I can't honestly speak about this website since I haven't tried it but I do know their public relation person is great considering this isn't a new idea at all. As most New Yorkers already know, there have been sites like this around for years in NYC. Try looking at www.Rent-direct.com, www.SkipBrokers.com or StreetEasy.com. I'd say these three are the go-to sites for NYC apartments.

I remember reading a Wired article a couple months ago about craigslist and how they are unwilling to upgrade their crappy design and functionality. It is really amazing how they are able to survive on just a dated website.

Other similar sites have been around for a while. Streeteasy.com has more broker listings and NYBits.com has a lot more listings from management companies. In fact, RentHop seems to be modeled after those two.

i think there are a ton of sites that have features like renthop, but most importantly how is rent hop going to get muthfuckas to use their products?

this is def cool. if you folks are interested, there's another new rental search site as well called RentedSpaces.com - although without mapping for now - with comprehensive listings without the spam (over 70K in NYC and national coverage). listings include apartments, condos, houses for rent and roommates. there's also blog content updated daily around lifestyle and advice.

This is a great idea but this isn't anything new. I remember when I was looking for an apartment in San Francisco there was a mashup that pulled the same data from Google Maps and Craigslist. It's located at http://www.housingmaps.com and features apartments for rent, sale and sublet elsewhere in the United States.
