 months ago
Or something like 'Music of the Night' (Phantom of the Opera) would have really gotten the audience on their feet.
  • MC · 6 months ago
    that's a great suggestion
  • mg · 6 months ago

I still don't get your shoehorning of a YouTube video as a social media story...
  • mashable · 6 months ago
How is it that YouTube's biggest video star to date and Twitter's most discussed topic for a weeklong period (returning to prominence yet again this week), plus one of the most frequently Dugg topics during its pinnacle, is not a relevant topic to social media users?
  • Liz Horsfall · 6 months ago
How an anyone say she is not pretty - her latest performance Memories not only gave me goosepimples again but that lovely smiling face and her overall persona is a pleasure to watch. She has great dignity and an unassuming manner - her voice says it all - I could listen to her for hours.
  • sunnygrl · 6 months ago

Dear Susan, I pray you read these. You fill my heart with joy and hope for humanity each time I hear you sing. I would love to hear you sing " I Will Always Love You " written by Dolly Parton, recorded by Whitney Houston. Your Fan, GngstrOlove.....

Susan is pure clean musical decency. No sexual gyrations, no slushy melodic slurring, no look-at-me narcissism. Just a plain beautiful sound born out of a heart that expresses the sheer joy of singing and the fulfillment of watching people enjoy the same. Some of this creation's deepest beauty comes out of the simplest packages. The chortling robin, the delicate violet, the fresh spring rain. Don't let popularity corrupt you, Susan. Stay beautiful. Stay clean!
  • Carl Reasor · 6 months ago
What a magnificiently beautiful voice, such strength, tone and range. She is utterly amazing.
    Thank you for this presentation.
  • Polina · 6 months ago
Look it wasn't a tear jerker this time but, we all know what Susan can do. She did the best she could under all that pressure and high expectation to do better than the first time. You could tell it was nerve racking for her and at times she was rushing through the song. All in all she was able to pull it off to be in the finals and that is what matters most. By the way Susan, you looked marvelous tonight! You go Susan....the world is rooting for you to win the 2009 BGT.
  • ellen · 6 months ago
Shaky start but still that marvelous voice emerges. She is a star - she must begin to record for the public. We want more Susan Boyle.

Susan boyle, you have the best voice I've ever heard in my life & I've been around a long time
  • Jane · 6 months ago
Dear Susan...You sing like an angel! Outstanding performance. Your stage presence and beautiful voice reminds me of two very fine artists, Beverly Sills and Kate Smith. You are like them, a true performing vocalist, a pleasure to see and hear perform. No one is turning up the key in a sound system, to make you sound good. You are beautiful in every way. Please don't change. I hope and pray that your wish will come true, to sing for the Queen. No one deserves that wish to come true more than you.
  • Carol · 6 months ago
From the growing negative comments I have just read about Ms. Boyle's rendition of "Memories" I can see the proverbvial witch-hunt has started. Why can't people just enjoy and appreciate her untainted talent and the joy she has brought to millions instead of becoming the "bullies" who have tortured her the majority of her life?
  • arlene · 6 months ago
I don't think the majority of us are looking for a "witch hunt", I just think she wasn't as good with this performance as she was with the Les Mes song. Still a beautiful voice and I hope she does well in the finals.

Had I not heard Susan sing before this song I would say she would not make it to the finals. Her voice was off key and she lacked the self confidence she displayed with her first appearance. Good luck to you Susan1
  • Marty · 6 months ago
She was so scared in the beginning..
No wonder. I don't know of anyone that ever had so much pressure on them.
But once she got going, she did a wonderful job.

Susan Boyle what an incredible voice,so refreasing to listen to you.Best Wishes to you
  • John · 6 months ago
This is a case of the Emperor's New Clothes. People are so blinded by the Susan Boyle phenomenon that they don't recognise this for the mediocre performance it was. The judges comments were obviously prepared in advance, otherwise Simon for one would have picked up on the very shaky first 30 seconds.

I wondered if Susan Boyle is a one-trick-pony, now I'm starting to think she is. And what's the trick? Everyone's shock, surprise, and emotive response to the first time she walked on stage in the auditions.

But the public are a fickle bunch, easily bored.

Now that we've all seen that first performance and have gotten over the initial 'surprise factor', the act has been stripped down to what it really is; an average woman with an average voice.

I believe that this song was not as good as the last one, but of course that would be hard to do. I've listened to that song dozens of times. I guess the song didn't suit her well. It's a hard song to sing for sure.
Something has to be done about her teeth if she is going to continue singing on camera though, they looked all yellow.

Why is a third class TV actress allowed to voice judgement about people's talent, along with a disgraced junk tabloid editor (singing? piers?? amanda??? can you sing one note??? ever been to the opera? intricacies of voice and high acting... amanda X wouldn't know about it for sure....), judging appearance, general worthiness, dress sense (look at you, cowell, and your high trousers), etc. on prime-time TV? Yeah, I know, you're not following - too much punctuation.... This is Little Britain in full swing. Thank God I'm leaving the country.....

"I wanted you to move around a bit more.... naughty boy" - How ridiculously lame that is from an actress who isn't even on imdb???

she was nervous at the start but recovered quickly into it---how great is that? I'd really like to see her sing a broadway show with American Idol's Adam Lambert---who really is incredible in that setting also. How great would that be---two relative unknowns vaulted to stardom on their talents? What a great spring this has been, thanks to them.....

With all the publicity she has received, it isn't any wonder how she started off so nervously. But, she regained her composure and ended off with an absolute bang. It's the people in this world that, like susan boyle, we don't pay a notice to that come out and surprise us and give us a tingle because they show us how remarkable we all can be on the inside. I got a tingle of extreme joy when she hit the high, powerful notes at the end of the performance. I am happy and proud for her.

True there was a small glitch at the beginning, but then that beautiful voice was heard. Why must she be compared to others or judged for her naivete. She is a sweet wholesome person who merely has a dream that is well deserved. The ones who continue to malign her are narrow-minded at best. She will continue to cheer those who believe in her and win over those who do not.

I was happy with Susan's performance, even with a false start. Considering all the pressure on her, so did extraordinary well.. This is a shorted version of the video that show that on stage apology of Simon. For you grumps - her first performance was unexpected, so of course we were all Wowed. Now we know what she is capable of so we are a bit more critical.

Susan Boyle - Like so many others around the world, I am cheering for you. Your successes make me believe that, as long as you never give up, you can show everyone that you have amazing gifts to share, even when life hasn't offered you many opportunities to showcase them.

omg, I cant believe people actually like this woman, there are people in this world who take time and training to get to respected positions in the musical world. People like this woman make a joke out of those who really try. Yes she can sing; so can millions of people. The only reason people think that she is any good is because the media have said so.
I am sorry but her first performance was not wonderful, and blame it on what you will, memory was hideous. She did not support her voice at all for the whole performance, and even after her stumble at the beginging there isn't a huge improvement. There are much better singers out there; and I dont see why this lady should be allowed to waltz in and take the spotlight they so rightly deserve. Sorry to anyone who this may have offended, i.e. anyone who listens to what the media say rather than what their ears tell them; but she is not worthy of the final of any competition, especially not a talent one... however that 12y/o can really do it if he wants. my only concern with him is that he will damage his voice before long.

Outside of the very first words in that song which I have heard many times sung. That is the best version I have ever heard of that sung by Susan Boyles. Before Susan sung that song I never liked it by any other person.

I just listen to to Elaine and Barbara sing this song and Susan rocks, almost as good as Barbara and beats Elaine. This is a very hard song. Great job Susan

I agree, hard song to sing. But where does she fit in main stream media? I can't imagine most people putting this on their Ipod, am I wrong?

This performance wasn't as good as her first one, bit scratchy at the start, but overall, I think she did a good job. People can comment on how well she did or didn't do, but it was not any of us that was standing up there belting out a tune. We could pick holes in her performance till the cows come home, at the end of the day our opinions don't really matter. Susan Boyle is a great singer and I think she could go on to become something really big. People love her and want to see her succeed and win BGT and good on them. I hope she wins lol.

What a voice!! What a talent!! Susan Boyle, an Angel from Heaven, came before us and soothed all our frazzled nerves what with the economy going downhill and the war and its terrible casualties. I hope she makes albums and cds so that we can all buy them and just listen to her singing. She is an unbelievable and talented woman and we all love her so very much. God bless Susan Boyle!
