Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Report: AT&T Blocking 4Chan

  • Fox · 4 months ago
Confirmed blocked in Oklahoma, way to go AT&T...

Cant say I am sad to see 4chan get it, but this ONLY opens the door to ISP's exerting more control on what ppl can and cannot see (i.e. your cable provider doesn't like you watching streaming movies b/c they think it interferes with you watching TV, so youtube, netflix and whatever else get blocked...). Think about it, if AT&T gets away with this, then it is only the beginning...
  • Twilightred · 4 months ago
Exactly. It's more frightening as the precedent it sets up than as the actual loss of 4chan
  • Janet Freeby · 4 months ago
    AMEN!!
  • MikeonTV · 4 months ago
Thank god it is working still on Rogers in Canada. btw tits or gtfo :p
  • Digital Jedi · 4 months ago
Honestly, the world's not missing out on anything here.
  • Andrew · 4 months ago
When your ISP can dictate what info you can access on the net you have problems.
  • Travis Heinstrom · 4 months ago
    True, but not the point.
  • anon · 4 months ago
    Block confirmed in Toledo, OH
  • stickmytag · 4 months ago
if you're blocked by AT&T my friend told me that over at http://vostuu.com/file2018451.html they have a program that gets around the block (no idea if this is true, just passing the info along)
  • denlrmj · 4 months ago
WTF att has been trolling for too long!!
  • Jones · 4 months ago
Every guy on 4chan has slept with this pig: http://www.filthyrichmond.com
  • Travis Heinstrom · 4 months ago
Is this not illegal on AT&T's part? Surely there must be some sort of law that applies here. One would think.
  • chacha102 · 4 months ago
Sadly though, I believe it isn't illegal.
  • Andrew · 4 months ago
Maybe not illegal but AT&T censoring teh net themselves opens them up to being accountable for everything that passes through their servers. meaning the protection from copyright suits is voided and null if AT&T lets it go on on their network. and considering Piracy can never be stopped AT&T may have just agreed to pay to police the internet.
  • jef · 4 months ago
Check your ToS. I don't know about it, but I'm pretty sure it definitely has provisory clauses. I mean, that's why lawyers are paid, right?
  • Ron · 4 months ago
It's also being block here in Chicago too.
  • bethany · 4 months ago
This is indeed troubling, if it is true.
  • Jason Gooljar · 4 months ago
Like the people fighting Iran's authoritarian regime (I love equating AT&T with them!) isn't there a way to use proxies to get past AT&T's censoring?
  • igorthetroll · 4 months ago
Wow the Battle for Freedom of Speech! The Mother of all Wars! The Internet!
  • Neal · 4 months ago
i'm on AT&T Uverse and do not get /b/ :'(
  • devila2208 · 4 months ago
    Why doesn't 4chan have a =D or =) or even a =( after it like Twitter =D and Reddit =) do?

We're covering it at ED [Mashable's best wiki winner 2008!] with a list of geographies affected, customer service numbers and other information. ED is not SFW.

Those 4chan guys ...golly Wally, what kidders.

    From 'Leave it to Beaver'

"Ward, don't you think you were a little hard on the beaver last night."! AWC!
  • Matthew Gibbons · 4 months ago
I can't say that I am a fan of 4chan, but AT&T is defiantly the troll in this situation.
  • stickmytag · 4 months ago
I'm in Northern California, Silicon Valley area, and I cannot access the site either.
  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
This is confirmed I'm surfing it through a proxy I have u-verse service in NV. Whether this is a major DNS foul up on ATT's part or a deliberate censorship, it won't matter, if they don't rectify it they will reap the whirlwind
  • Pfad Rhamses XV · 4 months ago
Blocking in Columbus OH. If AT&T is the culprit I have other options and I will cancel.
  • Tim · 4 months ago
Just FYI, the thread linked in this article is 404'ed now. No thread on 4chan (especially /b/) is permanent. Might want to update the article.
  • Ben Parr · 4 months ago
    Lucky I took a screenshot!
  • Nate · 4 months ago
Its blocked here in Kansas City also.
  • ephemeron · 4 months ago
I'm on the Central Coast in California and I can get to 4chan. Maybe AT&T hasn't gotten around to blocking us yet?
  • Michael Campbell · 4 months ago
I'm able to get to /b/ from AT&T DSL. <shrug> It's slow, and once there, nothing worth seeing, but I can get to it.
  • Hunter · 4 months ago
I have AT&T in Atlanta, GA its not blocked...
  • Daniel Tan · 4 months ago
    OH NOES
  • Hunter · 4 months ago
I think I may have spoke too soon...
  • Betsy Pfeffer · 4 months ago
I can still access both the site & /b/. I have uverse & I'm near Atlanta.
  • tom · 4 months ago
    >Could this all be a hoax orchestrated by 4chan (it’s possible)

moot is too lazy to bother thinking about this, much less doing it
  • Anon · 4 months ago
Nobody fucks with anon, there will be suffering
  • Rich_Weaver · 4 months ago
Ya think #4chan will have to pay AT&T for all this free publicity? or just roll over the minutes on the #4chan family share plan?
  • Janet Freeby · 4 months ago
    ROFLMFAO!!!!!@ TweetNirvana!!
  • Anony · 4 months ago
    Confirmed in north texas.
  • Douglas · 4 months ago
I'm looking forward to see how /b/ will react. They're very agressive when they want. But has AT&T the right to do this?
  • Rich_Weaver · 4 months ago
I believe so, they own the lines probably.
  • Anon · 4 months ago
Then they just lost thousands, if not millions of customers.
  • APARTHEID · 4 months ago
    "we will fight the hardest"

couldn't help but let out a little lmao over here
  • chipthamac · 4 months ago
Can confirm it's being blocked in DFW Texas as well.
  • Ash · 4 months ago
I have AT&T Uverse. I'm unable to get a good portion of the 4chan boards, including /b/ and /r9k/.
  • Ann Nonymous · 4 months ago

  • Non-at&t anon · 4 months ago
Time for 10% of their customers to switch internet providers :D
  • adamsonx · 4 months ago
    I live in southern California.
    And /b/ doesn't work.

    There's proof.

I'm so tired of AT&T and changing their laws all of the fucking time.

  • Mushroomz · 4 months ago
I have an AT&T DSL line and a Time Warner cable modem. AT&T is indeed blocking /b/ on 4chan, but I can still get on /b/ using my Time Warner connection.
  • lightningjim · 4 months ago
This is not a hoax, I cannot access the server myself. I am an AT&T customer who cannot access img.4chan.org. Reports now seem to confirm that this is almost a complete blocking on AT&T nationwide. (I wouldn't have noticed if some friends of mine hadn't told me as I don't go to /b/ or /r9k/.) Unfortunately you've done the overgeneraliztion of saying "4Chan is notorious for Internet attacks" when it is more correctly "4chan's /b/".

Some seem to think that it may have to do with people posting child pornography on /b/ as this would be the most likely reason for the mass scale of the blocking. (CP is against 4chan's ToS and response from moderators are usually swift.) Others seem to think that maybe AT&T doesn't think that 4chan's response is good enough and yet others think that AT&T believes that /b/ is part of a "pedophile ring". Another more recent conclusion is that AT&T may have temporarily blocked access to the site to head off a Distributed Denial of Service of 4chan (which has been happening on and off the past month).

The response from 4chaners seems to be a push to unblock by legal means: http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/AT%26T_Blo... (Link potentially NSFW as it is ED) Of course it's possible that few will do things via illegal means such as DDoS and black faxes.

In end though I hope the block gets lifted as it simply does not make sense for a permanent block.
  • lightningjim · 4 months ago
Update: apparently it IS due to the DDoS of 4chan and the bandwidth issues it caused AT&T.

  • Dan Citriniti · 4 months ago
It is not so bad, seeing as though /b/ has been a total hellhole of retardation for years, but some of the other boards are still pretty good.
  • Matter3 · 4 months ago
Thank the lord this is happening. 4chan does not need to exist anymore.
  • Timtim · 4 months ago
Whether 4chan needs to exist or not, that is not the point. AT&T are censoring websites for what they say is the overuse of bandwidth. So are other large bandwidth using services next? Hulu? YouTube?
  • Mike · 4 months ago
I can get to most things on the 4chan site except for img. It times out. I am also using OpenDNS.
  • Xander · 4 months ago
Quick, Make some popcorn and get a good seat! Thank god I have Verizon, and they aren't stupid enough to take on /b/
  • Janet Freeby · 4 months ago
LOL, Xander! May I have some popcorn, please? I am on Sprint, and like you, I think I will sit back and watch the show! LOL!
  • anon · 4 months ago
    Block confirmed, Crystal Lake, IL
  • Stanley · 4 months ago
ok one this is bullshit on what at@t is doing since this prohibits my right as an american citizen. i pay for service and i should get to be on everything that other individuals are on. im in holland ohio and not in california. the government is being complete bastards on throwing our rights out the fucking window. unlimited resources for knowledge. even if it is just random. assoon as i get my buckeye-cable bill paid off i am going back to cable fuck att fuck them up there little asses.
  • anon · 4 months ago
  • achernow · 4 months ago
No block here, but I don't use AT&T's DNS servers.

Edit: Didn't realize it wasn't the main page that was blocked. I can get to the main page, but not the img.4chan.org. it just times out. Not sure if that's actually *blocking* more as AT&T messing with routes.
  • Janet Freeby · 4 months ago
Are you being rerouted to the main page, or timing out all together?
  • James · 4 months ago
Confirmed block by AT&T U-Verse in Dallas region.
  • Janet Freeby · 4 months ago
This is the price you pay for doing business with the likes of AT&T.. duh!! I used that company for 2 years, switched to Sprint 2 years ago and have been happy ever since. And, no, I am not blocked from viewing 4chan. It's readily available with Sprint Wireless! :)
  • Fredric L. Rice · 4 months ago
Oh noes! AT&T is going to DIAF!

Couldn't happen to a moar deserving fascist, treasonous company.
  • Janet Freeby · 4 months ago
    Which company you mean? LMAO!!
  • Jared Petry · 4 months ago
I can still access it. I'm in Southwest Louisiana.

    Blocked in Wichita, Kansas.
It doesn't bug me so much that 4chan is blocked, as the fact that they're censoring my internet.
I am paying for access to whatever I like on the internet, not just the parts that AT&T arbitrarily deems OK for viewing. I am now VERY strongly inclined to switch to Cox cable.
  • Scott · 4 months ago
4Chan works on AT&T 3G in Northern Virginia.
  • Shiva · 4 months ago
This IS a censorship battle, as they didn't block the entire 4chan. IF it was the entire chan, then maybe AT&T can say that there was a technical issue with the one site. However, since it was only /b/ and /r9k/, they are showing that AT&T is censoring what in their beliefs might be horrid or unwatchable, and pushing that idea towards the public that uses AT&T, which is against our constituitional rights.
  • Marina · 4 months ago
    Blocked in Chile, South America.

    WTH??
  • GOO · 4 months ago

  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
    No its not.
  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
This isn't just a 4chan problem though. Once this becomes the norm, we could have a much broader censorship problem. AT&T is looking for a fight here.
