Whether it was social or business or both. I am 45 and only on Facebook 3 months. Sorta covered Myspace for 2yrs only to watch my kids pages. Def love FB in comparison. My question is if there were say a top 5 list of things you could get from all of the social media sites in one place...What would they be? What 5 things would you want all in one social media site?

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

Bingo! Couldn't have said it better. The key in James' comment is "value", and I suspect because of the way Linkedin is marketed and presented, it is that much simpler to recognize it's intrinsic value.

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

Great post. Quantcast is probably a more accurate as each page must be added by the site owners sysadmin to accurately measure performance. Good call.

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

This post hits the issue on the head: there's always good news mixed in with the bad. It’s difficult to get accurate statistics these days unless you’re part of the company itself with access to the hard data.

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

At least in the Northeast, August had the best weather by far (June was completely rained out). A good sign people got outside a bit for some fresh air.

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

I think LinkedIn definitely will continue to grow as college students graduate and are entering the work force. This also causes a shift from Facebook usage, as many employers check Facebook first to find out more about a potential employee (which can hurt many looking for a job, which is causing the shift from Facebook to LinkedIn). The drop makes sense, I bet this isn't the end of the Facebook usage contraction, but rather just the beginning. Just my two cents

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

LinkedIn is positioned well for the current economic climate. Lots of people are turning to social media as a good way to find a job and LinkedIn is one of the least threatening options. From my experience, many people from older generations more easily grasp the value proposition of LinkedIn and it is the first social networking site they will consider joining.

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

That is a good pointed. I'm sure that facebook connect played a huge factor in digg's growth. I think that twitter and facebook's somewhat stagnant stats are nothing to worry about and I'm sure that we will see a rise again this month now that we don't have another holiday until Thanksgiving. People are going to be looking on twitter and facebook pages for great holiday deals!

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

I agree with Lee. I think that is definitely a factor in LinkedIn. Since LinkedIn is a professional networking site, then people looking for jobs will definitely use it. I think what makes it work is that it's very hard to fake a linkedin account compared to other social media sites and you will only accept people you know. At the same time, it remains very professional. The way it's modeled and used are very specific for business and professional purposes.

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

Here's a thought regarding LinkedIn (and links with what I've seen happening in my 'network). A lot of people have recently graduated university and are on the look for jobs - are these graduates looking towards sites like LinkedIn to assist with this? If they are then it would make sense for LinkedIn to continue to grow in the time slot after graduations as graduates push to look for jobs.

I've certainly seen 5 people add me to their network in the last month. This may not sound like many, but previous to this I only had 3 people in my network since I had joined the service.

Re: STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

does anyone know if digg grew because it implemented Facebook Connect?
