Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Pro Cycling on Twitter: 48 People Who Aren’t Lance Armstrong

  • Christian Kraemer · 7 months ago
This is for sure the most impressive list of illegal drug users I ever saw in my life!
I mean are you really that blind or just ignorant?
  • Ben Parr · 9 months ago
Wow, that's one hell of a list. Good job!
  • Javaun Moradi · 9 months ago
All I can say is WOW! As a cyclist/mountain biker, this might be the most important blog post I've read in, I don't know... forever?

A few cycling buddies just signed up for Twitter last week and asked me what it was good for. I think you may have just made Twitter the most important communication tool in their lives.
  • TourDeTweets · 9 months ago
What is Twitter good for? Well, to begin with... some of the finest pro cycling race coverage from all over the world tweetcasted to the nearest computer or mobile phone. Have them follow @TourDeTweets and all those listed here and they'll never ask the question again.
  • Hank Trisler · 9 months ago
A really delightful article, Chris. The personal insights and vignettes add full dimension to these remarkable athletes. Thanks for your good work and dedication to the sport.
  • Fiona · 9 months ago
Have been following most of these as they are added. Nice to see them get some attention since @LanceArmstrong has converted many riders & others to the religion of Twitter. For enthusiasts there are also several charitable bicycle rides that use Twitter as well like @RedRibbonRideMN
  • Julie Gallaher · 9 months ago
Great list but one correction (or should I say exception). @AmgenTourofCali hasn't updated since December. With over 1500 followers, I think that's a FAIL.
  • Richard Masoner · 9 months ago
This is a fantastic article -- I'll tweet it immediately :-) using your handy dandy Twitter button.

Thanks so much for mentioning Cyclelicious to your list. I second Josh's suggestion to add Carlton Reid @carltonreid to your list -- he's the real bicycling social media guru and he's personally convinced some of the pros on your list to sign up.
  • TourDeTweets · 9 months ago
Also highly recommend @carltonreid as a follow.
  • Martha Van Inwegen · 9 months ago
    *HAVE* to add @carltonreid!! @marthavan

    Here's one more for you:

    Dr. Allen Lim

Who he is: Team exercise physiologist, training advisor, psychologist and utility man for Team Garmin-Slipstream. Basically he's Mr. Everything for Team Garmin-Slipstream, the man responsible for coaching to rice cakes and performance innovations like ice vests and space boots.

    Follow him here: http://twitter.com/allencolim
  • TourDeTweets · 9 months ago
Also @KoosMoerenhout of Rabobank. He actually has replied with quality tweets.
  • electromute · 9 months ago
Definitely +1 for Allen Lim. His posts are really fun to read.
  • saddlesore · 9 months ago
Awww, c'mon, that is NOT the real @emerckx! FAIL!
  • TourDeTweets · 9 months ago
If I remember correctly, which is about 52 % of the time, @lancearmstrong was the one that talked @emerckx into tweeting and he then put a tweet out directing people to follow. It was a while back... could be wrong.

Throwing my twitter hat into the ring: http://twitter.com/bikeworldnews

    We're small, but growing quickly.

John Murphy of Team OUCH: @jpmurph8
Rory Sutherland of Team OUCH: @rorysutherland1

AND DRUM ROLL, HOW CAN YOU FORGET... LAST YEARS TDF WINNER

@carlossastre ohhh maybe this is twitter accounts who actually tweet... maybe enough followers and we'll get classic tweets from interview catch phrases like "ahhh yes, thee, sensations were very good today." Pure-tweeter-pressure...

As a fan, it is great that so many in the world of cycling are using Twitter. Since cycling is basically a "mobile" sports that isn't covered as well by the traditional sports media, Twitter lends itself well as a medium for communication in a way that wouldn't be as compelling in other sports. Fans taking Twitpics from points along the race course, Tweets from team directors and mechanics within the race caravan allow for up to date information that you just can't get by any other medium.
  • Martha Van Inwegen · 9 months ago
Paul Sherwen is getting the hang of Twitter too! Follow him @paulsherwen. Take a peak at his, @philliggett and @johanbruyneel's sense of humor - very cool men! http://bit.ly/GHo2O

Thanks Chris, I just got back from volunteering the whole week with the Amgen Tour of Cali and Twitter saved me. Sometimes it gets boring waiting on the course for 3 hours in the rain just to do your job for 30 seconds as the riders go by. Tuning in to Twitter kept me informed of what was going on during the race and made the whole week more fun. I came back telling all of my friends about this new form of instant reporting. TourDeTweets, BikeRadar and others did bang up jobs with continuous tweets. It will be interesting to see how this medium grows in the future. Great article.

I'm a cyclist, add me @danhhoang and my new project I'm trying to start @bikeamarillo

You guys missed Robbie McEwen, who is new on twitter, so send him some twitter love and follow him @mcewenrobbie. Looks like he'll be updating this weekend from the Belguim classics.
  • Philanthropy Family · 9 months ago
    You guys missed Robbie McEwen.

He's just joined twitter - @mcewenrobbie - so give him some twitter love and follow him here http://twitter.com/mcewenrobbie

He's racing the Belgium Classics this weekend, and it looks like he'll be tweeting from there.
  • Les Faber · 8 months ago
Good pick! I added him on my Twitter: www.twitter.com/cyclemania
  • Mellow Johnny's · 9 months ago
Great list thanks for the inclusion, even a few that I haven't seen and will be adding, we also added a new account for Tour de France specific info @tourjohnnys where we'll tweet live from Le Tour the last 2 weeks of the race, any TdF question welcomed, especially travel related
  • carltonreid · 9 months ago
Hey, Josh, Martha, Richard and Tour de Tweets...thanks for plugging me!

This is a great top 50 and I love the way Chris has given his own views on who is funny.

My list of 370 bike folks on Twitter is a list, broken down into categories, there's no running commentary. http://tinyurl.com/biketweeps

    PS
Chris - I set up both of these accounts, @philliggett and @paulsherwen I did it to protect their names, and to nudge them to Tweet. Yes, I'm a Phil fan but I'd prefer to be called a friend! In fact this is official. Every year I'm one of the friends on the Phil and Friends ride, a challenge ride in the UK Lake District. I got to tell you, Phil is a demon descender...
  • Mitchell · 9 months ago
That's a great list! Though I seriously don't need more reminders of how much I need to get some good mileage in.
  • Eddy · 9 months ago
This article gave me an idea. I put together a website that is a feed aggregator of all things cycling from Twitter. This is turning out to be a big chore. Should have 400 feeds in by the end of the week. Take a look at the site and let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Eddy

Hundreds - Over 500 cycling feeds from Twitter.
Includes links to websites(if the Tweeter supplied it) and Twitter pages for each feed.

Also has Cycling News feeds from about 30 organizations.

Tried again this morning - site won't load and I get hit by a Classmates.com advert before the site loads.

Where are the females in this group?!
Check out @mtbikemary if you are interested in a woman who is riding the continental divide trail AGAIN this year and regularly races 24 hours in a row...
  • Scott · 8 months ago
I actually made a blog feed of the big names in cycling on Twitter, most of the people on this list are included and all come in to one feed for easy reading.

You can find it on BikeBlogCollection at http://www.bikeblogcollection.com/blog-feeds/

Check it out, makes it easy!
  • Les Faber · 8 months ago
Humf! You forget our cycling BLOG! LOL ---- Thanks for the handy list Scott.
  • Mark Parker · 8 months ago
Is it just me or did you miss the runner up from the last two Tour's? @cadelofficial - Cadel?
  • Les Faber · 8 months ago
I love it ---- Thanks for this. As an avid cyclist, I am always looking for cycling "tidbits'. I get them when I need them --- and "Retweet" at will.

Can you believe that Lance Armstrong actually got me on Twitter?
  • Bryan · 8 months ago
This is a great list for the Twitter cyclists. I was already following many on the list but found some new ones. Wish I would have thought to write this article.

Levi Leipheimer's verified twitter account is actually @LeviLeipheimer. The account mentioned in the article (@Levi_Leipheimer) has been suspended.
  • Nessa · 4 months ago
    brook,

Just for the record, Levi switched his account from @Levi_Leipheimer to @LeviLeipheimer. That's why the account is now suspended.
