I agree, All you need to do now is use the phone and rip-it beyond technicality aspects. I love it when BestBuy does that, (actually I hate them before) but now its quite the opposite

First sentence in 2nd paragraph should say: "If you want to go ahead AND pre-order your phone..." :-)

    I'm on it! Thank mashable!

I just bought an HTC Hero (Sprint) but I am tempted...still within the magical 30 day return window
  • ProfessionalGun · 1 month ago
How's your experience been with the Hero? Like you, I'm within my 30 day window, and I'm RETURNING IT FOR THE DROID! ! . . . Too slow. . . and far too short on the battery life!
  • poppablog · 1 month ago
Battery life is pretty shoddy, hoping an OS update will fix that.
Mine isn't very slow either. I use a task killer application to keep
tabs on what is running and close things regularly.

Just got back from Best Buy and pre-ordered my Droid. WOOT
  • Name · 1 month ago
you just paid 100 too much hahaha
  • David · 1 month ago
I have to pay full retail so how did I pay too much by buying at Best Buy?
  • FishHooker · 1 month ago
What was the full retail price you paid
  • Name · 1 month ago
best buys lieing i work for verizon the droid will be 199 out the door 99 after mir so ur actully paying more f**kin idiots i hate when authorized retailers lie
  • gary · 1 month ago
Are you sure? All the verizon websites say it will be $199 after the 100 rebate. Now the Droid Eris will be $99 after the rebate but not the Motorola Droid if every site including Verizon's I've read in the past 2 days are right. Price of the phone without a new contract is $599 based on the Verizon Twitter feed.
  • Dave2.1 · 1 month ago
i was with alltel but with verizon thru the merger and 1 vzw rep said my upgrade time isn't till 1-12-10. Can i upgrade to a smartphone plan earlier without having to pay full retail price for a new phone?
  • dfrederick · 1 month ago
You should be able to upgrade to a new smartphone but electing to renew your current contract to a new 2 year contract...and you should get the promotional 2 yr contract price. You may also be able to get an additional $100 new every 2 discount if you wait til Dec 12th and ask the vzw store to give you the upgrade early...sometimes they will within 30 days of your anniversary date. You should ask if you qualify for VIP status, if so here are the benefits:
Up to $50 off a new phone or PDA every year
    25% off wireless accessories
Courtesy text message alert when you're on track to exceed your plan allowance and may benefit from a different calling plan
    Overage protection
    Free Phone Book transfer
Waived fees on select transactions - new line activation, phone upgrades, mobile number change or device restocking

Bottom line...call a vzw rep and they'll tell you if you can upgrade and get the new contract price and whether or not you qualify for the NE2 discount.
  • andrew graham · 1 month ago
I'll buy it regardless, but I'm wondering if customers extending existing contracts for two years get the rebate too. I've remained a Verizon customer specifically to get this thing.
  • corey · 1 month ago
well that's a shame. all the hype made me think it was actually going to be 'way' better than the iPhone. i'm not nearly as impressed as i hoped i'd be. guess i'm sticking with apple... yet again.
  • no · 1 month ago
you're not nearly as impressed by the rave reviews as you hoped to be? or is it the flat keyboard that's bothering you? "sticking with apple" = being stuck by apple
  • franwhite · 1 month ago
I called Best Buy to see about pre-order. My account is not eligible for an upgrade till next year. First the girl at Best Buy didn't know what I was talking about, yeah Kansas City Missouri is a little behind. Then she talked to her Mgr. to find out what retail would be since I can't get an upgrade... are you ready? $699.00.... It's not worth that. iNot.
  • Austin · 1 month ago
actually, the price without contract is $559 accroding to the droiddoes twitter.
  • Austin · 1 month ago
    * $559.99
  • Steve Runner · 1 month ago
Sorry, but they either lied to you or didn't understand the whole concept: the $699 price is for a non-contract phone. If you are a Verizon customer already (as I am), even if your New Every Two is not near...you will pay only $199 for this phone.

For example, my NE2 is up in March, but I'm going to Best Buy today, and will spend $199 for the phone, extending my current 2 year contract.
  • franwhite · 1 month ago
Ok my NE@ isn't up till 11-5-10 and I was under the impression that they wouldn't extend your contract that far out.... please tell me when you get back from Best Buy and if you got it.
    Thanks
  • J Rod · 1 month ago
Where did you get that idea? If your "new every 2" isn't up, you have to pay full price for the phone. Trust me, I have tried multiple times. Come one Steve. Dont try to give advice on things you know nothing about.
  • steverunner · 1 month ago
ok, well then explain this: just got back from Best Buy where I pre-ordered my phone. They noted that I wasn't eligible for my upgrade until 3/31/10 (5 months) and said I had to pay an early upgrade fee of $20. I spoke with the manager and he said he'll have my phone waiting for me at the desk at 10AM on Friday 9/6.

Not sure about my advice here; I can only tell you what I paid.
  • Maneka P · 1 month ago
I destroyed my LG Chocolate by dropping it in my beer and went to Verizon to get the LG Dare and they should just extend your 2 year agreement from your date of purchase.
  • SpEnCeR · 1 month ago
hey to answer your question YES if your a VIP meaning you spend alot fo money with verizon you can update your phone with in a year from the end of your contract but if he waited till march you can as a VIP get your phone then and get 100 dollars off your new purchase. i called verizon this morning they told me i could update but will lose the 100 credit to a new phone my contract is also up in march not only that get this if your a VIP you can charge up to 250 dollars to your bill and pay when your monthly bill is due also if you order online it will be a instant rebate the day of but he wouldnt say yeah or nah to the droid does email sign up If you do they might do a pre order if your already a verizon customer
  • Mike O. · 1 month ago
I dont know where you get the idea that you can just get a new phone whenever you want. Unless your new every 2 is up, you have to pay full price for the phone (559.99). Sometimes they will let you upgrade a few months early, but it depeneds who you talk to.
  • steverunner · 1 month ago
I got the idea from the service rep that I spoke to at Verizon, and then I paid the $199.00 plus $20 early (annual) upgrade fee. That's where I got the idea; but then again maybe I dreamed it :)

Nope, just checked...I didn't dream it (but I am picking up my new Droid next Friday morning)
  • ckidwell · 1 month ago
Verizon also has an annual upgrade, where every year you can upgrade your phone for the promotional sale price and start over on your 2 year agreement. Go to the VZW website and search for annual upgrade, you will see there. I'm paying $155 to terminate my current contract I've had for 5 months and starting a whole new one, which is still way cheaper then the full retail price of the phone, so there are a few ways around it.
  • @johnblackk · 1 month ago
It looks very cool. I am an iPhone user but would like to see one of these phones in action before I figure I need to make a jump.
  • Pixelrage · 1 month ago
I'm wondering how much this is going to cost per month, I'm hoping it's not over $100/mo

EDIT: "Verizon’s answer to the iPhone, the Motorla (read:Morotola) Droid"

I'm interested in the Droid. But for now i'll stick with my iDont (read: iPhone), i love it :]

I'll be ditching my Hero for the Droid as soon as possible. It's possible that my Hero is just defective, but I cannot work with battery life this bad and a processor this pokey. I'm hoping for a BIG improvement with Droid. Plus - I'm one who really does appreciate having a physical keyboard option.

so am i but i think that its worth saving for. i have the samsung alias and my family has been with verizon for 7 years. This is the best phone i have seen period from them. the problem is with a family plan that its so much for a data add on, i just cant see my parents ever agreeing to that
  • Henry · 1 month ago
    wow
    that is good news
i cant wait to give it a try
    Motorola Droid looks amazing
  • VP · 1 month ago
Also, the first sentence is missing a comma after "the Motorola Droid." It should read: "Verizon’s answer to the iPhone, the Motorola Droid, hits Verizon stores next Friday, for $199 after a $100 mail-in-rebate."
  • Maneka P · 1 month ago
I think what they do when you buy a new phone you can either buy it retail or extend your 2 year contract from your date of purchase. I'm not sure what happens with your "New Every Two" date since I had a friend that worked for Verizon bump up that date for me.
  • Katrina · 1 month ago
I'd love to get one - sadly my contract with verizons not up - so there is no way I'm paying full price for it.

I am looking like a phone like this for AT&T. Tried the iphone but hated that it only had an onscreen keyboard - this looks like the perfect alternative, but its only verizon? I currently use the AT&T Tilt which I like a lot, but would love this one!
  • iAmFreeFromATT · 1 month ago
I've been hostage to AT&T's terrible network for almost a year now. I travel all over the USA and have dropped calls everywhere on my iPhone. I will gladly pay to break my contract and get back to Verizon where there is actually signal. I love the iPhone, but it isn't heavy enough to be a paperweight and that's all it is good for on AT&T. BTW honestly I only use about 5 apps anyway. Mail, browser, text, mp3, and maps/GPS.

How does the basic phone functions work? You know; reception, sound, hardware durability, look of photos, with zoom, wi-fi, etc. A little concern due to it being a Motorola. Use to use them all the time but last one traded in for a LG because of the quality concerns. Know anywhere that has truelly tested the unit? I hope it is able to do as advertised because I don't like Microsoft and , you know, Apple...enough said!!
  • DFrederick · 1 month ago
Anyone who is currently a VZW customer already and is eligible for the new every two discount of $100 WILL NOT get that $100 discount if you get the phone pre-order or otherwise through Best Buy! I checked with two Best Buy stores and they can only offer the instant $100 rebate but they say they can not "process" the NE2 $100 discount. They actually had a long conversation with VZW customer services to explain to them that they can't (or won't) process the NE2 rebate and to tell VZW to stop telling their customers they can. I will order the Droid, but I won't give up my $100 NE2 rebate just to pre-order it from BB. Besides, according to VZW customer service I'll be able to order it on the VZW website at midnight on the 6th and get the $100 rebate instantly as well as my NE2 $100 rebate too...which translates to the Droid for $99 bucks for me!!! So what if it means I may not have it in my hands until for a couple of days...I'll put that savings towards the cool accessories like the multimedia docking station and the car docking station!
