I've suferred from asthma since I was 13 years old and it really makes life hard when on certain days you want to have a trip but the weather makes it hard to breathe. I hope this catches on. It would be great to have in the UK and it would help plan things out for hikes etc.

Re: Social Networks to Be Used for Asthma Alerts

Actually, this would be great. :)

Re: Social Networks to Be Used for Asthma Alerts

good idea! twitter has ended up being a valuable tool for things like this.

Re: Social Networks to Be Used for Asthma Alerts

It is a good idea, especially if it "nudges" everyone to keep the inhaler and medication close on risky days. I am just wondering if there are any particular 'social factors' that are / could be useful here? Lets face it, a simple SMS with high, medium, low, or actual pollen count number could be nearly 100% distribution, passive, and not annoying. Serious sufferers will have their own "strong plans" in place in terms of communications.

Re: Social Networks to Be Used for Asthma Alerts

This sounds like a great idea, but the curmudgeon in me can't help thinking that Phillip K. Dick got it right. It is a short step from general alerts to individual alerts, and from there to individual government nagging. Will I get reminded to wear a hat when it gets cold? Did I wash my hands before leaving the public restroom?

Re: Social Networks to Be Used for Asthma Alerts

Hats off to the Arizona health officials for taking the initiative with the asthma alert system. This is an excellent way to reach out to their constituents quickly and effectively. I look forward to seeing more healthcare organizations optimize the use of this new medium to help improve the healthcare of all.
