Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Skimmer: Visual Desktop App for Tracking Your Favorite Social Sites

  • Thorsten Claus · 8 months ago
Hm... the download button on their site doesn't do anything. "mashable" effect? The "weare" part of their website points to nirvana, and I cannot find a twitter handle... hm...

Right now I'm getting a page not found 404.
Is there an alternative mirror download?
  • Facebook User · 8 months ago
Can you also connect MySpace and LinkedIn to Skimmer? It would be great if DiggIt was also an option.
  • Chris Wiggins · 8 months ago
As of now, Skimmer only supports Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, and Blogger. We may add more services in the future, however.

Looks nice, but their privacy policy goes on about collecting passwords and click-stream data and sharing with "agents" and other stuff I don't understand. And it wants unrestricted system access.

Anyone with a law degree translate it?

    same problem. don't get it
  • honeytech · 8 months ago
I was their in the abode air workshop at wordcamp india. When i asked the adobe guys about AIR memory hocking issues then they simply says "we don't have any answers".
Adobe air applications are no doubt awesome but they suck so much of system requirements for example "Tweet deck".
I just installed the "skimmer" and hope it will work fine for me.Will write the reviews soon.

I was waiting for something like this to appear on the AIR platform but alas the download link is not working.
  • Matt Hardwick · 8 months ago
Where do you register? There seems to be no mention of Skimmer anywhere on the new site.
  • Mushin · 8 months ago

This seems to be just what have been looking for! I hope this is a good way to manage my personal social medias, I wonder if it would be helpful to social media managers trying to maintain the networks of a brand...

Visual flow is terrible. Huge avatar blocks on the left are disassociated from the messages on the right. Typography and color scheme contribute to a very hard-to-read (and ironically) hard-to-skim mess. No ability to view replies in threaded form. No obvious way to categorize your contacts to use the category filters.

Sorry, needs a lot of work before this is ready to compete. Take a look at Tweetdeck for grouping/typography/layout ideas that work. Take a look at Twittilator Pro (iPhone App) for how to handle threading.

Plus you need to incorporate some trending views if you want this to be the home-base client for users. Right now nothing beats a combo of apps on your iPhone/iPod touch. TweetDeck is the only desktop client that comes close but they need to add ability to view threaded replies.

Skimmer looks lovely, but I think I'll shy away from it from the point of view of the Ts & Cs. Not too keen on Air applications anyway.

I wrote a related post here on Skimmer, lifestreaming, and encouraging behaviour change if anyone's interested:

    Thanks for the article.

Whether this is fully functional or not, I think the effort is a wake up call to the industry. I was trying to get Fallon to do something similar two years ago. Agencies, on the digital or traditional side, are not fully embracing the available mediums. Digital agencies say they are the wave of the future and are more than production companies. Traditional agencies say they are integrated. Neither is really true to date. This is the second effort, first was by a digital shop in CO with a different product, by an agency that is actually an attempt at both. Good for you Fallon. Good for you.

This app is sexy as hell and, I'm afraid, a possible tweetdeck killer by offering more features in a more simplified, elegant interface. I'm replaceing TD with Skimmer.

I am totally onboard with the vision - would be so cool, but it just doesn't do it just yet -kinda clunky and disorganized. Keep going guys - first version of windows wasn't great either.

I tried to install skimmer but i get this mysterious error: "This application cannot be installed because this installer has been mis-configured. Please contact the application author for assistance." Any ideas??
  • John Paul Kostrzewski · 8 months ago
Not quite there, but it's well on it's way. You need to add more services! I've read the post reading, "We may add more services in the future..." There should be no question about it! The point of the app is to connect and make it easier to use all these services. That won't happen if it isn't included in this app. There are also a few errors and "oddities" (a 303x124 px avatar? and what's with the white ball?), but if these are addressed and fixed and other services added it will be great. I'll wait for that version to come out.
