Thanks so much for including me on this illustrious list! Sniff ... but in a couple of months I'll be relocating to Palo Alto after being a Bostonian for almost 30 years

Congrats to all that are mentioned above, as well as the endless number of others that have helped to make Boston a bright hub of Social Media activity and leadership.

    Yeah Boston!

    That is all.
  • Sebastian Gard · 7 months ago
Let's not forget Modernista!, the agency that first took down their web site and distributed their online presence across social platforms like Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, etc. They were on this *long* before Skittles tried it.

To quote the ever sexcellent TJ Kelly, "Don't forget about [us]!"

We're a monthly north-of-boston-based networking/drinking meet-up for folks in the internet industry. We swap business cards, rant about our bosses, seek/advertise projects & gigs, talk about all things trendy-at-the-moment, and drink. Check us out: http://www.buildguild.org/

And Boston also has a news organization that is (slowly) embracing social media. Here are our dozens of twitter accounts - http://boston.com/tools/twitter/

you are right it is a social media hub...especially with david meerman scott, paul g. and me writing the first books on social media...many of the people you mention i find uninfluential, and it is mitx not mixt...with over 9,000, members we are rocking...keep doing your homework, and thanks for the support...larry weber

Larry, are you for real? "Many of the people you mention i find uninfluential?" Who cares?

SHIFT is great, but there are plenty of PR firms working in social media in the Boston area that do as good a job. Laura Fitton has a professional relationship with SHIFT and you should have noted that -- since she helped you identify some of the names and events included in this post. (I can't imagine she recommended herself, or that Brogan recommended himself either, but it's a little weird the way you put it since they are both profiled in the piece).

    Other than that, good job.

There was a great article in the Boston Herald this week about how social media is bringing the Boston indie rock scene together:

wow, great list of who's in boston. Don't forget the Boston SEO Meetup. We have had some of these big names above as guest speakers in this monthly Boston event.

Boston definitely is a "Hub" of activity to be sure. So many great people are working and innovating around here that it must have been pretty tough to narrow the list down. Kudos though. We are kind of a big deal (even if I am a small one) here.

Great post. I've attended Social Media Breakfast, not only is it great networking but you learn a lot about what local companies are doing in Social Media.
I am looking forward to attending The Web Innovators Group (WebInno).

Jennifer: thanks for the kind words about SHIFT Communications -- in the local Boston parlance, no less. "Wicked awesome?" We'll take it :)

Nice to see so many movers & shakers out there. Proud to be on the same page as these folks.

This is great. Glad you put it together!

Beantown has been my home for many years..Miss it a ton. I can't believe it's been almost 10 yrs in Palo Alto California. All those names are the Boston pioneers in social media. All solid people.

See ya this summer when I go to my summer house in Hull, Ma -

Hey Boston Peeps: Is there any summer events that I can plan my trip around??
  • Michael Sprague · 7 months ago
Nice job. Just read this from on a Virgin America flight to Boston.

Speaking of "Hubs", don't miss Twitter's own Biz Stone in beantown tomorrow at HubSpot HQ -- http://bizinboston.eventbrite.com/

also check out the great work being done at the aids.gov site, designed and implemented by the Boston-based public health firm, John Snow, Inc.
  • Paul Gillin · 7 months ago
Great list, Jennifer. I'm proud to be in such esteemed company! Boston has always been strong on applications of technology, though we let the Valley steal the technology development crown some years ago.

Two additions to your list would be Sermo, the very successful social network for physicians, and Waltham-based ZoomInfo, which has created an innovative engine for people search. I'd also mention Eons, a social network for Boomers that has built quite a following and which is led by Monster.com founder Jeff Taylor.

    Some odd omissions:

    Boston-based Going.com, social networking / events startup.

Somerville-based LocaModa, creators of Wiffiti, innovative new social media.

(I've worked for both of them, though I don't work for either currently)
