Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Social Media Campaign to Beat Cancer Eyes Record in Guinness Book

  • Jacob Gall · 1 month ago
Epic fail on the title. Should be: Social Media Campaign to #beatcancer Eyes Record in Guinness Book for easy retweeting to get more money for the campaign. 1900+ multiplied by $0.01 = nearly 20 bucks.
  • Adam Ostrow · 1 month ago
we added the hashtag to the tweets that went out about it ...
  • Jacob Gall · 1 month ago
I'm sure a lot of people added it manually, but not all of the 11,000+ that have now posted this article using the retweet button did so.
  • Maryanne · 1 month ago
Oh dear, read the small print on beatcancereverywhere.com, they donate $0.01 per mention *up to a designated amount*

So for all we know, it could only be like $10!

Hey! Amy (beatcancereverywhere.com designer) here. I just wanted to say - help us spread the word with Digg! Thanks :)

Mashable, would be cool if you include #beatcancer in the RT title so out of that 1000+ RT's you have there via ur retweet tweetmeme button, it would include the hashtag :|

Hmmm... why aren't there any official statement from eBay or Miller on this?
  • twomakesfour · 1 month ago
Hey, need a rewrite of that title. I kept getting caught on what in the world "cancer eyes" could be.
  • Andrew Krebs-Smith · 1 month ago

Though I very much believe in a good cause --
this site was created just 1 week ago:
    http://who.godaddy.com/WhoIs.aspx?domain=beatca...

No where on ebay, no where on paypal is it mentioned.

    Are we being duped?

This is a very good campaign. Will spread this to all my friends. Let's all lend a hand to help beat cancer.
  • MeMeMe · 1 month ago
Does anyone know what the "designated amount" is the companies are donating?
  • mb · 1 month ago
I'd like to see ANYTHING official on this from @paypal since they arent even participating in this themselves. Twitter twits are a bunch of lemmings. You would think Adam Ostrow, "new media editor" could have cited something official like Paypal's website or blog, but since NEITHER of them have anything about this, it was probably a good call not to.

Do the tweets with #beatcancer count from users that have their tweets protected? Since their tweets do not show up in Twitter search how can they be counted?
  • Dan Heinz · 1 month ago
Someone @ reply me and explain how they can scan facebook updates? I don't see the real time fb search
  • Dan Heinz · 1 month ago
    Nevermind, it's public profiles only

Still nothing on eBay/Paypal's or MillerCoors' websites about this. Just a website which could have been made by anyone. And now some websites are saying that the 24hrs has ended, while others are saying it's still going. I would like this to be real but find it all a bit spammy and chain lettery. If you're reporting on this, PLEASE quote sources :(

http://beeverywhere.tv/ and www.beatcancereverywhere.com were sites that were tracking how many hashtags were submitted in the 24hr period which ended at 9am PST Oct 17th. Unless another company is now contributing, people are tweeting but without benefit of donation being made. It might be helpful for Pete to send an update.
  • Shadowbat aka Scotty · 1 month ago
Their website said the project ended Oct 17, 9:00 AM. Their counter wasn't keeping up either. Twitter was showing more than twice as many tweets as the beatcancereverywhere.com counter. I alerted Tamara at beeverywhere.com

I made a typo in the web address. It was beeverywhere.tv

There are so many types of cancer out there, and Most Insurance companies will deny some of the coverage. I am happy that President Obama had pushed 5,000,000.00 to cancer research this year for the eradication of this disease, but time will tell mean while we should help out in our communities do to the lack of healthcare in America.

Beware this might be a scam to get free publicity riding on the goodwill of tweeters. The promotion ended this morning at 9am. There does not seem to be any official confirmation that the sponsors are real and the fine print says "up to a designated amount" which might be pittance. The tweet counts on the web site are not updating which helps confirm it is over.

I hope this is not true but someone with connections should verify this and post.

The more I look into this the more I'm convinced it is a scam. The whois registration is suspect, beeverywhere.com no longer exists.

So you ask how can they potentially benefit from this? Perhaps they are collecting personal info via cookies etc, building permalinks through the social network buttons and even worse perhaps taking all or a large percentage of any donation made on the site itself.

Cancer charities are a wonderful cause, my mother recently passed away due to cancer so it is dear to my heart. However, if someone is using charity for personal gain, that is despicable.

David, you're correct that the promotion ended this morning. The http://beeverywhere.tv/ site says to tune in to CNN tonight at 7pm EST for info on the promotion. People are still tweeting and thinking they're doing good (see the aforementioned "lemmings" comment) so I hate to see that they don't search for more info or that word gets out that it's over. BTW $2086.20 was raised according to the beatcancereverywhere.com counter but who knows what the "designated' amount really was?
  • Matt · 1 month ago
    It's 7pm EST now, but it's nowhere on CNN.com.
  • kegill · 1 month ago
Adam, why didn't you detail the 24-hour period (9am Fri - 9 am Sat) in this post? It's now almost 13 hours later, #beatcancer is the number one trending topic, and people are still tweeting mindlessly. :-/
