Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Push Gmail Comes to iPhone and Other Mobiles

  • Alan Belniak · 2 months ago
It's a disappointment that the iPhone only supports a connection to one MS Exchange account. Surely I can't be the only person who has a corporate e-mail account that uses MS Exchange, and a GMail account (where I'd now like to get push mail). Oh well. I'm glad they did this; I'll be more glad if/when Apple somehow/way permits more than one Exchange profile per iPhone.
  • kderentz · 2 months ago
Im in the same boat :(
  • AppStoreIcons.com · 2 months ago
Last time I tried Google Sync on the iPhone, I lost all of my contacts!
I think I will just stick with checking manually every 5 minutes...
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
You can selectively choose to not sync contacts or calendars now. So you don't have to do that if you fear losing your address book.
  • adam · 2 months ago
Yes, I have the same situation. Does anyone know a way around this?
  • MacRumors · 2 months ago
Why did you try to brush out your e-mail address?
    It still clearly says:

  • Michael Koby · 2 months ago
The same stipulation exists in Outlook, you can only have 1 Exchange account per Outlook profile. You can however have multiple profiles on a computer and switch between them, but it requires closing outlook EACH TIME you want to open a different exchange account).

I agree though, I'll be glad when I can have multiple Exchange accounts set up on my iPhone, allowing me to add my work's Exchange account as well.
  • Brandon Wall · 2 months ago
Wait, you mean iPhones couldn't do this before? Man, my Android phone has spoiled me.
  • Snook · 2 months ago
Yeah, it is sad this makes news for the lemmings.
  • olafgeibig · 2 months ago
II don't agree that IMAP idle is not instant enough. I used to have a simple SonyEricsson Phone configured with IMAP idle and the GMail IMAP server. Email was pushed on the device just a few seconds after the mail had been sent. How much more instant shall it be?
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
I guess it depends on the phone. With IMAP, the phone has to poll the server all the time, to check for updates. With push, the updates come to it -- so it's better for battery life -- and on the iPhone it's a better option than having it refresh every 15 minutes.
  • Will · 2 months ago
    http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2177
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAP_IDLE

IMAP IDLE doesn't poll the server. It tells the server it is ready to receive any updates from it. It's not true push as the push component doesn't exist from client > sever, just server > client (although this won't be noticed depending on your client). But as far as receiving your email it is push :)

I've been using Gmail on my S60 phone with the built in email client for almost two years and it definitely pushes email to my phone. It's great!

The only reason this doesn't work on the iPhone is because Apple crippled Mail. The suspicious person in me thinks this was to make MobileMe more appealing. Mail.app on Mac OS X fully supports IMAP IDLE.
  • diablo · 2 months ago
But then why allow for Yahoo email push in the Mail app and not Gmail?
  • Scott Stubblefield · 2 months ago
So what about Android users? What is that considered? We have the Gmail app that syncs with our online account...
  • bryan · 2 months ago
It absolutely matters to me. that's why I chose blackberry over the iphone was push email
  • hramos · 2 months ago
Awesome, just tested it and works perfectly. Just what the iPhone was missing.
  • xxdesmus · 2 months ago
Less than impressed. Having tons of issues with Google Sync's push Gmail. I have 3 emails sitting in my inbox and the iPhone won't see them. Not a great first impression.
  • diablo · 2 months ago
Agreed. I did a test and took several minutes to get the notification of new email with push enabled when I knew it was sitting there in my inbox online.
  • xxdesmus · 2 months ago
I went back to NuevaSync.com for now -- I'll wait a few weeks for Google to get their act together on this.
  • Justin · 2 months ago
I'm having ALL kinds of problems with this. Email taking forever to load. All my emails disappearing from my phone! Reappearing later. Not to mention its definitely not picking up all my mail. Unimpressed
  • Eric M Goulet · 2 months ago
Did any of you have any issues setting it up like I did (and posted about previously)?
  • Pablo · 2 months ago
Did you enable push in the settings?
  • Name · 2 months ago
iPhone does not sync properly. Only download certain messages to the phone and not others.
Also push feature does not push. Emails take forever to show up.
  • Hasan · 2 months ago
this is total FAIL! if you already have a work Exchange account set up, this is useless.
  • Fadi Rizk · 2 months ago
excited to hear this but feel bad for apps like Gpush......they've become obsolete
  • kderentz · 2 months ago
Not really for those of us with a Exchange work account and Gmail personal account its still needed since you can only have 1 Exchange account on the iPhone.
  • Al · 2 months ago
I thought so too originally - but I've had GPush for a while and if the main reason you want push is for free Google Voice SMS, then I've found GPush is better. GPush pops up the notification window so it's easy to see at a glance that I have a new text message. The native push only updates the Mail icon badge so if I have unread mail in other accounts and missed the vibrate then I can't actually tell that I have a new SMS.
  • kderentz · 2 months ago
Now we just need e-mail threading in the iphone e-mail client so it can be 1/4 as good as the native gmail client on Android phones.

Thats my biggest gripe with my iPhone is that e-mail on Android for Gmail users is SOOOOOOOOOOO much better.
  • Ricky · 2 months ago
not so good, I have problems with imap
  • vegas · 2 months ago
I can read through the 'censorship'! Isn't that awesome?!
  • Critter · 2 months ago
I think I will go back to my normal way of doing it. Using Imap I can control the folders that show on the iphone... with this... I get all of them. I'll just continue to use Gpush for now..
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
On the iphone anyway, you can control what folders you want, it's in the settings panel under advanced. By default it does "inbox" but you can select folders you want.
  • JS365 · 2 months ago
You can select which folders can show with IMAP. But there is no place to set which folders to show through exchange mail. You can only select which folders you want to have "PUSH" function.

Push doesn't matter to me when choosing a phone. I've made a conscious effort to not be a slave to my email. I check it, it doesn't check me! Plus everyone knows they can reach me on twitter which is far more instant anyway.
  • xxdesmus · 2 months ago
completely unscientific testing: NuevaSync.com was pushing my Gmail in 5 seconds or less. Google Sync is pushing my Gmail in 40 seconds (on average).
  • P Cora Jr. · 2 months ago
yup is called "everybody in their mother is using it". I am having the same problem, give it some time and it will be back to normal. Honestly I find it funny how people complain so much about little free things like this. People... They are free.........
  • xxdesmus · 2 months ago
I just switched back to NuevaSync for the time being while the rush dies down and Google gets their act together. I'm aware that Google Sync is free, but I can still complain when a service backed by such a large company performs so terribly.
  • aboutjer · 2 months ago
I used nuevasync.com as well. I've been with them since the 1st gen iPhone. It works for me and since it already occupies my Exchange email "slot," I'm reluctant to change to Google Sync.

How do I enable push on my S60 phone? Do I have to set something in Gmail's settings? Please help
  • Ramesh King · 2 months ago
I really wish we could have more than one exchange account. I have to have my corporate account on my phone....
  • locomoco · 2 months ago
My Google Apps email and Gmail accounts stopped syncing with my Blackberry this morning. Coincidence?
  • Annand · 2 months ago
Push notifications doesn't seem to work for forwarded emails. Anyone else having this problem?
  • medialists · 2 months ago
Great, I'm going to set this up on my iPhone today!
  • Julie · 2 months ago
I'm wondering how this works if I'm already syncing my Contacts and Calendar through a Microsoft Exchange account... Do I simply turn "on" the Mail feature? Or do I have go through the process of deleting the whole account and then adding it again and at the initial setup choosing "on" for Mail, Contacts and Calendars?
  • Eric M Goulet · 2 months ago
I can't get this to work. Can anyone help me?

I follow the instructions to the letter and the result is a pop-up titled "Cannot Get Mail" and it says "The connection to the server failed." and my only option is to push OK.

Is there some setting on my iPhone 3G or on gmail that could be blocking this??

    Thank you for your help.

Also to note is that I used the IMAP method here: https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?a...
and was at least able to see the mail/log in.
  • facebook-738880363 · 2 months ago
I am getting the same thing, and really long verification times trying to set it up, too. I think the gmail server is snowed. Wasn't ramped up to handle the first day traffic, it would appear.

It started to download for me, then just failed.
  • Eric M Goulet · 2 months ago
Thank you for replying. If it does work... or continues to not work... I'd be interested to know as I continue to try to troubleshoot.
  • chiba13 · 2 months ago
No, push mail doesn't matter to me - I prefer to check my e-mail when I want to check it, not when it wants me to.

Plus, anything based on Microsoft technology... ick. I'll stick to "old" gmail, thankyouverymuch
  • YummyPies · 2 months ago
Well, it just didn't work for me, maybe something to do with my language being set to English (UK). I'll stick with IMAP until my University enables Google Sync (been told they are getting on to it)
  • Eric M Goulet · 2 months ago
I'm having the same issue... and I'm English (US).
  • confused · 2 months ago
what is the notification suppossed to look like. after a few minutes, when i opened up gmail on the iphone again, i saw everything. but how do i know when something is 'pushed' -- ?
  • Ryan Lalonde · 2 months ago
Push mail doesn't matter too much but it's nice to finally have it on the iPhone.
  • Alain · 2 months ago
Be carreful with one things. The Exchange server want you google account password and not you gmail or google apps gmail password....
  • Rodlie · 2 months ago
What about IMAP, though? Is there a way to have the push and have the IMAP feature so that what I delete on my iPhone is reflected in my gmail account?
  • rikrasmussen · 2 months ago
I use a T-Mobile myTouch with an Exchange server account at work and with my Gamil account. If I am at my desk and see an email appear in Gmail on my PC browser I simultaneously hear a beep on my phone and the email is available there also if I look on the phone. In fact I find myself listening for the beep on my phone as a new mail notice even when I am busy at my desk PC.
  • beley · 2 months ago
I love email, but I just don't need to get a message the second it comes in. I get so much email as it is... I have 4 main email accounts. Personal, 2 Agency, and 1 for my e-commerce company. I currently have ... [looking] ... 70 unread messages and get a few every minute.

I don't want my phone buzzing every 30 seconds with a new email. Maybe that's a problem on my end... maybe I need to unsubscribe from a few things and filter better, I don't know. But I do know that I don't treat email as an immediate form of communication anymore. If someone needs me, they can pick up the phone and call me, or send me a text message or DM.

That said, I'm sure push email is very important to some people... I can see forwarding some critical messages to a special email account that has push enabled, for instance.
  • Arun Srinivasan · 2 months ago
PUSH really matters for people without blackberry, definitely me. I need to knwo if there was a client for pulling/push lotus notes, mnotes sucks..
