Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Social Media + Wearing Shirts = Lucrative Career?

  • Adria Richards · 3 months ago
Jason Sadler is selling out by pushing real estate, baby food, lawn care, shoes, iPhone apps, a human kidney, software and calling cards.

I started my Ustream channel in December, around the same time Jason was rounding up buyers for his spots in 2009 on this concept. I observed how he was going about it and decided it lacked integrity.

He doesn't understand the products he promotes and his idea is not unique as there's http://girl.inyourshirt.tv

What good is this sort of advertising if you put Jason in front of an audience and he can't speak about your product past the 30 second pitch you emailed him?

I'm taking a different route for http://askadria.com where I focus on explaining business technology in easy to understand terms for companies, IT techies and website developers so when I go to conferences, people and sponsors recognize I know my stuff. I explore technology on http://butyoureagirl.com with a focus on people who need to start using technology n-o-w.

Although I'm just starting to look for sponsors now, the body of work I have built up online through videos and posts establishes value in the eyes of those potential sponsors. I find my future as a speaker, trainer and tech blogger bright...without having to sellout and promote stuff I don't understand or care about.

Plus, people say I'm fun and wild (in a good way) at conferences!

I really liked the catchy name name butyouragirl.com so I clicked over to take a look (I hardly ever click from comments). What a great surprise ! Nice site and nice simple articles. Reading "How neighbors punk your WIIFII" now.

http://twitter.com/girlinyourshirt is the come back kid. She's going to take a new approach and has some great things that will be coming up that are unique and ahead of the game in a big way.
  • mint collective · 3 months ago
this girl does the same thing! http://girl.inyourshirt.tv/
  • April Mraz · 3 months ago
Yeah, but nearly as effectively as Jason.
  • inspiredworlds · 3 months ago
why would people watch this and pay for this? its just advertising. these guys are walking billboards. what unique content are they offering? its like watching commercial after commercial!

good on them for making so much money by wearing tshirts though!
  • doug r · 3 months ago
Isn't this the definition of whore?
  • ChrisCavs · 3 months ago
i don't think these guys are compromising themselves in any way that would be too harmful. They're certainly not selling themselves sexually for money. They may be "selling out" in a sense, but no, they're not "whores."
  • thebumofhollywoodbeach · 3 months ago
if you think about it, their clients are whores, you and i are johns, and these guys are pimps...
  • April Mraz · 3 months ago
So everyone who works for someone else is a whore? Come on, think about that for a second. Jason has singlehandedly created a new revenue stream for advertising. And it's working. Kudos to him!
  • ChrisCavs · 3 months ago
and now that it's been done, very few people will be able to do it again. and so another bright idea will go down the intertubez.
  • Melanie · 3 months ago
    Agreed!
  • Emma James · 3 months ago
Absolutely hilarious - what a smooth marketing ploy because the spin offs are potentially enormous. The format will get tired eventually but I've no doubt Jason will cook up a new wheeze. I watched this video in its entirity but there's no way I'd put it on my daily shopping list.

He and Evan work quite well together too and that can only deepen as Evan works it.
  • Evan · 3 months ago
Whore? My mom is gunna be so pissed when she sees that!
  • dangrossman · 3 months ago
I wear company t-shirts almost every day for free...

And what's up with his sick day policy? He says he'll just wear a shirt so there's no reason for one. If he's actually stuck in bed, then how does that advertise anyone? If he can't get up then how's he going to take a video of it?
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 3 months ago
If you read the article, it states that he wears the teeshirts and posts pictures on his account at various popular social networking sites - which generates a lot of exposure. So he could take a sick day, as long as he makes sure to post those pictures!
  • allproactive · 3 months ago
Well done! BTW, I'm putting dibs on iwearyourhat, iwearyoursocks and iputyourlicenseplateholderonmycar. Have fun you guys and "sell out" all the way to a Hawaiian vacation!
  • Joshua Arnao · 3 months ago
You need to watch some of the other videos, some funny stuff. What I like about these guys is there honesty,if a product is lacking you know about it and if it's great you have proof enough to buy it. This is one of the most original and brilliant ideas on the interwebs.
  • Heather Henderson · 3 months ago
damn, i had this exact same idea a while ago. i made a website and everything but it never took off. probably because of this guy.
  • bryanz · 3 months ago
It is a cool, novel idea but I doubt the scalability of it. Obviously on a day-by-day basis it's not a huge cost for marketing, especially initially, but is having two people wear the shirts actually twice as effective (and twice as costly as a result)?
  • Tech Nerd · 3 months ago
I may as well screen print my own shirt

  • Dante St James · 3 months ago
Brilliant idea. I wish I had thought of it first.
  • MitchMahoney · 3 months ago
i think this project is completely excellent.
    it's creating values for @yourfriendevan + @iwearyourshirts
while creating values for every shirt owner at the same time!

i'm going to talk to these guys and book my position for them to wear one of my shirts from euphoric. you can check them out at http://www.mitchmahoney.com/?p=237
  • Alex · 3 months ago
If you look at the stats on their YouTube page they're in the low hundreds. Am I missing something? While we're not talking tons of money I thought the exposure advertisers got would be 10x that and I would speculate YouTube gets the majority of that traffic.

Clever idea though, and scaling pricing model is great.
  • Kyle · 3 months ago
Shoemaker does something similar to this it's called free shirt Fridays. I wonder who had the idea first?
  • wtf · 3 months ago
Seriously. why would a want some random completely unknown average dude wearing a t-shirt with my logo on it?

And why would anyone care if they saw it?

Only in America as the say. Pfftt.
  • wtf · 3 months ago
    Absolute wankery.
  • niubi · 3 months ago
LOL, only on the internet. This is a pretty funny way of advertising, but the publicity it generates is worth far more than the 'average dude wears my company's t-shirt' publicity. Sometimes it's all about the stunt, rather than the actual deal. DubLi are trying some pretty zany auction ideas, such as a NY 'spy game' (http://us.dubli.com/The-New-York-Spygame__3_291...) which is going somewhat the way of the tshirt thing.
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 3 months ago
"Sometimes it's all about the stunt.."

    That's exactly it, and a lot of people don't get that. I think it's pretty innovative - and any naysayers are just jealous they didn't think of it first. (;

Finally someone came up with an idea that will be the true new music business model. Get paid to wear t-shirts rather than trying to sell them.
  • Donagh Mc Sweeney · 3 months ago
Simple and unique! I like it!
  • Neil · 3 months ago
    Why's he gonna top himself?
  • Matt Hill · 3 months ago
"We already wonder how he’ll top himself in 2011"

I guess the pressure of wearing all those different t-shirts will eventually make a man suicidal.

A very poor choice of phrase, SmashingMag; time to improve your journalistic vocabulary!
  • Matt Hill · 3 months ago
I clearly read too many sites! Can't tell the difference between SM and Mashable! :-)
  • shonzilla · 3 months ago
Another simple and thus great idea (a la million dollar homepage) that succeeds. Kudos to the man!

  • Jono1980 · 3 months ago
reminds me a bit of the million-dollar-homepage. i think it's a good concept, and clearly it's gained some traction - although i imagine people will get bored of it and lose interest pretty quickly.

love it, hate it, pfft it... IWearYourShirt is successful. Cheers to having an original idea & the focus to follow through... very well done, sir.

Genius! Those who trash talk are simply jealous that they can't get out side the box confining them to the ordinary.

I'm so pumped up about my iwearyourshirt day on November 16th. And, I booked 4 more dates in 2010 including my birthday on September 20th just to celebrate. I believe that Jason and Evan are gonna BAM! Kick it up a few more notches! They are innovative, entertaining, clever, funny and most importantly - they are real. They promote products and services from the heart. You can tell they are authentic. I'm excited for the success of iwearyourshirt and the guys having fun promoting our interactive, online video services at www.GreystoneGreeters.com Let's get ready to have some fun!!!!! All the very best and keep doing what you are doing.
  • RKW · 3 months ago
It doesn't bother me at all. It's unique. They're, clearly, doing a great job marketing it to companies. They're following through: wearing the shirts, doing the YouTube, Ustream and other follow-up. Good for them. It reminds me of that company that was paying people in San Francisco to completely cover their car with an ad. I think the exchange offered was the company covered your car payment or something.

I don't care who they're advertising. It's not going to change how I buy or evaluate products. They're effectively selling their service and that's why they're doing well. They are walking billboards but companies think it's worth a couple of bills or a few to do it. Great for them!

Jason wonderful tshirt wearing human! Me swag eating dinosaur!!

I eat t-shirts for breakfest... Om nom nom nomz

Feed me your delicious swag ... @Swagasaurus
  • bhartzer · 3 months ago
They both deserve a pat on the back for such a great idea. The advertisers are getting a steal even if they had to pay $500 a day for them to wear a shirt.
  • gloria · 3 months ago
wish i had thought if that! thinking outside the box, seems to work !
  • workinggirl · 3 months ago
Sweet idea actually ! So you wear a company T-shirt for a few days and post it. Get paid. Move on. I don't get why people are calling them whores . . . unless they are angry the didn't think of it first (hmmmmm). I say good for them.
  • Rob Bonzetti · 3 months ago
Sad. Are marketers as big a dupes as they assume their target markets are?
  • CellularChloe · 3 months ago
All the naysayers are just jealous they didn't think of it first. Brilliant idea. You are a genius Jason!
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 3 months ago
Oh man, creepy; I said the exact same thing in a reply to someone above! lmao
  • Tony Masinelli · 3 months ago
If you think about it, companies have been paying people for some time to put advertising (either magnetic or vinyl wrap) on their car. This is just an extension of that. And before cars, companies paid people to paint their logo on the side of a barn or other building. It's really not a new idea, just an extension of something that has been around for decades.
  • Dr. Blogstein · 3 months ago
Where was all this coverage on July 28th?!?!? How about saving some of this publicity for January 26th?!?!
  • Shannon Zaher · 3 months ago
Jason rocks! Just wish you would have waited unti tomorrow to post this since Jason will be wearing our spectacular T-Shirt on the 14th. Way to go, Jason.

  • Pliggs · 3 months ago
Look at the jealous people putting these guys down. They had a good idea and it has turned into a nice yearly salary for just wearing a differnet shirt everyday, something we all do anyways, except they get paid for it.

    Good job guys.

I know someone this blog article would appeal to and I passed it on. The product placement deal is a great way to something simple and get paid for it. I would be interesting on how many copycats will try to emulate this.

That IWearYourShirt thing is a pretty cool idea. When i read it i couldnt help think, if thats a cool idea then Twin Power Advertising is an Awesome idea. Every one knows Twins are not forgotten. They create a video of your companies product and share them to their network of over 200,00 eyeballs for a fraction of the price. And its not just some i stand there and talk about your shirt video, these Twins make some cool videos that could create a buzz.

If your a Twin you can make extra money with Twin Power Advertising. As a Twin we are signed up in their network to make some extra income.

The thing that really is rotten about this dude is that he's dishonest. He didn't even sell the show's for most of the year! I've actually spoken with a number of them and he gave them away. LOL. Sad everyone thinks he's making a living and has some sort of business model when he's just putting on a (poor) show.
