Mashable - The Social Media Guide: PREVIEW: Tweetie 2.0 for iPhone [Pics]

"It's not that $2.99 is going to bankrupt anyone, it's the principle of the thing. How would you feel if, each time apple released a new version of the iPhone OS, you had to buy your iPhone all over again? "

    Exactly my thoughts-officially pissed now!
  • Dillon Smith · 2 months ago
It's not that $2.99 is going to bankrupt anyone, it's the principle of the thing. How would you feel if, each time apple released a new version of the iPhone OS, you had to buy your iPhone all over again? What's to stop all app developers from just adding one tiny new feature at a time to their apps and charging every single time they update the version #? The answer is nothing, unless we stand up and say we're not going to pay for a second time. On top of all the negative feelings this will create with current tweetie users, won't this end up hurting the developer in the long run because, if this is treated like a whole new app, if people aren't following all the blog chatter about this new release, how is anyone going to know that there is a Tweetie v2.0 if the App Store doesn't provide notification of an "update"?
  • Erik K Veland · 2 months ago
"It's not that $2.99 is going to bankrupt anyone, it's the principle of the thing. How would you feel if, each time apple released a new version of the iPhone OS, you had to buy your iPhone all over again?"

Dumbest analogy ever. Apple does charge for system updates as you would very well know if you were an iPod Touch owner. It's just subsidised by your phone provider when you own an iPhone.
  • wumfi · 2 months ago
The point here is that it *is* a whole new app. I don't feel that it's unfair at all. The dev has spent a lot of time on this release, why should this update be delivered for free? Is $3 really that much to ask for an app that one uses every day? As a previous poster says, just skip your coffee for one day :-)
  • Nick Wood · 2 months ago
Have you ever paid to see the sequel to a movie? Ever read the next in a series of books? How about albums by bands you like; shouldn't we get the second album for free if we bought the first one? Shut the hell up with your crappy stupid arguments, and GTFO my iPhone OS. Jesus christ on a bike.
  • Joe Dawson · 2 months ago
They should introduce the ability to Group the people we follow!
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
I agree that would be nice -- but I think that the reason it hasn't been integrated is because Twitter hasn't done that yet. If Twitter would do it, I'm sure Tweetie would follow suit. I wish Twitter would make it an official feature.
  • lysdexia · 2 months ago
    No it wouldn't be nescient.
  • hkdkat · 2 months ago
Twittelator Pro allows you to do that!
  • Patrick Kempf · 2 months ago
    What about "Push Notification"?
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
You can get it for specific users, but it isn't done app-wide. You can still use services like Boxcar if you want a notification for every single tweet, but Tweetie 2 lets you control it on a per user basis.
  • Ryan Scott · 2 months ago
What about for @replies to me? That still out as well? I'm using Boxcar now.
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
At least in the current version, yes. Now that could change before final release, but as of now -- yes, you will still need Boxcar if you want @reply notifications from all users.
  • Jimmy Blocksom · 2 months ago
I have friends on Twitter who are upset that they have to pay for it again, but I mean it's only $3 which is completely worth it in my opinion. I've gotten my $3 out of Tweetie and I'm glad to pay to support additional versions in the future :)
  • Matthew Lowery · 2 months ago
I know right? I mean, like $3 is going to bankrupt you!
  • Jimmy Blocksom · 2 months ago
Yeah, I think people have just gotten used to always getting updates for free, I can see where they're coming from, but Tweetie is such a well done app (by one person, no less) that I have no problem supporting them.
  • Nat · 2 months ago
$3 isn't a big deal, it's just a pain in the butt considering I only bought it two days ago. Would have been nice to know I should wait for a few more days.
  • Guest · 2 months ago
tweetie 2.0 is a free upgrade to people who have already purchased tweetie.
  • wumfi · 2 months ago
No it isn't. Tweetie 2.0 is a new product, and rightly so it's being charged for. Think of it as an entirely new app!
  • gadgets · 2 months ago
It's certainly worth $3, but all the same it would be nice if current owners got some kind of discount, if only as a thank you for earlier adopters. It feels odd that an upgrade for any software will be full price. Making it $2 for the first week would be smart. Advertise it as 33% off for limited time to accommodate current users or just as a promotion.

My current wishlist for Tweetie 2.0 is builtin-email and landscape browser (basically the OS 3.0 stuff) plus groups. Sounds like the former is coming but not the latter. Given that groups would be a core part of the app design and that Tweetie 2.0 is a complete rewrite, this is very disappointing. I still may buy it though.

IMHO the core fundamentals to the ideal Twitter app (before all the bells and whistles are thrown in) is multiple accounts, groups, and multiple groups per column. That is, multiple columns with full control over what gets shown in each column. This holds true for both desktop and iPhone clients because with the desktop app you want at most 4 or 5 columns shown at a glance and with the iPhone app the less columns to swipe between the better. Therefore the ability to combine columns is practical. Add sync to cloud and you have the core feature set. Fingers crossed for Tweetie 3.0 ;)
  • Matthew Lowery · 2 months ago
    FIRST
    And I'l be getting both!
  • Simone · 2 months ago
Sounds cool, but still no push notification service, which was something I was wholeheartedly hoping for.
  • zenoc · 2 months ago
No video upload? (to twitvid.com or other similar services)?
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
No, you can do video :)
  • zenoc · 2 months ago
    Ok great :-)
  • preshit · 2 months ago
    You can. yFrog and twitvid.
  • Darren Lehane · 2 months ago
    Does Tweetie have groups?

If not, I'm sticking with TweetDeck - can't be beat. Groups, remote syncing with the Desktop client for groups, people, etc.

    Also it's free.
  • Jimmy Blocksom · 2 months ago
OMG $3!!! Skip coffee for ONE day and you'll be able to pay for it =P
  • Ramon · 2 months ago
Wow you only drink 1 coffee a day? I'm impressed.
  • Raymond · 2 months ago
Actually, if I had to skip coffee for one day I would not buy it. But 3$ is affordable nonetheless.
  • gadgets · 2 months ago
Groups and sync-to-cloud are great, but being free doesn't affect my app choice. Given the amount I use Twitter on iPhone $3 doesnt factor into my decision whatsoever. I do like the URL shortener being on the tweet editor in TweetDeck though - I hope Tweetie gets that too. I really wish Tweetie gets groups soon. The pace of innovation at Twitter suggests a long long time before groups is a native feature so I hope Tweetie doesn't hang around for that and just takes the initiative like other clients.
  • Floris · 2 months ago
well, looks like an instant purchase for me.
  • Anees Younis · 2 months ago
The user interface looks really classy and very user friendliness orientated. Great job and can't wait to get my hands on Tweetie 2.0!
  • Uğur Vigo Özyılmazel · 2 months ago
woow! looks kool! will pay $2.99 again with love (: also, i wonder, why "mac" version doesn't integrated with iSight camera ( post images like iphone app ) ?
  • PJ Edwards · 2 months ago
That sucks that it is a whole new app and not an update. Anyway, can't wait for it though!
  • Chris Luckhardt · 2 months ago
I much prefer Twitbird Pro. I switched to it about a month ago. It has a great interface and I can post 280 character DMs from it into a single update.
  • wumfi · 2 months ago
You can post pretty much unlimited length DMs from http://dabr.co.uk :-)
  • Jean MacDonald · 2 months ago
There is so much great stuff to come in Tweetie 2, you might not have noticed: We TextExpander users have cause for celebration: Tweetie 2 for the iPhone includes TextExpander touch integration. And TextExpander touch is only $1.99 for 48 hours (to celebrate the release of another TextExpander-integrated app, WriteRoom).
  • Dillon Smith · 2 months ago
    I smell spam.
  • Jean MacDonald · 2 months ago
Nope, not spam. Just another excited Tweetie user who is also a TextExpander user. I try to be completely transparent, as one of the SmileOnMyMac team, but Disqus didn't use my full name or my website link. If I had known that was going to happen, I would have signed the comment: "Hi, it's Jean from SmileOnMyMac."
  • I hate Spammers · 2 months ago
It won't become "not spam" just because you say it isn't. This is a post about Tweetie and you post a comment where you talk about your own product without any context to the original post. That is called spam.
  • andrewhyde · 2 months ago
I love tweetie, can't wait for any new features. The perfect mix of light vs. useful.
  • Zahid Lilani · 2 months ago
I use TwitBird Pro and love it. We all get lost in the free world that we don't realize that there is a paid application out there that is way ahead of everyone else.

Not a big fan of TweetDeck on iPhone, I think it is decent only on the desktop.
  • Erik K Veland · 2 months ago
Per user? Surely what push is most useful for is @replies. This is in right?
  • HerTech · 2 months ago
Both Tweetie apps are THE BOMB! I ❤ them BOTH & can't wait for the release of v.2.0! I guess it's obvious to see which Twitter client I use hunh?!
  • gqmike · 2 months ago
So let me get this straight... you (atebits - Loren Brichter) release an "upgrade" to a Twitter client app (Tweetie), that you haven't bothered to upgrade the app for at least a year, then decide you might outta make some improvements to align with the Mac Tweetie version, call it Tweetie 2.0 and then release it as a new app that current & loyal Tweetie users are going to have to pay to download & upgrade? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Have the decency to call it a different app name like Tweetie Platinum, Tweetie Mac or Tweetie Pro, or anything that construes it to be a completely different app instead of an upgrade to Tweetie. Because it just makes all of us Tweetie users look foolish for waiting around for an upgrade to come to include the things that are in 2.0, and then apparently it's too overwhelmingly improved it has to be released as a new app and billed to us for more profit in Loren Bricther's pockets. No thank you. I'm going to be downloading EchoFon or Twitterific.
  • wumfi · 2 months ago
"Have the decency to call it a different app name like Tweetie Platinum, Tweetie Mac or Tweetie Pro" - he did, he called it Tweetie 2.0. It is a new app - totally! Read the blog before posting a derogatory comment. Is $3 going to kill you? Jeez.
  • rojocrandall · 2 months ago
I'm with you gqmike. The lemmings have their points - $3 isn't much - but if this is an indication of how all updates to this app will be handled, I do not want to support a precedent of paying full price every time an update is released.
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
I think you can look at how Tweetie updates were handled and see that there isn't a precedent for charging for every update. Different styles, different URL shortners, instapaper support, bookmarkletting and other stuff was all added to the original Tweetie (which came out in late November of 2008 so it has hardly been over a year since an update). Oh! Landscape (albeit limited) mode was added to Tweetie for iPhone over time too.

Tweetie 2.0 is a fundamentally new app -- like the next version of iLife or Office or Adobe CS. Yes, the key features are the same, but so much new stuff has been added and the app was rewritten to be faster, take advantage of the new OS 3.0 stuff, etc.

I feel pretty confident that the same updates and tweaks and options that we got over time with the original Tweetie will also come over the lifetime of Tweetie 2.

Ultimately it's up to each person if they want to buy the new app. I feel it is enough of an upgrade and adds enough new stuff to be worth the $3.
  • rojocrandall · 2 months ago
Good points - I understand what you are saying.
However, if I would have known in advance that Tweetie 1.0+ had planned obsolescence, that it would not have future support, that my purchase price would have no value of loyalty for the ongoing use of the product to the author, I would not have made the purchase.
  • Chris · 2 months ago
"I feel pretty confident that the same updates and tweaks and options that we got over time with the original Tweetie will also come over the lifetime of Tweetie 2."

Yeah and how much more are they gonna cost us.
  • Chris · 2 months ago
I whole heartedly agree with gqmike and wumfi!! Tweetie is now only catchin up to the other twitter apps out there (I have 5). Don't ask, I just like to see what performs better). Twittelator pro is the best example: After purchasing it when 3.0 came out, another 2 releases where put into the app store and they were free to owners. People have been waiting a long time for tweetie to bring out an upgrade, groups etc and $2.99 or not, it's just going to make more people crack their .ipa's. Just you wait and see...Am disappointed in Loren Brichter!!
  • Gordon Kelly · 2 months ago
Gets its butt kicked by EchoFon which has push @replies and direct messages and read/unread message sync with its desktop client, plus age old favour: autoscrolling to the first unread new message when updating tweets.

    Tweetie is horribly overrated IMHO
  • ginote · 2 months ago
That is really cool, like the apps, check out some more twitter secrets http://bit.ly/4vZNN
  • petercui · 2 months ago
Thanks for all the pics and one more question that What about the API Proxy support?
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
I'm not sure of the specifics of how that works (but I can did out) but it does indeed support API proxy stuff.
  • rajagiri4 · 2 months ago
whether it is used only for specific user or for all?

  • Mario · 2 months ago
People, Atebits has introduced several free updates since Tweetie 1.0 (Nov 2008) hence the current 1.3.2 version number. He's included not only bug fixes, but also included new features over it's current lifespan. I think if he charge $20 for the iPhone version, then maybe free whole point updates for life, but $2.99, c'mon.
  • externe festplatten · 2 months ago
Great! Def excited for tweetie2-2come. But.....I know this is small, but it bugs me so much. I really wish tweetie had a better icon. Two speech bubbles makes it look like tweetie is still in beta - which the underlying program clearly is not. Please let tweetie2 have a better icon!
  • elrolio · 2 months ago
both iphone and mac versions NEEED to have autofill if you start typing the "@". Thats what I'm hoping for.

And favs Sync, but im sure that is covered along with the other cool stuff you guys highlighted
  • elrolio · 2 months ago
"The compose screen design has been completely overhauled, with a @people picker, recent hashtags, multiple attachments manager, and a “peek” gesture when replying to a tweet."

    ah, there we go.
  • Brooman · 2 months ago
If you can upload more than 1 photo at a time they should definitely integrate the Twicli API (http://twicli.com/api) that supports Sets of photos

Check out this cool photo tagging software called Fotobounce! It can help you sort your images using face recognition! It can also download & tag your photos from facebook & flickr! You can get it for free at: www.Fotohotline.com

We've been long time fans of Twitteriffic but it seems clear we are going to have to give Tweetie a whirl! Thanks for your post.
  • stephen · 2 months ago
Am I supposed to be getting a free update? because it's not showing up yet, kinda worried :/
  • emoqix · 1 month ago
    thinking of getting tweetie 2.
    sounds exciting.
  • mikey · 1 month ago
I will say, I already miss the chat bubbles. I haven't tested it extensively, but the new features seem pretty cool.

But sadly, and I can't believe that this is (almost) a deal breaker for me, but... I want my chat bubbles back. Makes it so so SOOOOO much easier to read. For me, anyway.
  • mikey · 1 month ago
Should have specified - I miss the chat bubbles from the original Tweetie. Tweetie was the first Twitter client I tried, and I never saw a reason to change.
